Chapter 3: The Boss's Room

"Ugh… u, ugh…"

I was walking through the dungeon, on the verge of tears.

Just a moment ago, I'd been chased by a wolf, and I'd only just managed to shake it off.

There was a good reason why someone like me, who couldn't even defeat monsters, had come all the way to this dungeon.

Normally, adventurers make their money by defeating monsters. Slaying them causes them to drop valuable items, which can then be sold for cash.

So, how do I—someone who can't defeat monsters—plan to make money? Well, although it's rare, treasure chests can sometimes be found scattered throughout dungeons.

The items inside these treasure chests are valuable, so selling them can net you a decent amount of money.

That's right. I'm exploring the dungeon while searching for treasure chests.

"But I can't find any at all…"

I muttered to myself.

Treasure chests are extremely rare here.

Besides, it's said that the chances of finding one in this Fassil Dungeon are practically zero.

Since so many adventurers come and go through this dungeon, it's assumed that any treasure chests lying along the way have already been taken.

If I went into a slightly harder dungeon, my chances of finding a treasure chest would probably be higher, but if I ventured into a dungeon any harder than this, I'd likely just end up getting killed by monsters.

Since this dungeon only has wolves, I've been able to keep exploring while constantly running away.

If I die, my little sister who's lying in a coma will die as well. I'm the only one who can take care of her and keep her alive. That's why death simply isn't an option for me.

That's why I can't take any risks.

"But that doesn't mean I shouldn't find anything at all, does it?!?"

In the end, I found nothing, so I cried.

As for where I am, I've actually made it all the way to the entrance of the boss's room.

"After working so hard to get this far…"

Along the way, I encountered countless wolves, but I managed to escape from all of them.

And yet, I still couldn't find a single treasure chest.

"Damn it."

"I don't even have anything to eat today. What am I going to do…"

I crouched down right there and started crying.

There's no way I can go into the boss's room.

If I go in, I won't be allowed to leave until I defeat the boss. That's the rule of the dungeon.

For someone like me, with no way to fight, going in would be suicide...

"I guess I have no choice. I'll just go back the way I came."

I'd made it this far unscathed.

I guess getting out of the Fassil Dungeon shouldn't be that difficult.

"Woooooof!"

"What the f*..."

A wolf's howl echoed from deep within.

The wolf had probably made its way to where I was.

Still, I didn't feel threatened.

I just had to run away like I had been doing all along.

"Woooooof!" "Woooooof!" "Woooooof!" "Woooooof!" "Woooooo!" "Woooooon!"

"N-no way!? Oh my god…"

Multiple wolves were howling as if in unison.

By the time I realized it, it was already too late.

Dozens of wolves, as if they'd formed a pack, were swarming toward me.

Could they have actually followed me all the way here…?!

"Waaaaah, what am I going to do…!?"

It's true I had encountered plenty of wolves on my way here, but I'd escaped every single one of them. I was absolutely sure I'd lost them all!

I never imagined that every single wolf I'd encountered so far had been relentlessly chasing after me!

Presumably, countless wolves are on their way here.

"Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!"

Before I knew it, a huge pack of wolves was crammed together, blocking my escape route.

Right behind me, the door leading to the boss's room was blocking my only way out.

"Ah, ah… aww."

"Ggyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!"

As if in perfect unison, the wolves pounced on me all at once.

I'm dead.

I'm definitely dead.

For a split second, that premonition flashed through my mind.

No, I can't die!!!

I have a little sister I have to take care of!!!

"〈Evasion〉!"

I screamed so hard I thought my throat would burst.

And then, I activated my only skill—and my weakest one at that.

In that instant, my body began moving on its own, trying to dodge the attacks from the wolves closing in from all directions.

The 〈Evasion〉 skill automatically performs the best possible action to avoid attacks. As a bonus, it also temporarily boosts my movement speed, albeit only for an instant.

The decision "〈Evasion〉" made to save me from this life-or-death crisis…

…was incredibly anticlimactic.

The result was that my body simply stepped straight back.

It seems "〈Evasion〉" didn't take into account that the boss was waiting right behind me.

"So it really is the weakest skill, isn't it… aghaaaa!!"

I couldn't help but scream.

The door had already closed, trapping me inside the boss's room.

Since the monsters I encountered along the way don't enter the boss's room, that meant I'd managed to dodge the wolves' attacks.

"Gwoooooooooooah!!"

A roar echoed from directly behind me.

There, the boss of the Fassil Dungeon was waiting for me.

A werewolf.

Its massive body, over two meters tall, loomed over me.

Unless I could defeat this boss, there was no way I could get out of this room.

For someone like me, who had no way to fight back, this was nothing short of a desperate situation.

"No wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!"

My scream echoed through the room.

  • Chapter 10: Obtaining The 〈Book Of Mastery〉!

