Chapter 1: The Weight of a Soul
The dust in Jakarta didn’t just coat the air, it tasted like pulverized history. Diego pushed against the jagged slab of concrete, his shoulder screaming in protest as he shoved the debris aside. Sunlight, harsh and unfiltered, sliced through the gaps in the collapsed basement ceiling, blinding him for a long, agonizing second.
"Ugh, damn it," Diego muttered, his voice rasping like sandpaper against the stillness. "Everything hurts. My head feels like it’s been put through a meat grinder."
He crawled out, his boots crunching on shards of glass and twisted rebar. The skyline—or what remained of it—looked like a jagged mouth full of broken teeth. The grand towers of Sudirman were nothing but skeletal frames draped in gray ash. He wiped the grime from his face, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"Hey, anyone there? Is this thing even on?" he whispered to the empty air, then shook his head. "Stupid. Of course, no one’s there. You’re alone, Diego. You’re really alone."
He stumbled into what used to be a bustling street, now just a canyon of ruin. He needed water. He needed to find out why the silence felt so heavy, so final. As he walked, his vision flickered, a strange, static-filled translucent blue pane flashing before his eyes.
System Initializing... Soul Ledger Synchronized.
Host: Diego.
Current Status: Equilibrium.
"What the hell is that?" Diego backed away, tripping over a discarded piece of plastic. "Am I hallucinating? Is this the radiation finally kicking in?"
He blinked, rubbing his eyes, but the text remained burned into his retinas. Beside it, a set of numbers hovered in the air: `0`.
"Okay, breathe," he told himself, leaning against a rusted lamppost. "Deep breaths. Maybe I’m just dehydrated. Or maybe I hit my head way harder than I thought."
He looked toward the end of the block. A group of men moved through the debris—scavengers. They looked ragged, their clothes stained with the grime of the city. Diego flattened himself against a wall, his breath hitching.
"See anything worth taking, Rian?" one of the men asked, his voice rough.
"Just scrap," the one called Rian replied, kicking a pile of rubble. "The good stuff was looted months ago. This place is a tomb."
"Yeah, well, keep looking. We don’t go back empty-handed. Not again."
Diego watched them, his stomach knotting. He tried to turn away, but as his eyes landed on Rian, the blue text flickered again. Floating above the scavenger’s head, glowing in an eerie crimson hue, was a number: `450`.
"Wait, what is that?" Diego whispered.
"Did you hear something?" Rian froze, his head snapping toward Diego’s hiding spot.
Diego pressed his palm against his mouth, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm. "Quiet. Just stay quiet," he hissed to himself.
"Probably just a rat," the other scavenger said, yawning. "This whole place is infested. Let’s keep moving toward the old market district."
Diego slumped back as they moved on, but his gaze lingered on them. The numbers above Rian shifted, the `450` pulsating like a dying heart. He looked at the other scavengers—one had `120`, another `85`.
"Numbers? Are these… debt? Soul debt?" Diego’s mind raced. He had read enough fiction, seen enough bizarre things lately, but this felt visceral. This felt like a ledger of sins.
He crept forward, keeping a safe distance, driven by a morbid curiosity he couldn't suppress. He followed them to a small, makeshift clearing near a hollowed-out convenience store. There, a lone wanderer stood, looking confused and lost.
"Hey, you," Rian called out, his voice turning oily. "You lost, buddy?"
The wanderer looked up, startled. "I... I’m just looking for supplies. Please, I don't want any trouble."
"Trouble?" Rian laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. "We aren't here for trouble. We’re here for a transaction."
Without warning, Rian pulled a jagged metal pipe from his pack. The move was fluid, practiced. He swung with sickening force, striking the man in the temple. The wanderer crumpled instantly, hitting the pavement with a dull, final thud.
Diego gasped, his hand flying to his throat. He just… he just ended him.
As the man fell, the numbers above Rian’s head spiked. `450` vanished, replaced by a jagged, shifting `750`. The crimson glow intensified, casting a bloody light on the scavenger’s cruel, grinning face.
"That was easy," Rian said, wiping his pipe on the victim's jacket. "That’s another debt paid, right?"
"Yeah," his companion sneered, stepping over the body to rifle through the victim's pockets. "You’re really racking them up today, man."
Diego’s world spun. The permanence of it—the cold, clinical nature of the murder—sent a shiver down his spine that settled deep in his marrow. He wasn't just observing a system; he was observing a moral barometer of a dying world.
"I have to get out of here," Diego whispered, his legs shaking. "If that number is what I think it is, that guy is walking a line I don’t want to cross."
He started to back away, careful not to disturb the piles of debris. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to flee the sight of the body and the monsters standing over it. But just as he turned to slip into the shadows of an alleyway, he bumped into someone.
He spun around, prepared to apologize, to beg, to run—anything.
Standing there was a woman, her clothes torn and gray, her face smudged with soot. She looked exhausted, her eyes dull and hollow. She didn't have a weapon. She didn't look like a scavenger. But when Diego looked up, his breath left him entirely.
Hovering above her head, in a color he hadn't seen before—a freezing, abyssal black—was a number: `-50`.
"Are you... okay?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Diego stared at the black numbers. The system flickered, a new notification sliding into his vision.
Negative Balance Detected. Hostile Influence Imminent.
Diego looked at her, really looked at her, and realized that while Rian’s crime was loud and violent, this woman’s presence felt like a void—an empty space in the universe where everything else was being pulled in.
"I'm fine," Diego managed, though his voice sounded like it belonged to someone else. "I'm just... lost."
"Lost," she repeated, a ghost of a sad smile touching her lips. "Aren't we all? Come on. If you stay here, those men will find you. And they aren't looking for friends."
She turned, her movements strangely silent, like a shadow drifting across a wall. Diego stood paralyzed for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black numbers floating above her.
"Hey," he called out, his voice cracking. "Wait! Who are you?"
She stopped, looking back over her shoulder. The black numbers didn't move; they remained anchored to the air above her, a stark contrast to the ruined world around them.
"I'm just someone who knows how to survive," she said, her eyes piercing him. "Are you coming, or do you want to join that man on the ground?"
Diego looked back at Rian, who was still laughing as he searched the body. He looked at the woman with the void above her head. He had no choice. He had no supplies, no weapon, and no idea what he was.
"I'm coming," Diego said, stepping forward. "Lead the way."
As he followed her into the dark, winding guts of the ruined city, Diego felt the System chime softly in his mind.
New Quest Initiated: Survive the Ledger.
He didn't know what it meant, but as the screams of the scavengers faded into the distance, he realized one thing: the world had changed, the rules were gone, and the only thing that mattered now was the debt he was about to incur.

