The throne room had transformed in the hour Kael had been waiting. What was once an empty, echoing chamber now thrummed with life and anticipation. Guild members from across the kingdom filled the space, warriors in polished armour, mages in flowing robes, scouts in leather gear that bore the marks of countless journeys.

They stood in organised rows, their faces turned expectantly toward the grand entrance where the monarchs would appear.

Kael stood among them now, positioned near the front with the other inductees. His heart hammered against his ribs like a caged bird desperate for freedom. He wiped his sweaty palms against his ceremonial tunic, the formal attire that had been delivered to his quarters that morning, deep blue with silver threading that caught the light.

Guild Master Torin stood at the base of the dais, his weathered face impassive as always. Marcus Valen was positioned to his right, the Elite Squad captain's red hair like a flame in the afternoon light streaming through the windows.

And there, just a few rows back, was Lyanna. She caught his eye and gave him a small, encouraging smile that made his chest swell with warmth.

Everything was perfect.

A door opened at the far end of the chamber, not the main entrance, but a side door that led to the royal herald's station. An elderly man in royal livery stepped through, carrying a long brass trumpet adorned with the kingdom's crest.

He raised the instrument to his lips, his chest expanding with a deep breath.

The first note rang out, clear and pure and commanding. It echoed off the stone walls, filling every corner of the vast room. Three more notes followed in quick succession, the traditional fanfare that announced the arrival of royalty.

The sound seemed to vibrate in Kael's bones, making his pulse quicken even more.

As the final note faded, the herald lowered his trumpet and called out in a voice that somehow carried without shouting:

"All rise for Their Majesties, King Aldric Thornhaven and Queen Seraphine Thornhaven, sovereign rulers of the realm, protectors of the kingdom, and bearers of the ancient flame!"

The massive double doors at the throne room's main entrance swung open with a resonant boom that made several people jump. The doors were heavy oak reinforced with iron, and they moved with theatrical slowness, revealing the corridor beyond inch by inch.

King Aldric appeared first, and the sight of him stole Kael's breath as it always did. His father, the king, was magnificent in his formal regalia. His robes were deep crimson edged with gold thread that seemed to glow in the light.

The ceremonial crown sat upon his head, not the simple circlet he wore for daily business but the full crown of state, heavy with jewels and history.

His ice-blue eyes swept across the assembled crowd with the confidence of a man who had never doubted his right to rule.

Queen Seraphine followed one step behind, as tradition dictated. She was breathtaking in a gown of deep purple that brought out the violet in her eyes, those eyes that Kael had inherited, though he'd never understood why he was shown as grey in mirrors.

Her golden hair was swept up in an elaborate style, woven with pearls and small diamonds that sparkled with her every movement. But there was something about her expression, something tight around her eyes and mouth that suggested…What? Pain? Sorrow?

No, Kael shook off the thought. It was just nerves. His mother had always been sensitive during important ceremonies.

The moment the king and queen fully entered the throne room, a sound like rustling leaves filled the chamber as every single person dropped into a deep bow.

Guild masters who commanded hundreds of warriors, veteran soldiers who'd faced death countless times, powerful mages who could reshape reality with a word, all bent at the waist in perfect synchronisation, their heads lowered in respect and submission.

Kael bowed with them, his eyes fixed on the polished floor, his heart thundering. He could hear his parents' footsteps as they crossed the chamber, the king's boots firm and measured, the queen's softer but no less deliberate.

The sound seemed to take forever, each step an eternity, until finally the footsteps stopped.

"You may rise."

King Aldric's voice rang out, deep and commanding.

The assembly straightened as one. Kael lifted his head to see his parents ascending the dais, moving with practised grace. King Aldric reached his throne first, an enormous chair carved from dark wood, its high back inlaid with gold and precious stones.

He turned, his robes swirling around him, and settled onto the seat with the casual authority of a man who'd done it ten thousand times.

Queen Seraphine took her position in the slightly smaller throne beside him. Where the king's throne spoke of power and dominance, the queen whispered of grace and wisdom. She arranged her skirts carefully, her movements precise and controlled, before placing her hands demurely in her lap. But Kael noticed how tightly her fingers were laced together, knuckles white with tension.

"Be seated"

The king commanded.

Another rustling sound as the assembly lowered themselves onto the benches that had been arranged throughout the throne room.

Kael remained standing, the inductees always stood for the first portion of the ceremony, but everyone else sat, the room settling into an expectant silence.

King Aldric allowed the quiet to stretch, his gaze moving slowly across the assembled crowd.

It was a technique Kael had seen him use before, building anticipation, ensuring every eye was focused on him before he spoke. Finally, after what felt like an hour but was probably only thirty seconds, the king rose from his throne.

The movement was fluid, powerful. Even though he'd just sat down, the standing back up felt significant, intentional. He spread his arms wide in a gesture that seemed to embrace the entire room.

"My friends."

He began, his voice warm now and less formal.

"My loyal subjects, my trusted warriors, my brothers and sisters in arms."

He paused, letting each phrase sink in…

Unknown to them was the danger that was awaiting them. They were too engrossed in false celebrations and had turned their backs on justice. No one was asking about what happened at the void a few days ago simply because they weren't affected by the corruption in the city, which had crept down to every nook and cranny of the place, moving down to every heart and being passed on from generation to generation. Lady Morrigan and Duke Severin were supposed to be part of the nobles in attendance at this event but couldn't as they had declared war through Kael anonymously on the capital. However, the view was ecstatic and foods and drinks were passed round children women men servants animals they were all rejoicing as everything was in plenty just the same corruption and evil were in excess.
