CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
“HERO OR VILLAIN?”The words were boldly written on the whiteboard as the topic of the day.He capped the blue marker and made his way back to the teacher’s table at the front of the room before sitting on it.This was Mr. Adrian Azuma. A history teacher, a married man, and someone whose life was about to change in a few hours.“That is the topic we have today. What do you all think?” he asked his class of forty students.“Aren’t heroes the good guys and villains the bad guys?” a student asked as he stood up.“In a general sense, yes and also no,” Adrian replied, pointing to another female student raising her hand. This was Alice. She was the student president and class captain of the class. She was smart, beautiful, and had a good personality that made her friends with everyone, including teachers.“I believe that villains are the people who do bad things of their own selfish accord, thinking of nobody else’s safety.”“That is a strong point right there. Not quite right, but okay,” A
CHAPTER 2 — TO THE EARTH WE COME, TO THE EARTH WE WILL RETURN
The coffin sank slowly into the wet earth as the funeral came to an end. Rain poured down on umbrellas of different colours, turning the graveyard into a gathering of people dressed in black suits.Adrian stood with his own umbrella over his head, dressed in an all-black corporate suit. His eyes stayed fixed on the grave of his wife, his lover, his anchor. Sarah. The person who had brought joy into his life was now slowly being lowered into the ground. Adrian still felt like all of this was a joke.He had woken up days earlier, injured and bandaged in several places. The doctors told him that he was lucky to be alive because when they found him, he was already dead. The only name he kept repeating was Sarah as he constantly asked whether she was safe but reality hit him harder than expected when he heard she didn't make it.He didn't cry, as it felt pointless at this point. All his emotions just shut off as he tried to tell himself that all of this was a joke. A prank that would end w
CHAPTER 3 — THE BLACK CROSS
Adrian barely opened his eyes when the sensation of bright lights and sounds hit him all at once.Loud music boomed from speakers, and colourful lights illuminated the crowded room filled with people.Adrian groaned as he raised his hand to shield his eyes while his brain tried to process everything that had happened up to this point. All he could remember was that he was in an alleyway a few hours ago, and now he was in a bar?He immediately sat up straight on the chair he was sitting on, holding his nose to avoid the smell of alcohol and cigarettes as people were everywhere, on the dance floor, at tables, and on chairs, laughing, drinking, and having the time of their lives.Adrian was sitting at the long waiter booth area where the bartender usually mixed drinks and slid them across the table to customers. He watched the bartender mix a drink and slide a glass cup toward his direction as the cup stopped exactly in front of him.He looked at the amber-coloured liquid inside the cup
CHAPTER 4 — TRIAL BY BLOOD
Adrian learned the hard way that Lirielle wasn't exaggerating when she said getting accepted into the Black Cross was the easy part as the real nightmare came afterward. The past three months had been the most stressful and punishing phase of Adrian's life as every single day went into a cycle of pain and exhaustion that pushed every limit he had.He spent up to twelve hours in the gym pushing weights, dumbbells, barbells and Machine weights as these were his best friends for the past three months. His legs ached as he ran laps around the underground tracks until he lost count, and it always ended up with his clothes dripped in sweat.Push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and other training exercises filled his days.He did reps he never imagined were possible, begging for rest only to be shouted at to get back up and continue training.By the end of it, Adrian was sure he could walk into any special forces and get through their selection process easily. The training was that brutal, it was tha
CHAPTER 5 — WELCOME TO THE CROSS. THE BLACK CROSS
Adrian finally forced the coughing under his control as both of his hands shot up into the air. Every gun and blade in the room was still pointed straight at him, and with one pull on the trigger, he would be joining Sarah sooner than expected. He was confused and had no idea why the weapons had come out in the first place.Seconds passed by, and Adrian stayed completely still, his heart beating so hard in his chest. No fangs, no red eyes and no sudden bloodlust. Just a man who choked on a cup of wine while staring at a dozen serious weapons.Victor, the Boss, stepped forward, grabbed Adrian’s face with both hands, and stared deep into his eyes for a full thirty seconds. The intensity of his stare made Adrian think they were about to kill him, and finally the Boss released him and turned back to the team.“He’s clean,” Victor announced.Cheers rose around the table as all the weapons lowered gradually, and clapping and laughter filled the room. Even Lirielle, who had looked ready to
