The creature moved first.
Fast.
Much faster than something shaped like that had any right to be.
It burst from beneath the overturned bus on four limbs, claws tearing sparks from the pavement as it crossed the distance between them.
Damon stepped sideways.
Not backward.
Backward was where people fell.
The creature lunged.
He pivoted off his left foot and swung Elias’s training sword with both hands.
CLANG.
The blade struck the side of its skull.
Pain shot through Damon’s wrists.
The monster barely moved.
It turned.
Damon got his first proper look at it.
Roughly the size of a large dog.
Maybe larger.
Its body was covered in patches of dark gray hide that looked almost metallic beneath the moonlight. Its front limbs were disproportionately long, ending in three hooked claws.
No fur.
No visible ears.
Its mouth opened vertically rather than horizontally.
Four rows of short teeth unfolded inside.
Damon stared at it.
“That’s unpleasant.”
The creature screamed.
A wet, metallic sound.
Then the system finally responded.
[Identify activated.]
[Species: Ironclaw.]
[Level: 3.]
[Type: Mutated Predator.]
[Threat Evaluation: Low.]
[Known Weaknesses: Insufficient Archive Data.]
Damon’s expression changed.
“Insufficient?”
The Ironclaw charged again.
He threw himself aside.
Its claws ripped through the sleeve of his jacket.
Not deep.
Enough.
Damon hit the ground, rolled once, and came up on one knee.
Blood ran down his forearm.
Real blood.
Real pain.
That answered one question.
If he died here, there was a very good chance he stayed dead.
The Ironclaw skidded across broken asphalt.
Damon watched its feet.
Front-heavy.
Poor lateral control.
Strong skull.
Long reach.
Thin abdomen.
He had spent years studying monsters that lived in his world.
This wasn’t one of them.
That meant no diagrams.
No Hunter manuals.
No academy videos showing where to stab.
Fine.
Anatomy was still anatomy.
The creature rushed him a third time.
This time Damon waited.
Five meters.
Four.
Three.
The Ironclaw jumped.
Damon dropped.
Its body passed over him.
He drove the sword upward.
THUD.
The blunt steel caught the creature under the ribs.
Something gave.
The Ironclaw crashed onto its side.
Damon was already moving.
He threw the sword away.
His right hand went to his belt.
Knife.
The creature twisted toward him.
Too slow.
Damon stepped onto its front leg, pinned the joint beneath his boot, and drove the knife into the softer tissue behind its jaw.
The blade went in three centimeters.
Stopped.
The monster shrieked.
Its body convulsed.
Damon ripped the knife free and stabbed again.
Same point.
Then again.
The Ironclaw’s claw scraped across his side.
Fabric tore.
Damon ignored it.
Fourth strike.
The knife punched deeper.
Black blood sprayed his hand.
The creature slammed its head against his thigh.
Damon nearly fell.
He shifted his weight and drove his knee down into its neck.
Fifth strike.
The knife entered to the handle.
The Ironclaw froze.
Its claws twitched.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Damon stayed exactly where he was.
Five seconds.
Ten.
He pulled the knife free.
The monster did not move.
Only then did he step away.
His breathing was heavier than he wanted.
A thin line of blood ran down his side where one claw had grazed him.
His left forearm hurt.
His thigh would probably bruise.
But he was alive.
The Ironclaw wasn’t.
A message appeared.
[Archive Target eliminated.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Level 1 → Level 2.]
Damon stared at it.
Then another.
[Strength increased.]
[Agility increased.]
[Endurance increased.]
He blinked.
“Archivists level from combat?”
No answer.
That was definitely not normal.
Support Paths gained experience by performing tasks related to their profession.
An Archivist identified relics.
A Healer healed.
An Alchemist made potions.
Killing monsters gave some universal experience, but not enough to immediately level a civilian support Path from one kill.
Damon opened his status.
[Name: Damon Cross.]
[Level: 2.]
[Combat Path: Archivist.]
[Rank: F.]
[Strength: 13.]
[Agility: 15.]
[Endurance: 14.]
[Mana: 4.]
[Path Skills:]
[Identify Lv.1.]
Still F-Rank.
Still no combat skills.
But definitely stronger.
Damon looked down at the corpse.
The system had called it an Archive Target.
Not just a monster.
He crouched.
“Identify.”
[Ironclaw.]
[Level: 3.]
[Condition: Deceased.]
[Mutation Tier: I.]
[Extinction Status: Extinct.]
Damon’s eyes stopped at the last line.
Extinct.
Of course it was.
Everyone here was extinct.
He looked around.
The street stretched between ruined buildings.
Rusting cars.
Collapsed storefronts.
A traffic light hanging sideways from a cable.
The world was silent again.
Too silent.
No insects.
No engines.
No voices.
No distant aircraft.
Nothing.
Damon had seen abandoned districts before.
This was different.
An abandoned place still carried signs that someone would eventually return.
This place felt finished.
He stood.
The portal was gone.
That was considerably more concerning than the monster.
Damon turned in a slow circle.
“Archive.”
Nothing happened.
“Exit.”
