“Your parents will be glad you died.” The words carved deeper than claws as Kael Ashford lay bleeding out, abandoned by his guild squad and by Lyanna, the woman he loved. She turned back once, smiled, and said. “Die well, darling.” Monsters feasted slowly, savoring his screams. His parents were long dead… weren’t they? Yet that final taunt gnawed at him even as darkness claimed his life. Then the light returned. A fallen goddess, the infamous Whore Spirit, offered him a second chance. “Child of sorcerers.” She whispered. “Be reborn. Learn why a king and queen sentenced their own son to death… and make them choke on every breath since.” Eighteen years later, Kael awakens in a new body: eldest son of the feared Duskborne family, masters of shadow magic and blood sorcery. His betrayers still live, laughing about the weakling they fed to beasts. They have no idea some deaths refuse to stay buried. Vengeance burns coldest when it has waited two lifetimes. Will Kael unearth the royal secret that doomed him? Will he shatter the comrades who smiled as he died? And what forbidden power stirs in his veins, hungry to be unleashed? In a world where loyalty is an illusion and love is a blade, revenge is the only truth left.

CHAPTER 1

The morning sun pierced through the training ground's canopy, casting dancing shadows across the dirt arena where steel met steel in a symphony of clashing blades. Sweat dripped down Kael Ashford's face, stinging his gray eyes as he circled his opponent with careful, measured steps.

Master Rendall, the guild's veteran sword instructor, moved like water and was infinitely patient. His weathered face bore the scars of a thousand battles and his dark eyes tracked Kael's every movement with the precision of a predator sizing up prey.

"Your footwork is sloppy, boy!"

Rendall barked, lunging forward with a strike aimed at Kael's left shoulder.

Kael parried, the impact reverberating up his arm and making his muscles scream in protest. He'd been training for three hours straight, and exhaustion was beginning to cloud his judgment. But he couldn't stop now. Not when he was so close.

"Again!"

Rendall commanded, pressing his advantage with a series of rapid strikes, high, low and middle, each one designed to exploit a different weakness in Kael's defense.

Kael backpedaled, his blade moving on pure instinct, deflecting each blow by mere inches. His breath came in ragged gasps, his arms felt like lead weights, but his mind remained sharp, cataloging every pattern, every tell in Rendall's movements.

There!

The master instructor had a habit, barely noticeable but there nonetheless,of tensing his right shoulder a fraction of a second before committing to a power strike. It was the opening Kael had been waiting for.

Rendall came at him again, and Kael saw the shoulder twitch. Instead of retreating, he stepped into the attack, angling his body to let the blade whistle past his ribs by a hair's breadth.

The move was reckless, dangerous, and utterly unexpected.

Rendall's eyes widened as Kael's blade swept upward in a tight arc, catching the master's sword near the hilt. Kael twisted his wrist with all the strength he had left, leveraging his entire body weight into the motion.

The technique was one Rendall himself had taught him weeks ago: use your opponent's momentum against them.

Metal screeched against metal. Rendall's grip, compromised by the angle and force of Kael's counter, failed. His sword flew from his hands, spinning through the air before embedding itself point-first in the dirt several feet away.

Time seemed to freeze.

Kael stood there, chest heaving, his training blade pressed against Rendall's now-exposed chest. For a heartbeat, neither man moved. Then Kael's lips curved into a tired but triumphant smile.

"You lose."

 Kael said between ragged breaths.

"And I win."

Rendall's hands slowly rose in surrender, palms open and fingers spread. The gesture was universal among warriors: I yield.

His weathered face remained impassive for a long moment, stern and unreadable. Then, like the sun breaking through storm clouds, a broad smile split his scarred features.

"Very good, lad."

Rendall lowered his hands and clapped Kael firmly on the shoulder, the impact nearly buckling the younger man's knees.

"Very good indeed. You're getting pretty damn good. That disarm was textbook perfect, better than textbook, actually. You adapted it on the fly."

Kael lowered his blade, relief and pride washing over him in equal measure. He'd been trying to best Master Rendall for months, and each attempt had ended with him flat on his back in the dirt. But not today. Today he'd finally done it.

"You know."

Rendall continued, walking over to retrieve his sword from the ground.

“You keep improving at this rate, and you'll surpass me within the year."

He pulled his blade free and examined it critically before sliding it into its sheath.

