CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE “No way! That’s suicidal! I am sure he is not going to even give me the chance to explain before drawing his sword.” Marcus dissuaded himself from harboring the thoughts that crept into his mind, but each time he went away from it, something else dragged him back to it as though it was the last resort he had. “This isn’t going to work.” He grunted in a little frustration while he thought about the idea that lingered in his mind. He looked around for a while, and when it seemed like no one was watching him, he sneaked through one of the alleys close to him and moved toward the back of the diner. He sighted a piece of cloth on the floor, and after he had taken a close look at it, he quickly grabbed it, and wrapped it around his head, covering some part of his face. “This is the worst idea I have ever had…” He whispered as the only thing leading him to continue with his crazy idea was the little courage he had which was the only thing that refused to fail him at t

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO The soldiers started to move toward Marcus with their eyes glaring at him while they sought for means to free their General from his tight grip. Marcus took three steps backward, and then he looked around just to realize that the soldiers had encircled him. “I think you should tell your soldiers to calm down.” Marcus urged the General, pushing the dagger deeper into his skin in such a way that blood began to drop from the little cut he made. “Lower your weapons! Lower your weapons!” Lord Stephan gestured to the soldiers who obliged him after a few seconds of hesitation. They still stood where they were, waiting for the right opportunity to deal with the young man who was holding onto their superior. “What do you want? Do you want to poison the King’s son just like you poisoned him?” “I don’t know what you are talking about! I had no hand in whatever happened to the King!” “Lies! That’s a big lie! You poisoned the King, and you have been declared wanted!” Lord

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE “I don’t know how else I am supposed to convince you that I am telling the truth, General. Think about it…I was given a room far away from the Royal Chambers which I am sure is heavily guarded by your men who must have been careless to allow someone to go into the King’s Chambers. There was no way I would have gone back instantly to the Royal Chambers without being seen. I don’t even know where the King’s Chambers is located!” Gradually, Lord Stephan began to see sense in what Marcus was saying even though he was still visibly angry about their first encounter and desperately wanted to regain his ego. “I know that somewhere within you, you know that I am telling the truth. Angus cannot be trusted, he is working hand-in-hand with a dangerous group. They call themselves the Shadows of The Undead!” “Shadows of The Undead? What does that mean?” “I don’t know, General. That was what Angus said to me. They were after something very powerful that they thought I had

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR Lord Stephan ignored the words that Marcus spoke and touched the injury on his neck with both hands to see how deep it was. His hands were soiled with his blood, and he growled angrily, causing the soldiers to want to attack Marcus. “Stop!” He lifted his hands at once, and they remained still while Marcus sighed heavily in relief as he thought of defending himself against their attacks. The General looked at Marcus for a while, and then he cleared his throat, holding onto his resolve to give him the benefit of the doubt. “We still have a duel to finish, and I really hope that you have a very good plan on how to prove yourself.” “Very well then. I look forward to that.” Marcus’s response caused the General to look at him with a smirk even though he was glad that he accepted his challenge. “So tell me, what is your plan? How do you intend to prove that Angus did this?” Lord Stephan asked a few seconds later while Marcus remained silent, thinking of the right r

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE When he was certain that the soldiers were out of earshot, Marcus turned to look at the General who left him at once and continued walking toward the direction he had his eyes on. Marcus joined him almost immediately and after a few steps, they stood in front of each other with Titus holding onto his sword with his left hand just in case Marcus was still a threat. “I am sure you won't be needing that, especially now.” “Well, you never can tell. You might decide to be funny, and I wouldn’t hesitate to draw my sword.” Titus responded with a smirk, looking at Marcus who chuckled softly before he nodded with a smile on his face. “This better be good. Why did you take me away from my soldiers?” “We can’t trust anyone at this moment…” Marcus said with a whisper, and then he turned to look at some of the soldiers who had their eyes fixed on them. Titus joined him shortly after, and after a few seconds of staring, they returned their gazes to each other. “If the Kin

