The city looked like it had not been alive for years.

But it was just few hours.

Ray and Zoe moved along the left side of Crescent Street, tight to the buildings, stepping over broken glass and around two bodies that Ray did not look at long enough to recognize.

Four vehicles had halted in the middle of the road at angles that suggested the drivers had simply stopped caring about lanes. One was still speeding with door open, radio playing something that had no business existing in this street

The tunnel ended with a rusted iron grate.Ray hit it twice with his shoulder and it gave way and fell outward and cold air came in.This was real air and not the recycled underground air they had been breathing for the past hour.Everyone moved toward it immediately the way people move toward anything that feels like outside after being underground too long.Ray came out first and stood up straight and looked around. It was a Forest. This was not a city-edge scrubland, but real forest with tall dense trees the kind that had been growing for decades without anyone clearing it. The ground underneath was soft with old leaves and the darkness here was different from tunnel darkness. It had depth and distance to it rather than the flat, closed dark of concrete walls. He turned back and helped Zoe through the opening. She was on her feet but not fully , Charlie had one of her arms and Ray took the other and they got her upright and she stood and breathed the outside air and some of the

  • CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT - Soul Feeder

Priya was actually wrong. It wasn't waiting for Ray to wake up.It was waiting for Ray to die.The difference became clear in the next four seconds. The thing in the tunnel entrance stood completely still for three of those seconds and on the fourth second something happened to its body that had no clean explanation.SMOOOOOCH!!!the skin along its arms and torso split open in clean lines, not like wounds but like seams, and from each seam a dark cord emerged. It was thin at first, then it became thicker and moving with the slow deliberate purpose of something that had done this before.TentaclesThey were six of them and black, the same colour as the veins covering its body, moving outward through the air of the tunnel toward the group in the alcove."Move," Ken said and stood up.But he wasn't fast enough.Three tentacles reached the group before anyone could fully stand. One wrapped around Ken's forearm and he made a sound Ray would never have associated with Ken and dropped the

  • CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN - Danger Ahead

Ray went sideways and Ken caught him before his head hit the concrete."Ray." Ken slapped his face twice, not hard, trying to bring him back. "Stay with me. Ray."Nothing came.Ray's eyes were closed and his nose was still bleeding and his body had the specific dead weight of someone fully unconscious rather than just down.Charlie was still holding Zoe. Her convulsions had slowed but her eyes were still wrong, that grey-white colour that was not her eyes. The black fluid had dried at the corner of her mouth and she was breathing in short irregular bursts.Priya was trying to work on two people at the same time and her hands were moving fast between them. She was checking Ray's pulse, then Zoe's, and then back to her compound components on the flat case."His pulse is there," Priya said. "It's weak but there, it think his body shut itself down. It's protecting itself." She looked at the compound. "We have Four more minutes and I have something for Zoe but Ray I cannot help right no

  • CHAPTER TWENTY SIX - The Tunnel

Ray went through the back door first. The kitchen was dark and Ada was on the floor exactly where Saul had left her, with her knees to her chest, and she was completely silent. Saul went straight to her and picked her up and she locked onto him without a sound."The cellar," Ken said from behind Ray. "The door is under the stairs."Ray moved back through the hallway past the living room without looking at Bello and found the door Ken was pointing at.It was a low, wooden door with a latch handle. He pulled it open and cold air came up from below and he took the torch from inventory and pointed it down. There were oncrete steps and a room below with small, shelving units along both walls. It stank of a space that hadn't been opened in months."Go," Ray said.Charlie went first with Eli, then Priya with her kit, then Saul carrying Ada, then Ken, then Zoe. Ray went last and he pulled the door shut above him and latched it from the underside using a bolt he found by torchlight.Above t

  • CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE - Alderton Close

Ray pushed the door open.Stairs were directly ahead and dark. The sound was still coming from above, the back and forth sound. He reached into inventory and pulled a torch and held it low and went up with Ken directly behind him and Charlie at the rear.At the first floor landing, there were three doors, all closed. The sound was coming from the middle one.Ray put his hand on the handle and pushed it open fast and stepped in with the torch up.They saw wo men. They were both against the far wall, both their hands raised immediately, both were faces of living people who had been terrified for long enough that terror had become their resting expression. One of them was large, broad shouldered, and somewhere in his forties, a jagged piece of metal rod pierced in his left side just below the ribs.It was not deep enough to have hit anything vital or he would already be dead but deep enough that the skin around it was dark and swollen. He was breathing in the careful shallow pattern

  • CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR - Numbers

The street between the pharmacy and Whitefield was not empty.Ray saw the zombies before the others did. Two people pressed into a recessed doorway forty feet ahead on the right, they were not infected or armed, they were just trying to no to be seen. A heavyset man in his mid fifties with a hardware store jacket and a younger woman, mid-twenties, dark hair, backpack still on, watching Ray's group approach with the specific look of people deciding in real time whether to run or stay.Ray held up one hand to stop his group and called out at normal volume. "We're not infected. Don't run."The man looked at the armed zombies flanking Ray and made a sound. "Those things behind you say otherwise.""They're not mine," Ray said. "Not permanently. Are you hurt."The woman stepped forward half a step before the man could answer. "No. We've been in that doorway for two hours." Her accent was slightly Indian and her voice was steady despite two hours in a doorway in the middle of an armed z