"Hell, you might even surpass the captain of our guild. Marcus is skilled, no doubt, but he relies too much on brute strength. You've got something he doesn't,adaptability."

Kael's breath caught in his throat. His hands trembled slightly as he wiped sweat from his brow.

"Wait..."

His voice came out barely above a whisper.

"You said 'our guild.' Does that mean…"

Rendall's smile widened, showing teeth.

"Aye, lad. You made it in. Your father approved it this morning. You're officially a member of the Royal Guild's Elite Squad."

The words hit Kael like a physical blow. For a moment, he simply stood there, unable to process what he'd just heard.

The Elite Squad. The most prestigious, most selective unit in the entire kingdom. Warriors are chosen not just for their skill but for their loyalty, their courage, their potential to become legends.

And he was one of them.

"I…I made it?"

Kael stammered, his gray eyes wide with disbelief.

"I actually made it?"

"You actually made it."

Rendall confirmed with a laugh.

"Now get out of here before I change my mind and make you run drills until sunset."

Kael didn't need to be told twice. Pure, unbridled joy exploded in his chest like wildfire. He dropped his training sword without a second thought, letting it clatter to the ground and spun on his heel.

His eyes immediately found her across the training ground.

Lyanna.

She was sitting on a bench in the shade, her golden hair catching the sunlight and making it look like spun gold. She'd been watching his training session, as she often did, and her sky-blue eyes met him with a question in them.

Kael ran, his legs, which moments ago had felt like lead, suddenly found new strength. He sprinted across the training ground, his boots kicking up small clouds of dust with each step. Other trainees dove out of his way, shouting in surprise and annoyance, but Kael barely registered them.

Lyanna stood as he approached, confusion and amusement dancing across her beautiful features.

"Kael, what…”

He didn't let her finish. The moment he reached her, he grabbed her by the waist, lifted her off her feet, and kissed her.

The world disappeared. There was no training ground, no watching eyes, no kingdom with its politics and prophecies.

There was only her,the softness of her lips, the surprised gasp she made before melting into the kiss, the way her arms wrapped around his neck and held him like she'd never let go.

When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Lyanna's cheeks were flushed pink. Her eyes sparkled with a mixture of surprise and something else, something Kael's lovesick mind interpreted as joy.

"You're so happy."

She said, her fingers playing with the hair at the nape of his neck.

"What is it, my darling? What happened?"

Kael couldn't stop grinning. His heart felt like it might burst from his chest.

"Father approved it! I'm in the Elite Squad! I'm going to be in the same squad as you!"

Lyanna's eyes widened, and for a fraction of a second, something flickered across her face, something too quick for Kael to identify. Then her expression smoothed into a radiant smile that made his heart skip a beat.

"Oh, really?"

Her voice was warm honey, sweet and smooth.

"That's wonderful, Kael! I'm so proud of you!"

"Yes!"

Kael set her down but kept his arms around her waist, unable to stop touching her, needing the physical contact to confirm this wasn't a dream.

"We're going to be together all the time now! Training together, going on missions together,no more being separated for weeks on end!"

His excitement made the words tumble out faster and faster.

"I can finally prove to everyone that I'm not just some weak noble's son. I can show them I'm worthy of being by your side!"

Lyanna's smile never wavered, but her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly on his shoulders.

"You've always been worthy, darling. Always."

"I have to go."

Kael said suddenly, reluctantly pulling away from her embrace.

"I need to see Father and Mother. I need to thank them properly for this. For believing in me."

He pressed one more quick kiss to her forehead.

"Wait for me? We can celebrate together tonight!"

"Of course."

Lyanna's hand trailed down his arm as he stepped back, her fingers lingering on his wrist before finally letting go.

"I'll be here. Go. Your parents are waiting."

Kael flashed her one more brilliant smile before turning and sprinting toward the castle proper. He didn't see the way Lyanna's smile vanished the moment his back was turned.

He didn't see how her eyes, those beautiful sky-blue eyes he loved so much, went cold and calculating as she watched him run away.

She turned slowly, her gaze finding Master Rendall across the training ground. The instructor had been watching the entire exchange and now his weathered face was carefully neutral.

Their eyes met.

"So."

Lyanna said quietly, her voice carrying across the distance between them despite its softness.

 "It's finally time?...”
