Chapter 31
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE Lord Stephan ignored Lord Clifford whose countenance showed eagerness to find out what could be going on. He stared at Marcus for a while, and then he sighed softly.“I was told that he was the same young fellow who almost stripped you of your ego. I was told that he almost defeated you in a duel if the King didn't call it to a stop. So much for being the unworthy General of the Army.” Lord Clifford scoffed, looking at Titus who managed to get a grip on himself even though the words of the old man really got to him. At that time, Marcus was hoping that the words the General heard from the old man were not going to make him change his mind about the plan they heard. “Silly old man,” Marcus whispered only to his hearing, looking at Lord Clifford who saw his mouth move, but wasn’t sure of what he said. “General? Why do I have the feeling that you are going to try to harm this fellow because he won you in a duel even before he faces trial? Am I right, or wrong?” “I

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWOMarcus continued to pay keen attention while he waited patiently to hear what else the man was going to say. For a while, nothing was heard, and he felt that those were the words of a crazy fellow who was just trying to get his attention. He sighed softly and after he had looked at his bound hands for a while, he took a step backward and looked at the entrance to the prison, hoping that the General was going to show up really soon. “You are still there, aren’t you? You heard everything I said, didn’t you?” The strange man questioned him with a loud tone, but even though he returned to his previous position close to the iron bars to be able to hear all the things he was saying, he refused to give him any response. At that time, it had already occurred to Marcus that he couldn’t trust everyone, not even the General who had left him for a while only to return just when he was about to be thrown into the dungeon. “Have you sworn an oath of silence? Have you been for

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE “Hold on, there are guards everywhere.” Lord Stephan signaled to Marcus to stop while he peeped through a tiny hall inside the wall to see if the guards on the other side were still there. “You left me…” Marcus said after a while, looking at the General with an unpleasant expression that displayed his displeasure over his actions. “I am sorry, Marcus. I had to ensure that none of the other soldiers on patrol had seen you.” “But you should have said something before leaving. The Councilman almost made the guards throw me into the dungeon. I wonder what would have happened if you didn’t show up. Well, I would have fought for myself.” “I am certain of that. Now, can we focus on the reason why I brought you into this place?” Lord Stephan ignored the fact that he had made a mistake, and then he returned his gaze to look through the hole in the wall. “The guards are not moving. I have to go distract them while you move as fast as you can. I won’t be able to go wit

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR Marcus was certain that Lord Clifford couldn’t see him, but that didn’t stop the conflict that nestled in his mind from making him feel very nervous. He watched as the councilman approached with slow but steady steps, looking toward his direction with so much suspicion written all over his face. At that time, the soldiers who were moving with him had gotten close to the doors that led into the King’s Chambers, and they stood still, waiting for him to join them. Lord Clifford continued to approach, and when he got a few steps close to Marcus, he lifted his robe and gently pulled out a bronze dagger which was strapped to a leather sheath. “What?” Marcus whispered to himself while he watched the councilman hold up the dagger in front of him with his eyes still showing flashes of suspicion and uncertainty. For some reason, Lord Clifford could feel the presence of someone around there, but he was unable to tell if the person was gone and if he was still hanging aro

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE Marcus gave them a short distance while they moved from the antechamber of the King to the main room where he lay with five of the greatest Healers in the Kingdom attending to him.“What?” Marcus covered his mouth in order not to make a sound the moment he saw the state of the King whom he had seen a short while earlier that same day. His face had dark openings, and there were heavy bags underneath his eyes. His entire body was weak while he struggled to keep his eyes open, groaning at the weakness that invaded his bones. By the corner of the room was a table filled with several concoctions and herbs mixed by the Healers who had made several attempts with them in order to revive the King who they were scared was going to die. “My King! You are awake!” Lord Clifford moved closer to the King’s bed, and then he bent slowly and grabbed his hand with both hands. A smile appeared on his face afterward, but it vanished the moment he saw that the King was unable to rec