CHAPTER 6 – FIRST MISSION
It was well past midnight, and The city still felt as alive as it did during the day.Cars rolled past with their headlights shining through the night. Groups of late-night workers in wrinkled clothes, party-goers in short dresses and half-buttoned collars, and delivery riders on buzzing scooters moved along the road.Even at this hour, many stores stayed open, their front glass glowing with lights and playing soft music.Adrian stood beneath a large tree near the edge of a busy road, the leaves over his head rustling softly. He checked his phone and saw that it was 1:15 am. The message he received was clear and short. “Gear up and wait at this location.”He wore the standard Black Cross field outfit. It consisted of a black blazer with the faint silver outline of the Black Cross over the left chest, matching black trousers and sturdy running shoes. In the backpack hung over one shoulder he carried his silver dagger, the special handgun already loaded with silver rounds, and a couple
CHAPTER 7 – FIRST BLOOD
Two of the vampires stepped forward immediately, blood still dripping from their long fangs. The room was almost completely dark, the only light coming from a cracked window, yet Adrian could see every detail with unnatural sight. He could see the blood on the floor, the way the vampires’ muscles tensed, even the faint dust motes floating in the air.The BP he had given to his Perception attribute was finally showing itself in a real fight. The first pair charged at the same time as Adrian raised the silenced handgun and fired four bullets into the chest of the lead vampire. The silver burned through flesh with a sizzling sound and the creature dropped hard, twitching once before going cold.He sidestepped the second one’s claws, smashed the heavy butt of his gun into its skull with a solid crack, then put a clean shot through the side of its head at close range as dark blood sprayed across the wall.He barely had time to turn before the third vampire slammed into him like a freight t
CHAPTER 8: A NEW MORNING
The ride back to Black Cross headquarters was far quieter than the ride out.The adrenaline that had carried them through the mission had drained away and had been replaced by the deep exhaustion that always followed a successful mission. The black van moved smoothly through the sleeping city, passing empty intersections where traffic lights changed for no one.Charles had somehow managed to fall asleep while sitting upright, his head bouncing lightly against the window every time the van hit a small bump in the road.Rika sat beside him, scrolling through her phone with one earbud hanging loose from her ear and the other still in place.Dante leaned back with his eyes closed, though whether he was truly asleep or simply resting was impossible to tell.Lirielle occupied the front passenger seat as usual, and she hadn’t spoken a single word since they left the burning building behind.Adrian sat near the rear doors, staring absentmindedly at the silver dagger resting across his lap. D
CHAPTER 9: THE RETURN
The iron gates of Ashvale Secondary School looked exactly the same as they had three months ago.Adrian stood just outside them for a long moment, hands buried in the pockets of his jacket, staring at the familiar buildings beyond the gate.Students streamed past him in small groups, laughing, arguing, and checking their phones, some rushing to class and others walking nonchalantly as their.None of them paid him any real attention. To them, he was just another adult arriving late.He took a slow breath, steadying himself, and walked in.The moment he stepped into the main office the first teacher spotted him.Mrs. Jane, the literature teacher, froze mid-conversation with a colleague as her eyes widened in pure disbelief.“Adrian…?”The man beside her turned and then another teacher looked over. Within seconds, several heads had turned in his direction.“Is that…?”“He’s back?”“I thought he transferred.”Adrian gave a small, polite nod and a faint smile as he passed them. He didn’t st
CHAPTER 10 — THE FIRST SOLO MISSION
Adrian’s gloves collided with Charles’s with a sharp thud of fists hitting padded gloves.Adrian and Charles, the coffee guy, stood in the center of the boxing ring, both wearing full protective gear. Headguards covered their faces, while padded gloves and body protectors protected their hands and torsos. Sweat had already soaked through Adrian’s shirt beneath the gearCharles bounced lightly on his feet, never staying in one place for more than a second.Adrian raised his guard, and Charles grinned.“You ready, new guy?”“Come find out.”Charles didn't need to be told twice as he stepped forward and fired a quick jab, but Adrian blocked it.Another jab followed forcing Adrian to slip to the side, but Charles was already throwing a right hook. The glove connected with Adrian's headgear and snapped his head sideways.“Fuck!” he cursed as he shook his head.Charles laughed as he backed away, creating distance.“Too slow!”Adrian steadied himself and charged forward. This time, he threw