The Apocalypse Where Everyone Has One Life Chapter 8: The Harvest Begins
The Auditor’s blade of pure light sliced through the space where Diego had been a millisecond before. He hit the ground, rolling over jagged concrete, the Soul Fragment at his hip throbbing with a frantic, rhythmic heat."Diego, move!" Beatriz screamed, vaulting over the Auditor’s back, her blade carving a trail of sparks against its translucent armor. "It's adapting to our movements! Don't let it anchor you!"Diego scrambled up, his breath hitching as the golden text in his vision blurred into a frantic mess. "It’s not just attacking! It’s rewriting the room! Look at the walls!"The skeletal transit hub was twisting. The rebar was curling like fingers toward them, and the very air seemed to be hardening into glass."I see it!" Beatriz yelled, her voice straining as she parried a strike that sent her skidding backward. "The 'Harvest'—the Ledger is liquidating everything here! We’re being scrubbed!""Then we need

The Apocalypse Where Everyone Has One Life Chapter 7: Into the Dead Zone
The obsidian plateau fell away, replaced by the twisted, skeletal remains of a transit hub that looked like a birdcage for giants. The air here was heavy, shimmering with a sickly, iridescent haze that tasted like burnt plastic and old ozone."Stay close," Beatriz said, her voice tight. "The toxicity levels are spiking. Keep that respirator over your nose."Diego adjusted the makeshift filter he’d pulled from Marcus’s pack. It was a crude thing, smelling of sweat and chemical runoff, but it was better than the alternative. "How much further to the Threshold?"Beatriz didn't look back. She climbed over a heap of rusted girders, her boots making almost no sound. "Miles. And we’re entering the 'Nest Zone.' Keep your head down and your eyes off the sky.""Why? What’s in the sky?""Things that track movement by the Ledger’s frequency," she said. "You’re already radiating that Soul Fragment like a neon sign. If you loo

The Apocalypse Where Everyone Has One Life Chapter 6: The Price of Survival
The gunfire roared, a jagged, discordant symphony that echoed across the obsidian plateau. Diego dove behind a crystalline outcropping just as a bullet sparked against the stone near his ear. His heart wasn't just pounding; it was a rhythmic, pulsing demand for survival.“They’re flanking us!” Beatriz screamed, her voice cutting through the ringing in his ears. She slid into position beside him, her blade held low. “Marcus isn't just sending men, Diego. Look at their eyes!”Diego squinted, forcing his focus onto the three scavengers advancing in a pincer movement. The System flickered, struggling to render the data amidst the chaos. He locked onto the nearest man.“What are you talking about?” Diego gasped, grabbing a shard of black rock as a makeshift weapon.“Look!” Beatriz gestured toward the scavengers. “They aren't blinking. They aren't even breathing in sync. They’re being puppeteered

The Apocalypse Where Everyone Has One Life Chapter 5: The Debt of the Scavengers
The obsidian plateau stretched out like an endless, frozen sea under the bruised, violet sky. Diego’s lungs burned, each breath feeling like he was inhaling needles, but he didn't stop. Beside him, Beatriz moved with the silent, predatory efficiency of a shadow, her hand never leaving the hilt of her blade. They huddled behind a jagged spire of black rock, the only cover for miles. In the distance, the Threshold hummed, a low-frequency vibration that rattled Diego’s teeth."You hear that?" Beatriz whispered, her eyes fixed on the horizon."Hear what?" Diego leaned in, straining his ears."Movement. Not the wind. Heavy boots on stone."Diego focused. The System flickered—Equilibrium—and then, a faint, rhythmic crunching sound cut through the oppressive silence."They’re close," Diego murmured, his heart hammering against his ribs."Keep your voice down," Beatriz hissed, shifting her weight. "If th
