Ryan set the notebook down and picked up his phone, and scrolled to Danny's number, which was still in his contacts from the Lin Group years, and sat with his thumb over the call button for a brief moment.

Starting the company felt different from the earlier moves against Tyler.

Those had been reactive, a man defending himself by attacking sideways and in a way was something else.

This was choosing, deliberately and with full awareness of what it cost, to become something that could be seen, something with a name and an address and a purpose that extended beyond survival into actual ambition.

He thought about what the system had said in the hospital, that first real conversation when Ryan had still been half convinced he was dreaming the whole thing.

With a deliberate movement, he pressed call.

Danny picked up on the third ring, his voice came the same as Ryan remembered it , the voice of a man who had stopped being surprised by most things a long time ago.

"Danny Reeves," he said.

"Danny," Ryan said. "It's Ryan Cole. I know it's been a while, and I know my name probably comes with some baggage right now, but before you say anything I want to say two things. First, everything they said about me was fabricated, and I can prove it and second, I'm starting something, and I think you'd be good at it, and I think you'd find it interesting for reasons that go beyond the money."

There was a pause on the other end, the kind that meant someone was actually listening rather than just waiting for their turn to speak.

"Two questions," Danny said finally.

"Go ahead," Ryan said.

"When you say you can prove it?" Danny asked, "do you mean you have the evidence already, or you mean you are confident you will get it?"

"Getting there," Ryan said, which was honest enough.

"And the second question," Danny said. "The thing you're starting. Is it clean?"

Ryan looked around his half emptied apartment, at the notebook on the floor and the cold coffee and the forty three dollars that had quietly grown to four hundred and twelve without him doing anything dramatic to earn it, and thought about what clean meant to a man in his particular position.

"It will be," Ryan said. "That's the whole point of it."

Another pause came in between them.

"Send me what you have so far," Danny said. "I'm not saying yes yet, of which I'm not saying no either, which from me is closer to yes than most people realize."

Ryan exhaled, slow and quiet so Danny would not hear the relief in it. "I'll send it tonight."

He ended the call and sat for a moment in the particular quiet of a decision that had just been made, the kind that does not feel momentous in the instant but that you recognize later as the thing everything else turned on.

"Good start," the system said.

"It's one call," Ryan said.

"Every structure starts with one load bearing piece," the system said. "Danny Reeves is yours. Now there is something you should know before you get too comfortable with the momentum you are building."

Ryan looked up from the notebook. "What."

"Carter's people have been asking questions about you in the industry," the system said. "Quietly, through intermediaries, two people you have not spoken to in over a year have been contacted in the last forty eight hours. Someone is building a picture of who Ryan Cole is now, not who he was before the scandal."

Ryan felt a cold chill settle in his chest.

"How long before the picture is complete enough to be useful to him," Ryan said.

"At the current rate," the system said, "seventy two hours. Possibly less if the third contact they are planning to make tonight goes the way Carter expects it to."

"Who's the third contact," Ryan said.

The system paused, and this time the pause was long enough that Ryan felt his body tension rise before the answer came.

"Danny Reeves," the system said. "Carter's people will reach out to him within the next three hours. Which means the call you just made may have started a clock you did not intend to start.”

Ryan quickly called Danny before he called Frank Castillo.Danny picked up on the first ring, which had become his pattern whenever the information was too heavy to sit with comfortably."Talk to me," Ryan said."I went back through the email thread," Danny said, "the one between Whitmore and V.C, and there is a name that appears in the metadata of three separate attachments, not in the body of the emails, not somewhere obvious, in the metadata, the kind of place you only find it if you are specifically looking or if you have been doing this long enough that looking there is just habit.""Who is it?" Ryan asked."A man named Richard," Danny said. "He is listed as the Lin Group's Chief of Internal Affairs, been in that position for sixteen years, reports directly to Walter Lin, and has had unrestricted access to Marcus Lin's office, schedule, and personal correspondence since Marcus was nineteen years old."Ryan sat down on the floor of his apartment. He knew the name, knew the face at

