Chapter 22
Adrian hurried down the basement stairs to his laboratory, Jake and Sean keeping pace right behind him.He went straight to the heavy storage lockers in the back and hauled out the flamethrower. Meanwhile, Jake and Sean searched the supply shelves for the extra kerosene containers Adrian had stored in the house before the collapse.A few minutes later, they returned to the living room carrying the gear.Adrian carefully checked the fuel line valves while Marcus leaned over to examine the pressure gauge.“Is it ready?” Marcus whispered, his breath barely audible.Adrian nodded once. “It should be.”He looked around at the circle of strained, nervous faces.“Remember,” Adrian said, keeping his voice to an absolute whisper. “Not a single sound. If that monster catches our vibrations, we're all dead.”Nobody replied. They didn't need to. Every person in the room understood the price of a single mistake. They kicked off their boots and shoes, stacking them silently against the wall. Adrian
Chapter 21
Everyone stumbled backward from the living room window, deep fear written across their faces. Nobody wanted to remain anywhere near the glass while that nightmare sat right outside.Except Adrian. He stood frozen beside the curtain, staring out at the Vexclaw for several quiet seconds. Its long, armored body remained perfectly still in the middle of the empty street, facing his front porch. Then he noticed something strange. Its narrow head was lowered, pressed flat against the cracked pavement.Adrian frowned and turned toward Jake.“Why is its head buried against the ground?” Adrian whispered, keeping his voice as low as possible. “It isn't looking at the house, but it's facing right toward us.”Jake took a quiet step closer, his eyes fixed on the creature.“It doesn't use its eyes to hunt,” Jake explained softly. “Its vision is almost useless. It relies entirely on its ears and vibrations. Its head is down so its auditory receptors can pick up sound waves traveling through the asph
Chapter 20
The monster slammed its heavy body against the front door again.BANG!“Hold it!” Marcus roared, his voice straining under the weight.Adrian, Sean, Jake, and the rest threw their full body weight into the barricade, fighting to keep the heavy furniture from sliding across the floorboards. Every violent impact sent a shockwave through the wood, threatening to blow the frame right out of the drywall.“It's going to break through!” Sam cried, her voice cracking with terror.“Just keep pushing!” Marcus ordered, his knuckles white against the cabinet.Another bone-shattering crash echoed through the hallway. Screams erupted as the heavy wooden cabinet lurched backward half a foot. Then, abruptly, the slamming stopped.A suffocating silence fell over the room.Everyone froze in place, muscles locked, straining to hear through the thick wood.A sharp, distant scream cut through the morning air outside, followed instantly by the creature’s horrible, metallic shriek. Heavy, multi-jointed foot
Chapter 19
Mr. Sinclair held his son's hand tightly as Adrian, Sean, and Marcus escorted them through the deserted streets. The boy was still weak, but the antidote had restored enough of his strength for him to walk on his own.“There's our house!” the boy exclaimed, pointing toward a small building at the end of the block.Relief washed over Mr. Sinclair's face. “Thank you. I don't know how I'll ever repay you for saving my son.”“You don't have to,” Adrian replied. “Just get inside and keep him safe.”After ensuring they reached their front door, Adrian watched Mr. Sinclair usher his son inside. The grateful father offered one last nod before closing and locking the door.“Finally,” Sean sighed, leaning against a rusted lamppost. “At least they're home safely.”He glanced down the empty, ruined street, his expression darkening with unease.“But doesn't this seem strange to you? Where is everybody? Even those plant monsters seem to have vanished.”Marcus adjusted the heavy strap of his rifle.
Chapter 18
Leah paced nervously across the living room while Sam repeatedly tried to hail Adrian and Sean on the walkie-talkie.“Why aren't they answering?” Leah asked, her voice tight with rising panic. “They should have checked in by now.”Sam clicked the transmission button again, but only harsh static hissed back at her.“Nothing,” she muttered, frustration mixing with cold dread.“What if something happened to them?” Jake asked quietly from the corner.“Don't say that!” Leah snapped, though her wide, terrified eyes betrayed her own fears.Sam lifted the radio once more. “Adrian, Sean, can you hear me? Please respond.”Silence.Suddenly, a massive, deafening pounding shook the front door. All three teenagers froze in their tracks.Another violent blow followed instantly, rattling the heavy door hard against its frame.Jake slowly turned toward the entryway, his muscles locking. “What was that?”They exchanged terrified glances before Leah took a cautious step forward.“Maybe it's Adrian and
Chapter 17
The machine continued to beep violently, its high-pitched alarm filling the ward. Adrian stared at the glowing monitor, trying to make sense of the erratic numbers and flashing red lines, but the data meant nothing to him.“What's wrong with him?” Mr. Sinclair demanded, his voice cracking as he gripped his son's pale hand. “Why is the machine doing that?”“Please, give me some space!” the nurse urged, checking the boy's pulse before pressing her stethoscope against his chest. Her expression tightened with deep worry. “Come on, sweetheart. Stay with me.”Sean stood frozen beside Adrian, his eyes darting between the nurse and the motionless child. “Adrian, is it the antidote? Did it do something to him?”“I don't know!” Adrian snapped, his voice betraying his mounting panic. He leaned closer to the bed, searching the boy's face for any sign of improvement or decline. The green discoloration still stained his skin, but the situation had shifted into a chaotic emergency, and Adrian couldn