Still nothing.
He opened his status.
No exit option.
No map.
No timer.
Only Archivist.
“That would have been useful information before I entered.”
The system remained professionally indifferent.
Damon picked up the training sword.
There was a new dent along the blade.
[Training Sword.]
[Condition: 58%.]
“Fantastic.”
His brother would have complained.
Damon almost smiled.
Then he noticed the bus.
The Ironclaw had been hiding beneath it.
Something was painted across the side.
White letters, nearly erased by rust.
WESTBRIDGE MUNICIPAL TRANSIT.
Damon froze.
He looked at the nearest building.
A pharmacy.
The name was faded.
But familiar.
MAYFIELD PHARMACY.
There was one three blocks from his apartment.
Damon slowly turned.
At the far end of the street stood a tower.
Half of it had collapsed.
But he recognized the shape.
Westbridge Central.
His city.
Damon looked up at the pale moon.
“This is Westbridge.”
[Confirmation.]
[Archive location corresponds to current geographical coordinates.]
That was worse.
Not another world.
Not exactly.
The same place.
Different history.
He walked toward an abandoned car.
The windshield was gone.
A skeleton sat behind the steering wheel.
Damon stopped beside it.
Most of the clothing had decayed.
The bones had not.
One hand still rested near the center console.
Damon hesitated.
Then activated Identify.
[Human remains.]
[Estimated time since death: 28 years.]
[Cause of death: Severe thoracic trauma.]
[Additional information available.]
Damon focused.
[Identity: Unknown.]
[Age at death: Approximately 43.]
[Mutation exposure detected: None.]
Twenty-eight years.
The extinction event had lasted thirty-one years.
That meant this person had survived for at least three years after everything began.
Maybe more.
Damon looked farther down the street.
There were more skeletons.
Some inside vehicles.
Some on sidewalks.
One beneath a collapsed street sign.
All of them had died here.
The system’s earlier message returned to mind.
[Current human population: 0.]
Not reduced.
Not endangered.
Zero.
Damon had always considered apocalypse stories unrealistic.
People were annoyingly difficult to kill.
Wars, plagues, famine.
Humanity survived.
Something had managed to erase everyone.
And he was standing in the aftermath.
A sound echoed between the buildings.
Damon immediately lowered himself behind the car.
SCRAPE.
Pause.
SCRAPE.
Something moving across concrete.
Not close.
Maybe one street over.
Damon waited.
The sound faded.
He checked his knife.
Black Ironclaw blood covered the blade.
He wiped it against the corpse’s hide.
Then stopped.
The hide.
Metallic.
Damon touched it.
[Ironclaw Hide.]
[Archive Material.]
[Durability: Moderate.]
[Current-world market data unavailable.]
Current-world.
So the system recognized a difference between what existed here and what existed outside.
Damon used the knife to cut a small section.
The blade struggled.
He eventually peeled away a palm-sized piece.
It was surprisingly light.
He put it in his jacket.
If he could return with it, he could have it analyzed.
If.
That remained a fairly important detail.
Damon looked at the ruined skyline.
Standing still wasn’t going to answer anything.
He started walking.
Twenty minutes later, Damon had learned three things.
First, this was unquestionably Westbridge.
Street names matched.
The river was in the same place.
The city center existed.
But some buildings were different.
Older construction where newer towers stood in his world.
Different businesses.
Different advertisements.
A history that had diverged before the extinction.
Second, Ironclaws were common.
He found tracks everywhere.
Claw marks.
Bones.
Dark residue.
Fortunately, he hadn’t encountered another one.
Third, whoever survived the early years had fought back.
Barricades blocked one intersection.
Cars had been welded together into a crude wall.
Gun casings covered the road.
Someone had painted a message on a building.
SAFE ZONE — NORTH.
An arrow pointed toward downtown.
Damon followed it.
Not because he expected survivors.
The system had been very clear about that.
But survivors left things behind.
Weapons.
Records.
Maps.
Answers.
Archivist might finally be useful.
The road narrowed between two apartment buildings.
Damon stopped.
Something smelled wrong.
Not rot.
Copper.
Fresh blood.
His eyes dropped.
Black droplets crossed the street.
Ironclaw blood.
Damon crouched.
Still wet.
He looked ahead.
The trail disappeared through a broken storefront.
He considered walking away.
A reasonable person would.
Unfortunately, something else caught his attention.
Footprints.
Human.
Boots.
Recent enough that dust had not settled inside them.
Damon stared.
Impossible.
[Current human population: 0.]
He touched one print.
Identify responded.
[Footprint.]
[Origin: Human-compatible anatomy.]
[Estimated age: Less than 12 hours.]
Damon’s hand remained against the floor.
“Human-compatible?”
That was a carefully chosen phrase.
He stood.
The trail led inside.
Damon tightened his grip around the sword and entered.
The storefront had once been a convenience store.
Shelves lay overturned.
The ceiling had partially collapsed.
A dark hallway extended into the back.
Black blood marked the floor.
The human-like tracks followed it.
Damon moved quietly.
One step.
Two.
