Chapter Six

Nicholas Bellingham burst through the glass doors of the bank, his chest pounding heavily as sweat poured down his face and neck.

His shirt clung tightly to his back, damp and wet, but he didn’t care. His only concern was his younger sister.

Olivia was in the hospital, and without the surgery, she wouldn’t make it.

He hadn’t even paused to catch his breath before rushing straight to the front desk.

“Good morning, Miss! I’m here for an—” he blurted out, desperate to speak to someone, anyone who could help.

But before he could finish, the bank clerk, without even looking up from her desk, snapped at him harshly, “Hey! How can you be so rude and impolite? Join the queue like everyone else!”

The words hit him like a slap. He blinked and looked around, only now noticing the long line of people waiting to be served.

Murmurs began to spread through the line, and he could feel the eyes on him—some curious, others filled with disdain.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly, almost a whisper, bowing his head slightly before retreating to the back of the queue.

He stood there, fists clenched, trying to stay calm. The line moved slowly, and with each passing second, a cold dread grew inside his chest. The thought of his sister lying on that hospital bed, fighting for her life, made his stomach churn.

After what felt like an eternity, his turn finally came. He approached the desk again, his voice polite but filled with urgency. “Good morning. I would like to apply for a loan, Miss.”

The clerk didn’t respond right away. Instead, she grabbed a form from a drawer, slammed it onto the desk, and said impatiently, “Fill this form out. Include your employment details and the amount you’re requesting. Then return it to me.” Her voice was laced with rudeness.

Nicholas didn’t flinch at her tone. He simply nodded, took the form, and stepped aside to fill it in. His hands trembled as he scribbled down the information.

He listed the amount he needed and marked that he worked at Sky Corporation, hoping it would help in securing the loan quicker.

A detail he thought would give weight to his application.

When he returned the form, the clerk skimmed through it for a while and finally looked up at him. The change in her expression was immediate. Her eyes narrowed, her lips curled into a sneer.

“You,” she muttered, then suddenly tore the form and tossed the pieces of paper back at him. The papers scattered across the floor.

Nicholas stood frozen, stunned. “What’s going on? Why would you do that? What kind of behavior is this? Why would you ter the form? Aren’t you supposed to process it?” He demanded, an angry expression bestowed upon his face.

The clerk leaned forward, glaring maliciously ta him. “You want to know why?” she hissed. “My sister works at Sky Corporation. Just this morning, she told me all about what’s going on in the company. You were fired for sexual assault, am I wrong?.”

Nicholas’s mouth fell open, but no sound came out.

The clerk’s voice rose with venom, “Am I wrong, Mr. Rapist?”

That word stabbed into his chest like a dagger. He flinched as if struck. His legs nearly gave out under him.

Nicholas felt so awkward and he was starting to feel the heat, he never thought it would be such a coincidence, and he didn’t imagine that his company would announce his fire to the public.

He wondered why they had done that! He was completely dumbfounded, and couldn't say anything. He was staring at the Clerk in front of him with so much shame.

He glanced at the people in the bank, and prayed that they haven't heard what the lady had said about him just now but he's quite wrong.

The entire bank had gone quiet. The people who had been whispering moments ago now openly stared at him, their eyes wide, their faces twisted with disgust or disbelief.

“No…” Nicholas whispered, barely audible. “That’s not the truth…”

But it didn’t matter. The damage was done.

The clerk straightened, her voice echoing across the lobby. “Our bank doesn’t offer loans to criminals. Especially not ones accused of such a vile thing. The only place you belong is the prison!”

Nicholas’s hands curled into fists. His eyes stung, but he refused to let the tears fall.

He looked very annoyed, he couldn't tolerate her attitude, and shouted back at her. “You shouldn't judge people without knowing or hearing their stories! You don't know what really happened to me, you didn't know the truth, and here you are, trashing my decency with all sorts of names.” By the time he was done, Nicholas was breathing heavily and gasping for breath.

The Clerk was angered by his sudden outburst, and slammed her palm on the counter. “Are you trying to say my sister lied against you? That the company made a mistake about the allegations? You must be very crazy and pathetic. You’re lucky I don’t call the police on you!” She shouted furiously at him.

Nicholas looked around the bank one last time. No one stepped forward. No one believed him. He turned without another word, his head bowed in humiliation, and walked toward the exit.

As the doors closed behind him, he heard the mocking applause from the crowd inside.

Everyone clapped their hands in satisfaction. They were impressed by how the Clerk had handled the matter. They were elated that the loan offer wasn't given to the young man.

The Clerk smiled appreciatively at the customer and everything continued after that.

Outside, he leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. Everything was falling apart. The loan had been his last chance. Now, there was nothing left.

Suddenly, his phone rang. He scrambled to take it out of his pocket, his heart jumping when he saw the hospital's number flash on the screen.

“Hello? I’m still trying to find the money, I swear, just give me a little more time—”

“Mr. Nicholas Bellingham,” the voice on the other end interrupted urgently. It was the doctor.

“Your sister’s condition has worsened. She’s fallen into a critical state. We need you to come to the hospital immediately to sign the documents. She needs surgery now. There shouldn't be any more delay.”

Nicholas’s blood ran cold. His grip tightened on the phone, his knuckles going white.

He didn’t know how he got his legs to move, but before he knew it, he was sprinting again—through the streets, dodging cars, his breath ragged, chest aching.

He had nothing. No money, no job, no one who believed in him. But he has Olivia and he needed to save her by all means.

He didn’t know how he’d find the money. He didn’t know what he’d do when he got to the hospital.

But one thing was certain.

He couldn’t give up. Not now. Not ever.

Not while his sister’s life was hanging by a thread.
