01 - A Threat Bigger Than A Boulder
The roar of the waterfall drowned the mountain range. No one came here expecting to be heard.Mist clung to the air like ghostly smoke, drifting across the stones and bones at the riverbank. Near the edge of the torrent, a long black-haired boy stood barefoot on cold rock, his feet planted wide, his shoulders steady. His fist struck the boulder.Thud.The stone barely trembled. His knuckles were split, skin raw and swollen from repeated practice. He breathed out slowly and struck again.Thud.This boulder had been here longer than he had. He knew every crack on its surface. For many months, he had returned to it every other day, even when his hands bled, even when his clan members laughed at him openly.A shadow passed over the ground.“Mm?” The boy paused and looked up.High above the waterfall, something vast drifted across the sky. It looked like a wandering cloud at first sight. Then wings beat once, scattering the mist.It was actually a gargantuan swan gliding through invisible
02 - Finding Freedom
The boy sprinted as fast as his bare feet could take him.The mountainous crocodile smashed through trees headfirst, never slowing, its glittering yellow eyes fixed on the boy.Just as despair tightened around his chest, a blur cut through the mist.Steel screamed.A figure descended from above and drove a sword straight into the crown of the crocodile’s skull. The impact shattered the air.A violent shockwave exploded outward, throwing the boy off his feet and slamming him into the ground. His vision spun as stones and dirt rained down. The crocodile lurched sideways, its massive body rolling as the girl leapt away, her bare feet skidding across rock.“My attack had no effect on it?” the blue-haired girl gritted her teeth. “Just how tough is this thing?”The beast rose.Unhurt.The boy shouted hoarsely. “That’s the King Croc! Only a master level fighter can hope to wrestle with it!”The blue-haired girl’s expression twisted. Shock flickered in her eyes, then fury hardened her gaze.“
03 - A Song Without A Sword
If you believe in your fists, you shall find freedom here.“Who wrote these words on this boulder?” the boy’s voice barely stirred the damp air. He stood before the big stone slab embedded at the heart of the chamber. Time had gnawed at its edges, smoothing the corners, yet the words carved into it remained sharp, as though they refused to fade.“Fists…” he murmured. “Not weapons… Not weapon techniques…”Something in his chest stirred.Beyond the slab, the walls stretched outward, carved from pitch-black stone. The surface wasn’t smooth. It was scarred with fist marks.Hundreds, no, thousands of them. Some shallow. Some deep. Some so violent they seemed to have crushed the stone inward rather than struck it. It was like watching a painting come to life. The boy’s heartbeat quickened.“The Seven-Stellar Mountains used to belong to the Fist Clan,” he muttered, piecing together half-forgotten stories. “Before weapons ruled everything.”“Does that mean these words were written by one of
04 - A Way Out?
After Raha somewhat recovered from the pain, Gunnar took her to the remaining three rooms in the chamber.Gunnar was no longer holding her hand. For some reason, she felt like cutting his hand off for touching her, but she controlled her emotions and said, “Please don’t grab my hand without my permission.”Gunnar was a bit bewildered by her response. “O-Okay.”He wondered how she’d feel if he told her that he had to put his mouth in her mouth many times to breathe air into her.Not wanting to unnecessarily upset her, he didn’t bring that up.“And why are you rushing into these rooms? There could be traps, so we should be more careful,” she warned as they stopped by the second room.“If I could break these doors, I wouldn’t ask for your help,” he replied.Sighing, Raha tried to pour aura into her sword, but then frowned and bit on her lower lip. “Strange… my aura feels heavy..” She momentarily dropped the sword and pressed two fingers at her temple. She could feel a vein throbbing hard
05 - The First Punch Toward Freedom
“What? You don’t want to go with me?” Raha’s face was stricken by confusion. “Are you stupid? There’ll likely be monsters outside. You think you can fight them and make it back home by yourself?”Gunnar’s mouth turned down. “The people at my home won’t miss me.”“Huh?” She stared at him, baffled. “What are you saying? Don’t you have parents and siblings and friends?”“They won’t miss me,” he added. “I want to stay here and become stronger.”“There are no martial art manuals here,” she said. “And you don’t have an instructor, either. How are you going to get stronger, huh?”“I don’t know,” Gunnar said, looking like a stubborn child. “But I think I’m feeling hotter ever since I ate the bananas.”Raha’s eyes widened. “That means… the immortium is affecting you now! The fruits are not just a blessing to you! They’re also a curse! You shouldn’t stay here for long, or your body will break.”“My body is already broken,” Gunnar said. “You should go. I’ve decided to stay here since there’s foo
