A cold, synthetic voice bounces off the metal walls of the narrow corridor.

“Welcome back, Project Seven. Authentication complete. Sector lockdown engaged.”

The heavy steel door we just unlocked slams shut on its own with a loud, metallic crash. Before I can even raise my hands, thick iron bars drop down from the ceiling on both sides of the hallway, sealing us inside a tiny cage of reinforced steel.

Pitch-black darkness wraps around us, thick and heavy.

"Elena!" I call out, reaching out blindly in the dark.

My fingers brush against the cold fabric of her jacket. She grabs my wrist instantly, her grip tight and steady.

"Don't move," Elena says, her voice low and sharp. "The decoding tool must have triggered a hidden backup circuit. This isn't a regular maintenance door. It’s an isolation trap."

"A trap built by who?" I ask, pulling the white energy from my skin so it casts a pale, glowing light across our faces.

The bright white glow illuminates the narrow corridor. The walls around us are lined with thick glass panels, and behind the glass, rows of dormant robotic units hang motionless in dark storage slots. They look like sleeping soldiers waiting for a command.

"Not the Council," Elena says, her eyes narrowing as she looks closely at the control panel beside the iron door. She uses the tip of her combat knife to pop open the service hatch of the keypad. "Look at the wiring. This is old Syndicate hardware. Someone knew we would come down this line."

"Sloan?" I ask.

"No," Elena answers, her fingers moving fast inside the open panel, twisting wires together to force a manual override. "Sloan was just a bounty hunter working for a paycheck. This is personal. Someone wanted us to break out of the upper towers, and someone guided us straight into this sector."

Before I can ask what she means, the red warning lights inside the corridor flicker back to life, casting a harsh, bloody glow over everything.

The glass panels in front of the sleeping robotic units click open one by one.

Hissing sounds echo through the narrow space as steam vents from their chests. Their optical sensors snap on, glowing a bright, angry yellow instead of the Council's usual blue.

"Caleb," Elena says, her voice losing its calm edge for the first time since I met her. "Get ready."

The front row of units steps forward, their heavy metal boots slamming against the floor. They do not look like the slow, heavy cleanup units we fought in the subway. These ones are sleek, fast, and built entirely for close combat. Their hands end in long, razor-sharp steel blades.

"How many are there?" I ask, my heart hammering against my ribs as I step in front of Elena.

"Too many," she replies, leveling her pulse rifle at the glass. "And the door is completely locked from the outside. We have to break through the wall or we die in this cage."

The first unit lunges forward, smashing its fist directly into the glass panel separating us. The thick glass cracks instantly, spiderwebs of white fractures spreading across the surface.

I do not wait for it to hit us again.

I wind back my right arm, letting the white energy flare so bright it hurts to look at. I punch straight through the cracked glass, my fist slamming directly into the chest of the robotic unit.

The impact sends a massive shockwave through its frame. Sparks fly in every direction as the internal power core overloads and explodes. The machine collapses into a heap of twisted metal inside its own storage slot.

"Keep going!" Elena shouts, firing three rapid shots from her pulse rifle into the unit beside mine.

The second machine stumbles back, its head blowing apart in a shower of hot sparks. But behind it, four more units step out of the shadows, their blades raised and ready to strike.

The narrow corridor turns into a chaotic blur of motion. I throw wave after wave of white energy into the advancing ranks, smashing armor plates and throwing heavy chunks of steel against the walls. Elena fights right beside me, her combat knife flashing in the red light as she dodges a sweeping blade and drives her weapon deep into the control joint of a unit trying to flank us.

We are fighting back-to-back, our movements fast and desperate, but the machines just keep coming out of the dark alcoves.

"The power box is behind that main terminal!" Elena yells over the noise of grinding metal, pointing toward a heavy steel panel at the end of the hall. "If you overload that junction, it will short-circuit the whole block!"

"Cover me!" I snap.

I leap over the wreckage of the first machine, charging straight toward the end of the corridor. Two units pivot their blades toward me, moving to cut me off before I can reach the panel.

I slide across the floor beneath their swinging arms, coming up hard against the steel terminal. I slam both hands directly onto the heavy metal cover.

I pour every ounce of energy left in my body into the panel, letting the white light consume my entire arms up to my shoulders.

The terminal groans under the pressure. The lights flicker wildly from red to white, then pitch black.

With a deafening roar, a massive electrical shockwave surges through the floor and walls. Every robotic unit in the corridor freezes instantly. Their yellow eyes blink twice, fade out, and go completely dead.

Silence drops over the narrow space, broken only by the sound of our heavy breathing and the hiss of cooling steam.

I let out a long breath, my arms shaking with exhaustion as the white glow on my skin fades away to nothing. I turn around to look at Elena.

She is leaning against the wall, her chest heaving, wiping a smudge of black soot from her cheek. She looks tired, but alive.

"That was too close," I say, walking back toward her.

"We aren't out yet," Elena replies, pointing her tactical light at the heavy steel door at the end of the hall.

The electrical surge forced the manual locks open. The iron bars slowly slide back up into the ceiling, and the heavy door swings outward on its own, creaking loudly in the quiet corridor.

Beyond the open door lies a wide, circular chamber lit by flickering green emergency lights. In the center of the room stands a massive computer terminal with its main screen glowing brightly in the dark.

We walk slowly through the open doorway, stepping into the center of the circular room.

I look at the main screen on the terminal. Lines of data scroll past at high speed, showing a detailed map of the city districts, the core network, and a flashing red file labeled with a name I never expected to see.

My own name.

CALEB VANCE - SUBJECT FILE 07 - VERIFICATION COMPLETE.

"What is this place?" I ask, staring at the screen.

Elena walks up to the terminal and presses a single key on the board. The screen changes, bringing up a video file dated three years ago.

The video plays instantly. The camera angle shows a bright, sterile laboratory inside the upper tier. A man in a clean white coat stands beside a glass containment tube.

I freeze. The man in the video is my father, a scientist who supposedly died in the upper district fires before I woke up in the fake tavern.

In the video, my father looks directly into the camera lens, his face grim and tired.

"If you are watching this, Caleb," my father says from the screen, his voice echoing clearly across the empty chamber, "it means the simulation has finally collapsed. You were never just a test subject. The Council didn't build you to harvest data."

He pauses, looking down at a small silver drive in his hand before looking back up.

"They built you to destroy the grid from the inside. And Elena knew that from the very beginning."

I slowly turn my head around to look at Elena.

Her face is completely pale. She is not looking at the screen. She is looking straight down at the floor, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.
