The world was nothing but fire inside Kai’s body.
His veins burned, and every breath was a blade scraping through his lungs.
He fell to his knees, clutching his chest really hard. His screams muffled against the dark silence of the forbidden Ancestral Trial Grounds.
“System Notification: Initiating Core Fusion. Warning: Host meridians incompatible. Structural collapse imminent.”
The golden text burned itself into his vision, but Kai could barely read through due to the intense agony. His body twisted unnaturally. He could feel his bones popping and realigning with blood spilling from his nose and mouth.
“Ahhh…!” His voice echoed across the cavern walls.
For years, they had called him trash. For years, the whispers had covered his steps, suffocating him like chains he could never break. And now, those chains have broken with fire and fury.
The Martial Core’s power surged through him and his body convulsed as the fragments of energy sought paths where none existed.
His vision blurred. A faint memory surfaced. His father’s calloused hand resting on his shoulder and a gentle voice saying, “You will not always be weak, Kai. Even broken chains can be reforged into weapons.”
The words were clear in his mind.
“Then forge me now!” Kai roared in a hoarse voice with blood. “I will not die here! Not as trash, never again!”
The tablet flared in response, divine chains bursted into threads of light that pierced his skin.
“System Notification: Beginning Reconstitution of Meridians.”
Golden fire seared through his broken pathways, knitting them together. Pain became thunder. His bones vibrated. His heart hammered so hard he thought it might explode.
The energy that once tore him apart now began to circulate through him.
Kai gasped for air as power coursed through him. His vision cleared, and he felt it hum of something alive within him.
Floating above his dantian, a faint fire flickered to life. That was his Martial Spirit.
Tears stung his eyes not of weakness, because he had never dared to dream this day would come. That he, the boy branded useless, would awaken what even geniuses bled years for.
The cavern vibrated as the chains of light retracting into silence. Kai fell forward, gasping as every of his muscle trembled with exhaustion.
“System Notification: Broken Meridians Repaired. Martial Spirit Awakened.
System Notification: First Quest Completed – Break Free From Mortality.
Reward: +10 Vitality. Basic Martial Arts Manual (Unsealed).”
The words etched themselves into his vision. For the first time.
Kai sighed, weakly at first, then louder. His voice broke into the cavernous silence. “I… I did it. I’m not trash anymore.”
His body collapsed onto the cold stone with sweat soaking his tattered robe. His chest rose and fell.
……….
Meanwhile, across the Azure Cloud Sect…
Elder Zhao Tianren sat in quiet meditation. His hands clasped as spiritual energy flowed around him like a mist. His cultivation chamber glowed with quiet power until a sudden shiver ran through the air.
He opened his eyes sharply.
There came a heavy ripple. He could feel a fluctuation of energy that was so subtle, yet so… impossible. His pupils narrowed. He recognized it instantly, because he had stood guard over those grounds for decades.
“The Ancestral Tablet…” Zhao whispered in a low and dangerous voice.
He stood while his robes whispered against the floor. His face twisted into a grimace. “That boy… Kai Lin. I sent him there to rot, to vanish as he should. How could this fluctuation be him?” He muttered silently.
His hands clenched behind his back, and his veins bulging.
“Trash does not rise,” Zhao muttered, though unease gnawed at the edge of his certainty. He remembered the boy's father, Lin Feng. He was the man who had defied him and had vanished under mysterious circumstances. A shadow flickered through Zhao’s mind, it was an old secret he had buried deep.
If the boy had truly touched the tablet…
Zhao’s eyes narrowed into slits, now sharp as blades. “That trash… impossible. Did he touch the tablet?”
The chamber filled with silence, but Zhao’s killing intent seeped into the air like poison.
“If the impossible had indeed happened, then Kai Lin is no longer just a useless pest. He is now a threat. And threats… must be crushed before they can take root.”
Back in the Trial Grounds, Kai lay on the cold stone, his breathing ragged, but a faint smile etched across his face.
His body was still weak, but within, he felt the flow of energy. For the first time in his sixteen years, the future wasn’t a locked gate anymore. It was a door he had broken open himself.
His eyes closed in exhaustion, but his hand gripped the stone floor with determination.
“No more chains,” he whispered.
………….
…….
………….
The next day, the morning sun was bright across the Azure Cloud Sect’s training field. It casted long shadows over the rows of outer disciples standing in formation. The clang of wooden swords and the crack of fists against stone echoed across the field. Yet, as always, whispers rose whenever Kai Lin stepped onto the grounds.
“Look, the cripple’s here again.”
“He still dares to show his face? Trash really doesn’t know shame.”
“It doesn’t matter. Watching him get beaten is entertainment.”
The taunts slid across the air like knives. Kai had grown used to it, but today, something burned behind his calm expression. He tightened his fists, though he kept his head lowered, letting his messy hair cover his eyes.
The jeers grew louder when Li Shen. The tall and arrogant boy in his azure training robes, walked across the grounds with his guards. His lips curved into a sneer as he stopped directly in front of Kai.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Azure Cloud’s shame.” Li Shen’s voice was deliberately loud enough for Elder Zhao Tianren who sat coldly overseeing the training from the stone pavilion to hear. “Still dragging your broken body here every day? Shouldn’t you just give up and save us all from having to look at you?”
Laughter erupted among the disciples.
Kai remained silent.
The silence only fueled Li Shen’s arrogance. He leaned closer. His breath was hot with disdain. “Or perhaps you enjoy being a clown all along? Trash like you exists to amuse others, after all.”
A chorus of chuckles from other disciples followed. Kai’s nails dug into his palms. He remembered the night in the forbidden grounds, the tablet, the voice, the burning agony, and finally…the awakening.
He inhaled slowly.
Elder Zhao’s sharp clap silenced the field. “Enough. Begin the cultivation progress test

The war started before morning. The enemy had regrouped overnight and returned stronger. They pushed hard against Azure Cloud’s middle defense line. Kai stood at the front. Their cultivators are using formation amplifiers to break through.”“I see it,” Kai said as the System highlighted the advancing enemy units in red. “We end this before they can stabilize.”The System chimed again. “Energy levels within host fluctuating.