He heard chewing.
Wet.
Slow.
Something cracked.
Bone.
Damon stopped near the end of the hallway.
A room opened ahead.
Moonlight entered through a hole in the ceiling.
Something crouched in the center.
Bigger than the first Ironclaw.
Much bigger.
The body was similar.
Long arms.
Metallic hide.
Vertical mouth.
But bone-like plates covered its shoulders and spine.
It was eating another Ironclaw.
Damon activated Identify.
[Ironclaw Hunter.]
[Level: 6.]
[Mutation Tier: I.]
[Threat Evaluation: Moderate.]
Damon silently backed away.
Not happening.
He had killed a Level 3 by exploiting its movement.
This one was twice the level and roughly three times the mass.
The sensible decision was obvious.
Then his heel touched something.
Click.
A glass bottle rolled across the floor.
The Ironclaw Hunter stopped chewing.
Damon looked down.
The bottle hit a wall.
Clink.
Silence.
The monster turned its head.
Six red eyes opened.
Damon sighed.
“Of course.”
The Hunter roared.
It charged.
Damon ran.
Not from fear.
From geometry.
The hallway was narrow.
The creature was wide.
That mattered.
Damon sprinted toward the entrance.
Behind him:
CRASH.
The Hunter slammed through a shelf.
Fast.
Too fast.
Damon reached the storefront.
He grabbed the metal frame of a fallen display rack as he passed.
The Hunter entered the hallway.
Damon spun.
He shoved the rack sideways.
The creature crashed through it.
Not stopped.
Slowed.
Enough.
Damon grabbed an exposed electrical cable hanging from the ceiling.
Dead.
No power.
Useless.
His eyes moved.
Gas cylinders.
Two small ones behind the counter.
Old camping fuel.
Probably empty.
Maybe not.
The Hunter tore free of the rack.
Damon kicked one cylinder across the floor.
The monster charged.
He threw his knife.
Not at the monster.
At the cylinder.
The blade struck metal.
A spark.
Nothing.
“Right.”
Terrible idea.
The Hunter was already there.
Damon raised the training sword.
The impact lifted him off his feet.
He flew backward.
Hit the counter.
Pain exploded through his ribs.
The sword left his hands.
The Hunter lunged.
Damon rolled.
Claws tore through the counter where his head had been.
He grabbed the nearest object.
A metal stool.
He smashed it into the creature’s face.
Once.
Twice.
The Hunter bit through one leg.
Damon let go.
He saw the dead Ironclaw in the back room.
Black blood.
Open throat.
A thought clicked.
Same species.
Predator.
Maybe territorial.
Maybe scent-driven.
Damon ripped the strip of Ironclaw hide from his jacket and threw it toward the opposite side of the room.
The Hunter’s head snapped toward it.
Half a second.
That was all.
Damon dove for the sword.
Grabbed it.
Turned.
The Hunter realized the trick.
Too late.
Damon drove the sword into its open mouth.
Not enough to pierce deeply.
But enough to force the jaws wider.
The monster thrashed.
Damon moved with it.
One hand held the sword.
The other reached for his knife.
Still embedded in the cylinder.
He pulled it free.
The Hunter’s claws tore across his shoulder.
Pain burned down his arm.
Damon gritted his teeth.
He stepped closer.
Inside its reach.
Knife upward.
Through the soft tissue beneath the jaw.
Once.
The monster screamed.
Damon stabbed again.
Higher.
The blade struck bone.
He changed angle.
Third stab.
Something ruptured.
The Hunter staggered.
Damon pulled the sword sideways.
Its mouth twisted.
Fourth stab.
Behind the eye.
The creature slammed him into a wall.
His vision flashed white.
He almost dropped the knife.
Almost.
Fifth.
Sixth.
The Hunter collapsed.
Damon fell with it.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Damon rolled onto his back.
His shoulder burned.
His ribs hurt.
Blood ran down his neck.
He stared at the broken ceiling above him.
“I officially hate this place.”
A message appeared.
[Archive Target eliminated.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Level 2 → Level 3.]
Damon laughed once.
Pain immediately punished him for it.
Another notification appeared.
Different.
Gold instead of blue.
[Special condition satisfied.]
Damon stopped moving.
[First mutated species eliminated.]
[Archivist Authority responding.]
The corpse beside him began to glow.
Thin strands of pale light rose from beneath its metallic hide.
Damon slowly sat up.
“What the hell?”
The strands gathered above the body.
They formed a small crystal-like shape.
Not physical.
Not entirely energy.
The system continued.
[Biological information recorded.]
[Evolutionary residue detected.]
[Archive law permits extraction.]
Then the message he had been waiting for without knowing it appeared.
[REMNANT DETECTED.]
Three options unfolded beneath it.
[Iron Tendons]
[Predatory Reflex]
[Claw Technique]
Damon stared.
His pain disappeared from his attention.
Not because it was gone.
Because something much more important had just happened.
He looked at the dead monster.
Then at the three rewards floating above it.
Archivist had no combat skills.
Apparently...
it didn’t need any.
[Select one Remnant.]
