  • CHAPTER 8: A NEW MORNING

The ride back to Black Cross headquarters was far quieter than the ride out.The adrenaline that had carried them through the mission had drained away and had been replaced by the deep exhaustion that always followed a successful mission. The black van moved smoothly through the sleeping city, passing empty intersections where traffic lights changed for no one.Charles had somehow managed to fall asleep while sitting upright, his head bouncing lightly against the window every time the van hit a small bump in the road.Rika sat beside him, scrolling through her phone with one earbud hanging loose from her ear and the other still in place.Dante leaned back with his eyes closed, though whether he was truly asleep or simply resting was impossible to tell.Lirielle occupied the front passenger seat as usual, and she hadn’t spoken a single word since they left the burning building behind.Adrian sat near the rear doors, staring absentmindedly at the silver dagger resting across his lap. D

  • CHAPTER 7 – FIRST BLOOD

Two of the vampires stepped forward immediately, blood still dripping from their long fangs. The room was almost completely dark, the only light coming from a cracked window, yet Adrian could see every detail with unnatural sight. He could see the blood on the floor, the way the vampires’ muscles tensed, even the faint dust motes floating in the air.The BP he had given to his Perception attribute was finally showing itself in a real fight. The first pair charged at the same time as Adrian raised the silenced handgun and fired four bullets into the chest of the lead vampire. The silver burned through flesh with a sizzling sound and the creature dropped hard, twitching once before going cold.He sidestepped the second one’s claws, smashed the heavy butt of his gun into its skull with a solid crack, then put a clean shot through the side of its head at close range as dark blood sprayed across the wall.He barely had time to turn before the third vampire slammed into him like a freight t

  • CHAPTER 6 – FIRST MISSION

It was well past midnight, and The city still felt as alive as it did during the day.Cars rolled past with their headlights shining through the night. Groups of late-night workers in wrinkled clothes, party-goers in short dresses and half-buttoned collars, and delivery riders on buzzing scooters moved along the road.Even at this hour, many stores stayed open, their front glass glowing with lights and playing soft music.Adrian stood beneath a large tree near the edge of a busy road, the leaves over his head rustling softly. He checked his phone and saw that it was 1:15 am. The message he received was clear and short. “Gear up and wait at this location.”He wore the standard Black Cross field outfit. It consisted of a black blazer with the faint silver outline of the Black Cross over the left chest, matching black trousers and sturdy running shoes. In the backpack hung over one shoulder he carried his silver dagger, the special handgun already loaded with silver rounds, and a couple

  • CHAPTER 5 — WELCOME TO THE CROSS. THE BLACK CROSS

Adrian finally forced the coughing under his control as both of his hands shot up into the air. Every gun and blade in the room was still pointed straight at him, and with one pull on the trigger, he would be joining Sarah sooner than expected. He was confused and had no idea why the weapons had come out in the first place.Seconds passed by, and Adrian stayed completely still, his heart beating so hard in his chest. No fangs, no red eyes and no sudden bloodlust. Just a man who choked on a cup of wine while staring at a dozen serious weapons.Victor, the Boss, stepped forward, grabbed Adrian’s face with both hands, and stared deep into his eyes for a full thirty seconds. The intensity of his stare made Adrian think they were about to kill him, and finally the Boss released him and turned back to the team.“He’s clean,” Victor announced.Cheers rose around the table as all the weapons lowered gradually, and clapping and laughter filled the room. Even Lirielle, who had looked ready to

  • CHAPTER 4 — TRIAL BY BLOOD

Adrian learned the hard way that Lirielle wasn't exaggerating when she said getting accepted into the Black Cross was the easy part as the real nightmare came afterward. The past three months had been the most stressful and punishing phase of Adrian's life as every single day went into a cycle of pain and exhaustion that pushed every limit he had.He spent up to twelve hours in the gym pushing weights, dumbbells, barbells and Machine weights as these were his best friends for the past three months. His legs ached as he ran laps around the underground tracks until he lost count, and it always ended up with his clothes dripped in sweat.Push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and other training exercises filled his days.He did reps he never imagined were possible, begging for rest only to be shouted at to get back up and continue training.By the end of it, Adrian was sure he could walk into any special forces and get through their selection process easily. The training was that brutal, it was tha

  • CHAPTER 3 — THE BLACK CROSS

Adrian barely opened his eyes when the sensation of bright lights and sounds hit him all at once.Loud music boomed from speakers, and colourful lights illuminated the crowded room filled with people.Adrian groaned as he raised his hand to shield his eyes while his brain tried to process everything that had happened up to this point. All he could remember was that he was in an alleyway a few hours ago, and now he was in a bar?He immediately sat up straight on the chair he was sitting on, holding his nose to avoid the smell of alcohol and cigarettes as people were everywhere, on the dance floor, at tables, and on chairs, laughing, drinking, and having the time of their lives.Adrian was sitting at the long waiter booth area where the bartender usually mixed drinks and slid them across the table to customers. He watched the bartender mix a drink and slide a glass cup toward his direction as the cup stopped exactly in front of him.He looked at the amber-coloured liquid inside the cup
