The Fall of the Sky Grid
The roof of the train flies off into the dark. Cold wind rushes into the small room. I throw my arm up to block my face from the flying pieces of iron. Beside me, Elena drops to one knee. Her hand moves to her empty belt before she remembers her rifle is out of power.Four massive shapes drop down from the open roof into the dark cabin. They are heavy combat units in dark armor. Their chests glow with blue light. Their red eyes lock straight onto me."Target confirmed," a deep voice says from the lead unit. "Project Seven is secure. Prepare for extraction."I clench my right hand into a fist. The barcode on my skin burns with a hot, blinding light. I am not going back to the lab. I am not letting them put me back in a cage."Not today," I say.I lunge forward and slam my glowing fist directly into the lead unit's chest plate. A loud shockwave blasts outward. The armor shatters instantly. The heavy unit flies backward out through the open roof and crashes hard against the tunnel wall.
Freefall Into the Neon Abyss
The floor drops out completely.Gravity pulls us down into empty space as the massive communications tower breaks apart above us. Chunks of twisted steel and shattered glass rain down around our heads, spinning fast in the dark air.I keep my arms locked tight around Elena. The wind tears at our clothes, screaming so loud I can barely hear my own thoughts. Below us, the bottomless canyon of District 3 opens up like a dark monster waiting to swallow us whole. Neon signs flash in the blur far beneath our feet, looking like tiny dots of red and blue light."We are falling too fast!" Elena shouts, pressing her face against my chest to block the biting wind."Hold on!" I answer back.I focus all the power left in my body down into
The Price of Betrayal
Red laser dots dance across my chest like tiny drops of blood.Sloan stands near the edge of the balcony, herpulse rifle resting steady against her shoulder. Her dark jacket flutters in the cold wind, and her long scar looks stark and pale under the harsh neon glow of the surrounding towers. Four stealth transport ships hover in a tight circle around us, blocking every path of escape."Hand over the boy, and maybe I let the girl walk," Sloan says, her voice completely calm.I feel Elena stiffen beside me. Her fingers tighten around the handle of her combat knife. She does not look at me, but I know her mind is already running through ten different ways to trick Sloan, slice her throat, or blow up the balcony. That is who Elena is. She does not panic when things go wrong; she looks for an angle.

The Ghost in the Sublevel
Sloan gasps, her fingers clawing at the cold steel blade pinning her shoulder to the concrete wall. Blood drips down her dark jacket, pooling fast on the dusty floor.I stare at Elena. My chest burns, and my mind races. Just seconds ago, Sloan told us every bounty hunter in the city knew we were on that balcony. Now Sloan is bleeding out, pinned by the very person who pulled us through the simulation."You planned this," I say, my voice dropping low as I take a step back.Elena does not blink. She pulls the heavy pulse rifle tighter against her shoulder, keeping the barrel pointed down at the floor between us. Her face is completely blank, hiding every thought behind cold grey eyes."I always plan two steps ahead, Caleb," Elena replies quietly. "If Sloan did not set off
The Iron Juggernaut
Twin red lights cut through the black tunnel like daggers. The heavy beast of scrap metal and tank plating takes another slow step forward, crushing the rusted railroad ties beneath its tracks with a deafening crunch. The air grows instantly thick with the smell of hot oil and ozone. A massive plasma cannon mounted on its right shoulder whirs to life, spinning up with a high-pitched whine that makes my teeth ache."Get down!" Elena shouts. She shoves me hard to the side, throwing us both behind a thick concrete pillar just as a massive bolt of blue plasma tears through the space where we were standing a second before. The heat from the blast singes my jacket, and the force of the explosion shatters the brick wall behind us into a million tiny pieces.Dust and smoke fill
The Trap Inside the Wall
A cold, synthetic voice bounces off the metal walls of the narrow corridor.“Welcome back, Project Seven. Authentication complete. Sector lockdown engaged.”The heavy steel door we just unlocked slams shut on its own with a loud, metallic crash. Before I can even raise my hands, thick iron bars drop down from the ceiling on both sides of the hallway, sealing us inside a tiny cage of reinforced steel.Pitch-black darkness wraps around us, thick and heavy."Elena!" I call out, reaching out blindly in the dark.My fingers brush against the cold fabric of her jacket. She grabs my wrist instantly, her grip tight and steady."Don't move," Elena says, her voice low and sharp.
The Weight of Blood
My father’s face on the screen looks older than I remember, his eyes tired and lined with deep worry."If you are watching this, Caleb," his voice echoes off the cold steel walls of the underground chamber, "it means the simulation has finally collapsed. You were never just a test subject. The Council didn't build you to harvest data."He pauses, looking down at a small silver drive in his hand before looking back up at the camera."They built you to destroy the grid from the inside. And Elena knew that from the very beginning."The words hang in the air like heavy stones. I slowly turn my head to look at Elena. She stands stiff and still beside the computer terminal, her face completely pale. She is not looking at the screen at all. Her eyes are locked on the floo
The Last Choice
The heavy iron service hatch slams shut above my head with a loud, deafening bang.I hit the floor of the narrow maintenance chute hard, sliding down through the dark, cold pipe before crashing into a pile of tangled cables. The air in my lungs vanishes. I scramble back up to my feet instantly, throwing my hands against the metal hatch and pounding my fists against the steel until my knuckles bleed."Elena!" I call out, my voice cracking in the dark. "Open the door! Elena!"No answer comes from the other side. Only the low, mechanical hum of the countdown timer echoing through the metal walls.“THIRTY SECONDS TO SECTOR DESTRUCTION,” the synthetic voice announces through the intercom.I grip the heavy locking wheel
The Spark of the Rebellion
A red dot on the small data screen points straight at the heart of the city.I stare at the coordinates glowing in my hand. Elena's message flashes across the display, telling me to finish what we started at the central spire. Around me, the rebel scouts stand ready in the dark cavern, their rifles gripped tight as they wait for my word. The grief in my chest hardens into pure fire. The Council took my father, they trapped thousands of innocent people inside a fake world, and now they think they have buried Elena beneath tons of concrete. They are wrong."We are not hiding in these tunnels anymore," I say, looking up at the rebel scout leader. "We take the fight straight to their front door."The scout gives a sharp nod, pulling a heavy tactical map from her belt and spr
The Price of Survival
A live security feed lights up the screen, and the air leaves my lungs all at once.Elena is alive. She sits inside a high-security glass cell on the top floor of the central spire. Heavy steel cuffs bind her wrists to a metal chair, and pale bruises mark the side of her face. Yet, even trapped behind thick glass, her gray eyes look straight into the camera lens with a cold, defiant fire. She does not look beaten. She looks ready to burn the whole tower down.Director Vance smiles, pressing a key on his hand-held control pad to freeze the video frame."Surprised?" Vance asks, his voice smooth and calm. "You thought the blast in Sector 4 killed her? Amateurs blow up tunnels. The Council traps assets."My hands begin to shake,