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX Marcus remained in his position as he watched the Councilman who angrily walked toward the exit of the King’s room, a few steps ahead of the guards who struggled to catch up with him. He grunted while he moved to an increasing speed, and just when he was about to walk past Marcus, he felt that sudden sensation that made him stop instantly while he looked at Marcus whom he was unable to see. At that moment, the soldiers walking behind him were able to catch up with him after taking a few steps, and they stopped to catch some air. “Is everything okay, Lord Clifford?” Asked one of the soldiers who trailed in the direction of his eyes, wondering what he was looking at, but the councilman ignored him and continued staring as though his life depended on it. Unable to get rid of the strange feeling that engulfed him instantly, he took three steps closer to Marcus and stood a few inches away from him, looking at his invisible face while Marcus struggled not to make a so

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN They continued walking along the passages in the palace as soon as they were out of the King’s chambers, and the moment they arrived at a safe corner away from earshot, Lord Clifford stopped immediately, turning to look at his guards one after the other. “Leave us!” He commanded the soldiers who bowed one after the other before walking away instantly. Marcus stood by a corner close to the men, while he waited patiently to hear what they were going to discuss, not minding the fact that they were silent for a while, watching as the soldiers walked away and stood behind two of the column pillars in the middle of the hall. “I hope this is important, Lord Micah. You know that we cannot be seen talking in this way. It will surely raise a lot of suspicion, but nothing should ruin our plans.”“I am fully aware of that, Lord Clifford. But this is really important, and I am sure that you must hear it. I forced myself to get away from the others just to tell you this.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT Lord Clifford sniggered with a vile expression on his face, nodding in confidence while the other man stared at him with curiosity, wondering what he was up to. “What do you plan on doing?” The Healer asked, seeming a bit wary of how dangerous the councilman was, but all he got was continuous snigger, making him become more nervous even though the intended actions were not meant for him. “I need you to do what I have asked you to do, Lord Micah. We have a meeting tonight, and we shall discuss the rest of the details of our mission at the venue. Inform the others, that no one should be late, and we should all endeavor to remain unsuspicious until all of this is over. We shall surely have victory.” Lord Clifford nodded in confidence while Lord Micah bowed down slightly toward him. Even though Marcus stood close to them silently, listening to everything they said, he was very restless and had several thoughts running through his mind. “Someone is coming! Quickly

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE “Why would Lord Micah be moving toward the Royal Prisons, Lord Clifford? What does he have to do with prisoners?” Draco asked, causing Lord Clifford to suddenly realize that he was pointing to the direction of the Royal Prisons. He slowly brought down his hand while he thought of a reasonable thing to say in response to the utterance from the Young Healer.“I think he mentioned that he was going to question the Prisoner who poisoned the King. Maybe he would be willing to tell him the kind of poison he gave to the King.” Lord Clifford lied, trying to maintain a good composure even though he seemed a bit anxious. “That’s strange…” Draco said softly, his expression showed signs that he found the councilman’s words very difficult to believe even though he couldn’t intentionally show that he doubted him. “Maybe you should wait for him at the hall, I am sure he will join you there as soon as he is done with his meeting with the prisoner. That could take a while, and

CHAPTER FORTY Lord Stephan grunted angrily while he glared his eyes as though Lord Clifford was standing in front of him. Slowly, he returned his sword to his sheathe and sighed heavily to get rid of some of the anger boiling inside him. “Go to a safe place, General. Somewhere we can talk without being heard or even seen. I will be right behind you.” Marcus urged the General who looked around for a while before he began to swiftly walk toward the weaponry by the other end of the palace. The distance from where he began his movement to the weaponry was about two hundred steps apart, but he was certain that it was the only safe place. Marcus was patiently walking behind him until he stopped in front of the door, and looked to his right, and then to his left. He pulled out a huge key hanging around his neck, and quickly unlocked the door before pushing it open with both hands. He walked in almost immediately and gave way for Marcus to walk in even though he wasn’t still able to see h