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX For the second time, Marcus thought about the words he heard from the General and realizing that it was the only way that he was going to be able to get into the palace without being attacked, he grunted at the fact that he was left with no choice than to agree with what he said. He grunted again, and then he stole a glance at some of the soldiers who refused to leave their positions and were patiently waiting to get a command from their General. “I hate that I am even thinking about this, General. This is really dangerous, and I don’t want anything to go wrong.” “Maybe that’s the price you have to pay for your freedom. You have no other choice, Marcus.” Titus said calmly, looming at Marcus whose countenance was enough to tell that he was greatly troubled and unable to make a decision. Marcus let go of some of the air he had taken into his lungs, and then he discarded his deep concern so that he could be able to freely agree to what the General suggested. “Ver

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN “No, not at all! We can continue.” Marcus responded to Titus who continued to look at him even when the soldiers he had beckoned arrived in front of him and bowed slightly. “Bind him! We have a prisoner to take to the Royal Prisons!” Titus pointed to Marcus, and even though the soldiers had so much doubt about his words, they decided to do just as he had instructed. One of the soldiers pulled out a strong rope from underneath his single, and then he exchanged glances with his companion before they started to walk toward Marcus. To their astonishment, Marcus Willingly extended his hands toward them while he waited for them to bind his hands. While still struggling to deal with the fact that Marcus was not moved by what they were doing, neither was he interested in what they were doing as he turned to look at Titus who had a scary smile on his face. When the soldiers were done binding Marcus, they turned to look at Titus who observed Marcus for a while just to

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT The moment the soldiers set their eyes on the council member, they stood still while they waited for him to approach. He sauntered toward them from the point where he stood, lifting the edge of his garment as he walked down to them without taking his eyes away from Marcus who was nervously standing with his hands bound together. “I hope I haven’t made a terrible mistake,” Marcus whispered to himself, and then he turned around in search of the General who was still nowhere to be found. At that point, he could only imagine what was going to happen to him if things didn’t go as planned, and his heartbeat increased again as though his heart was attempting to finish up a race. “Lord Clifford!” One of the soldiers said as they saluted the council member who stood in front of them with his hands clasped behind him. He observed the soldiers for a while, and when he was done with his observation, he turned to look at Marcus who struggled not to run away at the sight o

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE “I see…” Clifford returned his gaze to Marcus whom he stared at with a smirk on his face, while he thought about the numerous ideas that ran through his mind. “I don’t think keeping him in the Royal Prisons is a good idea. I am certain that he is very deadly, and could escape in a Twinkie of an eye. Don’t be deceived by his appearance, people like this have very powerful mana cores, and they will be able to take down ten soldiers with a single strike.” Clifford paused for a while without looking away from Marcus who knew he was telling the truth. At that time, Marcus’s nervousness grew at an intense speed, and he wasn’t sure of what to do. He looked at his hands which were tightly bound together, and then he realized that it was going to be very difficult to escape from the soldiers just in case he had walked into a trap. Looking around him, he counted the fifteen soldiers who were surrounding him, mapping out strategies on how to defend himself and also attack

CHAPTER THIRTY “Move!” Two of the soldiers behind Marcus pushed him toward the passage up the stairs while Lord Clifford watched him closely with both hands behind him, his countenance showing signs of intense contempt. Marcus grunted as the soldiers continued pushing him from behind, not minding the fact that he was going up the stairs with his hands bound together. “What is happening? Is that the way to the Royal Palace?” Lord Stephan appeared from a corner of the palace, glaring at the soldiers who halted instantly with their lips sealed, and their eyes stealing glances at Lord Clifford who was facing the gate of the palace. “I am certain that I wasn’t talking to animals! Where were you taking him to? Why isn’t he yet in the Royal Prison?” The General’s tone was resonant, but the soldiers were skeptical about giving him a response, as they were not sure of the best way to present the situation to him.The General and Lord Clifford were always at loggerheads with each other, dis