As usual, the reward area contained a teleportation circle for leaving the dungeon and a treasure chest. «"I seriously don't feel like I made it out alive..."» The moment I reached the reward area, I dropped heavily onto the floor. If I'd failed to lure the Black Orc's attack properly, if I'd misjudged the angle I was sent flying, if I'd mistimed 〈Evasion〉... any one of those mistakes would have cost me my life. It's honestly amazing that I managed to pull it off without making a single mistake. Even so... It was worth going through all of that. Thinking that, I reached out and placed my hand on the treasure chest. «"So this is the Spiral Dungeon's first-clear reward..."» Inside was a single book. I already knew its effect from my research, but I checked its status just to be sure. ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ 〈Book of Mastery〉 Raises the user's highest stat by 10. (Applies to the entire party.) (Cannot be traded.) ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ ◇ Yep. Just as I'd researched. The 〈Book of Mastery〉 was

The Pylar Dungeon. The recommended standard for clearing it was six level 25 adventurers—an E-class dungeon. And here I was, a level 1 adventurer, about to challenge it solo. Inside, the dim corridors twisted like a maze. With the map memorized perfectly in my head, I advanced without hesitation. My goal, of course, was the first-clear reward obtained after defeating the dungeon boss. Naturally, I wasn’t planning to defeat the boss. I intended to claim the reward without fighting. “Gugyuru.” “Ugh, it appeared out of nowhere.” I muttered as I saw the monster before me—an orc. A hulking creature with green skin, wielding a wooden club. In the Pylar Dungeon, this was the most common monster. “Y-yeah, this is scary…” Facing a monster for the first time made my body tremble. Wolves I had fought plenty of times, so I was used to them. But this was different. As I thought that, the orc suddenly swung its club with a heavy sweep. “Waaah!” I shouted as I raised the

“Wh-why…?” That was the first thing I asked. Why was Guillermo standing right in front of me? “I hear you’ve been going in and out of exchange counters all over the place lately.” Guillermo grinned as he said this. I knew that exchanging the 〈Sword of Departure〉—which was supposed to be a first-clear reward—over and over would look suspicious. That’s why I had been careful to use a different exchange counter each time… “Hey, why don’t you show me what you were planning to exchange with me, huh?” Guillermo said this as he stepped closer. I—I have to run! I turned around to flee, but— “Dom, you can’t escape.” Behind me were several adventurers from Guillermo’s party. Before I realized it, his cronies had surrounded me. “Hey, how did you even get the 〈Sword of Departure〉?” At some point Guillermo had moved right in front of me, staring at the sword I was holding. “I cleared the Fassil Dungeon and got it…” “Did you hear that? Dom says he c

  • Chapter 7: First-clear Reward

And so, I succeeded once again in passing through the wall into the reward area. However, it’s a fixed rule that rewards after the first clear are inferior compared to the initial clear reward. Because of that, adventurers don’t repeatedly defeat the same boss just for the clear reward. If there are adventurers who fight the same boss over and over, their goal isn’t the clear reward but rather the drop items the boss leaves behind. That said, since I can’t defeat monsters, the clear reward is my only way to make money. I have no choice but to gratefully accept it. With that in mind, I opened the treasure chest without much expectation. “Huh?” Inside was a sword that looked very similar to the one I saw yesterday. Just to be sure, I checked the sword’s stats. ◇◇◇◇◇◇ 〈Sword of Departure〉 Attack Power: +100 ◇◇◇◇◇◇ Sure enough, it was the first-clear reward, the 〈Sword of Departure〉. Strange. I’d heard that the 〈Sword of Departure〉 could only be obtained on the

  • Chapter 6: Trying Different Methods

The next day, I couldn’t decide what to do for the whole day. Since I still had money left over from yesterday, there wasn’t any sense of urgency. But if I kept spending, it would eventually run out. Before that happened, I needed to take some kind of action. “First of all, why was I able to pass through the wall? I should figure that out.” If I just wanted quick money, I could dive into a dungeon and search for treasure chests. But in the long run, solving the mystery of passing through walls was far more important. If I could freely pass through walls, that would become a huge weapon for me. Though honestly, I couldn’t really imagine how exactly I’d use it. “Let’s try it on the wall at home first.” The walls at home are thinner than dungeon walls, so maybe it would be easier to pass through them. “〈Evasion〉.” I said it out loud, but nothing happened. Well, I didn’t really expect it to work so easily. If passing through walls was that simple, I would have noticed

  • Chapter 5: Clear Rewards

"What w-what the fuck just happened?" I was really confused. I looked around and immediately realized where I was. It was the room you're always taken to after defeating a dungeon boss. We call it the reward area. As proof, a teleportation array was drawn on the floor, and using it would let me easily exit the dungeon. And… "There's a treasure chest too…" "How lucky for me." The treasure chest you get after defeating the dungeon boss was sitting on the floor. Well, I'd just phased through the wall… I hadn't actually defeated the boss, but anyway, that's no reason not to take it. I opened it right away. "Whoa, it's a sword!" Inside was a single sword. I checked its stats. {SWORD OF DEPARTURE} (Increases attack by 100.) A +100 boost to attack isn't a bad stat, is it? To benefit from the sword, you must have the "sword technique" skill. If you don't have it, equipping it won't grant you the +100 bonus, so to me this is nothing more than a heavy stick.
