Chapter 1
CRACK!!The ceramic plate shattered into pieces the moment it fell to the floor with a loud noise. The woman who had slammed the plate on the ground was now glaring at a stunned waiter, rage pouring out of her eyes. “Didn’t I ask you to stop doing these shitty minimum wage jobs and embarrassing me?” Elijah Wilson, the waiter in question, took a few moments to react. He calmly placed the tray of oysters on the table, before bending down to pick up the shards of the broken plate. He straightened up, his hands clutching the broken pieces. Despite the acidic pang of humiliation choking his throat, he tried to speak in a steady and formal voice.“Kathy, this is just a temporary arrangement. I’m only doing it for you, because you wanted the jewelry set, and a new designer bag. I thought I’d earn some extra cash so I could…”Kathy’s icy cold voice cut him off mid-sentence. “Can’t you see I already have all those things?”She gestured toward the table in front of her, where glossy shoppin
Chapter 2
An old ceiling fan was humming softly as Elijah’s heavy eyelids fluttered open. He groaned softly, as sensation returned to his body, so did the pain. It felt as if every single bone in his body was first shattered into tiny pieces, and then loosely put back together. Meanwhile, his head was a different story, throbbing like a hammer was banging against his skull.Where was he? Was he dead? Was this heaven... or hell?He blinked a few times, trying to clear his blurred vision. The bright sunlight coming through through a thin curtain hurt his eyes. He realized he was lying on a soft mattress inside a modest, small apartment, filled with the smell of strong antiseptic and herbal medicine. For five whole days, Elijah Wilson had been trapped in an endless nightmare, swinging in and out of consciousness. He remembered brief flashes of feverish dreams, cold towels on his forehead, and the taste of bitter medicine being poured into his mouth. But right now, his mind was finally cleari
Chapter 3
Sweat mixed with the blood seeping through Elijah's bandages, stinging his cracked skin.He stared at Kathy, his eyes desperate, searchingly scanning her face for any trace of the woman he had loved for three years."Kathy... please," Elijah gasped out, his voice cracking beneath the weight of his despair. He reached his hand through the cold metal bars of the gate, his fingers trembling in the air toward her. "Why are you doing this? Why do you want to leave me like this? What happened to us?"Kathy didn't move an inch. She stood on the marble porch beside Jordan, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her lips pulled back into a look of absolute disgust."Kathy, think about everything we went through!" Elijah pleaded, tears spilling over his bruised cheeks as the memories came rushing back. "Think about college! We spent such good times together... those were the best years of our lives! You used to tell me that you were happiest whenever we were together, no matter how simple
Chapter 4
The afternoon sun was blazing hot while Elijah dragged his bruised and battered body down the hot road. He was wandering aimlessly through the city streets, feeling like his life had completely lost its direction in the middle of nowhere.Every single word Kathy had said to him at the gates kept echoing inside his mind over and over again, like a painful nightmare. The woman he had done everything for... the woman he had slaved away for day and night... had so little regard for him!She had thrown his silver ring into the dirt like it was nothing. But what she didn't know was that Elijah had been secretly saving every single penny in his bank account for the past year. He had been skipping meals just to save enough money to buy her a real diamond ring and replace the gold-plated one with lab-grown diamonds that he had originally given her.But she didn't want to stay by his side at all! And why would she? She was getting everything she ever wanted through her new boyfriend. Jord
Chapter 5
Elijah had spent the last night shivering on a cold bench at a nearby park. He didn't have the courage to go back home and face Kathy after everything that had happened, nor did he have anywhere else in the city to go. In the morning, he finally picked himself up and made his way towards their apartment, hoping that he might talk to Kathy for the last time, or at least get his wallet and belongings from there so he could survive. His body ached with every step, but he forced himself to walk up the stairs. But just as he turned the corner near their door, he froze in his tracks. There were several large, black trash bags placed right at the door of the apartment. Kathy was standing there, dusting her hands over one of the plastic bags with an expression of disgust on her face. Elijah swallowed hard, his voice raspy as he spoke up. "Kathy... why are there so many trash bags here?" Kathy turned her head with an icy glare. "I had to put your stuff somewhere, after all. Now you
Chapter 6
Josie stepped out into the hallway, holding a thin gold chain with an old, strange-looking metal pendant attached to it.She walked past her furious sister and handed Elijah the chain and the locket. She had seen it lying in the back of Kathy's drawer earlier, and now she was giving it back to him so that he would leave her sister's life forever."Here," Josie said softly, her face neutral as she placed the cool metal into Elijah’s trembling, open palm. "Take it and just leave."Kathy’s eyes went wide with sudden rage. She got extremely irritated and scolded her sister loudly right there in the open hallway."Josie!! What the hell are you doing?!" Kathy screamed, trying to snatch the locket back, but Elijah quickly pulled his hand away and clutched the locket tightly against his chest. "Why are you giving him anything?! Are you out of your mind?!"Josie didn't back down. She looked her older sister dead in the eye and didn't change her stance at all."He was just earning his mo
Chapter 7
“Oh, I get it now!" Elijah shouted, shaking his head with a bitter smile. "So this is your new trick, huh?! Using my parents' memory to guilt me or blackmail me into coming along with you?!"He took a step backward, pointing a trembling finger at the two of them. Tears of pure frustration welled up in his eyes, but his voice was full of deep resentment and exhaustion."I told you both plain and simple—I am completely broke!" Elijah yelled at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing down the empty street. "I don't have a single penny to give to anyone! Not to you, not to Kathy, not to anybody! If anything, if you two take one look at my bank balance right now, you'd be the ones handing me money out of sheer pity! I don't even have six cents left to my name!!"He threw his head back and laughed at the absolute absurdity of the situation. Here he was, covered in dried mud and blood, being followed by two strangers talking about his useless locket as if it were made of solid gold."So
Chapter 8
Mia broke into a wide, triumphant smile as her feet dangled in the empty air, looking down at Elijah with pure joy."See?!" Mia cheered out triumphantly, her dark ponytail swaying gently in the breeze. "I knew all along you could do it, Master! I knew it!"She turned her head to look at the old man floating right beside her, whom she addressed as Master Caleb, and teased him with a mischievous grin."Master Caleb, you must be enjoying this immensely, right?" Mia giggled, though her face looked a little pale. "Knowing full well that I have a terrible fear of heights and get dizzy whenever I'm floating in the air like this!"Master Caleb retorted dryly, glaring at her while floating awkwardly in his formal suit. "I have been teaching you for years, Mia, and you still haven't learned a single thing about composure!"Elijah, staring at the two of them suspended completely in midair three feet off the ground, backed away until his shoulders hit a nearby lamp post. His brain was compl