06 - The Sound of Becoming
THUD!THUD~!Over two days passed, and Gunnar was now able to punch the wall twice in a row. The sound of his fists moving through the air also slightly increased. He was also able to feel the little progress, and this motivated him to keep trying. As hours passed and added into days, there was no way to tell how much time was passing in this chamber, but Gunnar wasn’t worried about time at all.He was fully focused on striking the fist imprints on the walls and nothing else. There were times when days would pass without him feeling any improvement, and then he would feel slight improvement in the noise made by his fists.Gunnar’s routine didn’t stay the same every day. He did what he pleased and what he felt his body required. After a long, tiring workout, he would go for a swim in the big pool.He didn’t explore deep in the pool as it seemed to be going deeper into the earth. But about fifty feet deep, he found mushrooms growing on the walls, and he plucked them hard.To his pleasan
07 - 16000 Punches Later
A few weeks later.POW! POW! POW!Gunnar was moving all around the chamber. He was jumping high and was hitting the fist imprints at all angles without fail. His fists were covered with aura whenever he wanted, and the more he struck the wall, the stronger the crystal lights were flickering. In the past, only one crystal flickered its light with every punch, but his punches now made multiple lights flicker at a time. And the sounds his fists made were matching the noise the water jet made.Ripples formed in the pool even though he was punching the walls dozens of feet away. With every passing day, his strength, power, and skill was significantly improving. He was eating more and putting in more effort than ever before. He was shouting at the top of his lungs as he was giving it his all with every punch. It was extremely draining, but his stamina was now incomparable to when he just started. He could keep going for nearly an hour without stopping.By the time he finished, all the light
08 - Who In The Seven Mountains Was That?
The staircase led to a labyrinth of tunnels through which Gunnar had to walk around for hours. He had long lost his sense of direction and was aimlessly roaming around.“How long should I walk like this? Why am I not finding anything? Something. Just anything… would be fine.”As he was thinking, he heard a faint noise. He looked ahead and saw a human-sized spider crawling on the ceiling. It suddenly sprang at him, making him move out of the way. The spider crashed on the floor but then got back up and attacked him.Gunnar ran away in fright because his mindset against the monsters was still as how it was in the past. The spider sprang forth and caught him with its legs from behind. With the dagger, Gunnar reflexively stabbed its face over his shoulder, making it scream. It let go of him momentarily.“Get away from me, you damn spider!” Gunnar turned around and punched it with his left fist. The spider’s head and body blasted to bits and pieces, and its limbs flew in different directio
09 - Clan In Crisis
Gunnar was a member of the Fist Clan. The Fist Clan’s territory used to be vast in the past, but with every year, they kept losing more and more of their land to the other clans.Even recently, an entire street was taken away overnight by the neighboring Devil Knife clan, which was known for being the home of bandits.Losing this street was a big deal because the Fist Clan had been keeping 11 streets for nearly a decade, and now, losing a commercial street was a big blow to them. This naturally caused a commotion in the clan of nearly 3200 people. At the clanhead’s meeting hall, the four elders were having a heated discussion with the patriarch.“The Devil Knife Clan bastards are acting up like jackals in heat!” the fourth elder hissed.“They got the backing of the Woodcutter Clan,” the third elder growled, “which is why they dared to snatch the Potter street!”“Losing Potter Street is not just some border lost,” the second elder seriously insisted. “Without that street, we’ll lose a
10 - The Dead Man Returns
“EH? He’s Brother Gunnar?! Are you serious, Old Blob?” The kids behind the old guard Hector were shocked as well.Hector was known for his laziness, and he looked like a blob while sitting lazily in the chair post, which brought him the nickname Old Blob.“Brother Gunnar, are you really that good-for-nothing Gunnar?” the kids asked Gunnar to his face. “The useless third son of the patriarch? The one who’s called the Fragile Fist?”“Heavens forbid! You shouldn’t speak like that,” Hector pulled the ears of the kids. “Don’t forget that you’re talking to the third young master!”“Aiyee! But the third young master has been announced to be dead, right?” the kids shouted.“But he’s standing right before you now,” Hector hissed at them. “Are your eyes only there for decoration?”“It’s okay,” Gunnar softly told Hector. “Let go of them.”“Hmph,” Hector snorted and then let go of their big-little ears.“I know I have been gone for a long time, but they really declared me dead?” Gunnar felt quite