Ryan could not that night, he lay on the mattress with his eyes closed and his mind doing the thing it did when a problem was too large and too close at the same time, turning it over and over like a stone with no flat side, unable to find the angle that let him set it down and rest.Someone inside the Lin Group. Someone Marcus trusted without question. Someone who had been there longer than Walter Lin himself and had watched Ryan's entire trajectory from loyal bodyguard to beaten man in an alley with the calm patience of a person who knew exactly how the story would end because they had written several of the chapters themselves. He got up at five, made coffee with the cheap grounds he had been rationing for four days, and sat on the floor with the notebook open again and the system quiet at the edge of his thoughts, waiting."Give me what you have so far," Ryan demanded."The three candidates share specific characteristics," the system began. "All three have been with the Lin Group

"Solid enough that if you had the right lawyer in the right room with this evidence,Tyler Briggs would not be your primary concern by the end of that meeting," Danny said"But I don't have a lawyer.""Not yet," Danny said. "But I know someone who owes me a conversation, a man named Charles, he is sharp, discreet, and he has a specific history with corporate conspiracy cases that makes him exactly the kind of person you want sitting across from the Lin Group's legal team.""Set it up then" Ryan said, without hesitation."Already texting him," Danny said. "Now tell me about Vince Carter, because his initials are all over these emails and I want to understand exactly how deep that connection goes before we walk into any room with anyone."Ryan told him about everything, not just the emails but the Beacon Medical situation, the monitored contracts, Arthur Benn and the pharmaceutical manifests, the midnight text from a number above Carter's level, all of it delivered in the flat and precis

"No," the system said, with something in its tone that Ryan had not heard before, something almost careful, like it had been waiting for him to reach this conclusion on his own rather than pushing him toward it. "You were a specific one."Ryan sat with that for a long time, longer than he sat with most things, because it changed the emotional weight of everything he had been doing and everything he was planning to do, shifted it from the register of personal injury into something colder and more serious and considerably more necessary. He had been building a company and planning a careful takedown of a corrupt security consultant and his slightly more powerful boss, and that was still the right plan, the right pace, the right approach for where he was in his current capabilities, but underneath it now was a different understanding of what this ultimately was and what it ultimately required."Okay," Ryan said finally, to the lamp and the notebook and the system and the city outside the

"Okay, Sam first," the system said in confirmation. "And Ryan, there is something worth noting about where you are right now that I think you are undervaluing.""What's that," Ryan said."Three weeks ago you were in an alley," the system said. "Tonight you have a company with a name, a founding member who knows the industry, and enough documented evidence to begin building a real legal case against the people who put you there. That is not nothing, it is not even close to nothing, and a man who does not recognise his own progress tends to make decisions from a place of scarcity even when scarcity is no longer the full truth of his situation."Ryan sat with that for a moment."You know," Ryan said eventually, "for a system that claims it is not a therapist, you spend a lot of time doing therapy.""I spend a lot of time keeping my host functional," the system said. "The methods are occasionally similar."Ryan closed the laptop and lay back on the mattress on the floor, staring at the ce

Ryan called Danny back before the thought had fully finished forming, because three hours was not a lot of runway and Carter's people were not the kind of people who left a conversation neutral, they came in with a specific version of events already prepared and they were very good at making that version feel like the one that had always made the most sense.Danny picked up on the first ring this time, which meant he had been sitting with the earlier call rather than moving on from it, and that was either a good sign or a sign that Ryan had already made him nervous enough to stay close to his phone."That was fast," Danny said."Something came up," Ryan said. "Something you need to know before someone else gets to you first, and I need you to hear it from me because the version you are about to hear from them is going to be designed to make you put the phone down and walk away."There was a silence on Danny's end that felt careful rather than alarmed, the silence of a man who had spen
