Caro returned home at the stroke of midnight.

She unlocked the door and stepped into the living room, taking off her high heels.

The house was silent and drowned in darkness.

Thinking her husband had already gone to bed, she reached for the switch, turning it on.

Lights flooded the room.

Bruce was sitting on the couch, his elbows rested on his knees, hands clasped together and head bowed.

Caro was stunned to find him still awake.

"I thought you'd be asleep by now, Bruce," she said. "Why are you still up by this hour? I told you not to wait."

Bruce slowly lifted his head but he couldn't meet her eyes. Not yet.

"We need to talk," he said quietly. "Caro."

Her lips pressed into a thin line. Annoyance flashed across her face.

"There's nothing to talk about," she replied, tossing her heels aside. "I've had an exhausting day. I need rest."

"You broke your promise to me," Bruce said. "You said you wouldn't see other men. But you lied to me."

Caro stopped moving.

She turned, studying him for a moment as if deciding whether he was even worth the effort.

Then she walked over and sat across from him, crossing her legs slowly.

"Bruce," she said, her voice hardening. "Before you start drowning in self-pity, let me tell you what I've accomplished tonight."

Bruce’s jaw tightened, but he stayed silent.

"As you know, my family's company is having some serious financial difficulties at the moment," she said. "We are nearly at the brink of bankruptcy."

Bruce was well aware of this.

The Griffin family have been struggling with their business lately. Things have gone so bad they laid off a hundred employees.

Bruce even had to pull his weight around by getting a job.

He went from being a house husband to delivering pizzas in order to support his wife.

Caro continued. "As CEO, I couldn’t just sit around and hope for a miracle. I met Willis at an exclusive club and we hit it off. We have been talking for two weeks."

She leaned back slightly, her eyes gleaming like a blade under moonlight.

"Tonight, Willis agreed to invest $8 million into Griffin Enterprise," her face lit up with a smile. "Do you have any idea what that amount of money could do for this family? It'd solve all our financial problems."

"So you're telling me you slept with Willis because he promised to invest in the family business?" Bruce said darkly. "Isn't that like selling your body for favours? Where's the dignity in that?"

Caro's jaw tightened and a deep frown furrowed in her brow.

"Say that again."

"Where’s your dignity, Caro?" he demanded. “Where’s the line? Is there anything you won’t trade for money?”

"You piece of shit!" She hurled one of her heels at him.

The heel nearly struck him across the face.

"You should be grateful I'm working my ass out to provide for this family," she continued, her voice laced with venom.

"Before you start judging me, let's see the colour of your money. Can you invest in Griffin Enterprise?"

Bruce swallowed hard. "I can't... But—"

"Exactly, you ungrateful bastard," She cut in. "You're poor and pathetic. You don't own a dime to your name. All you do is cook and clean and deliver pizza like a servant."

Before Bruce could respond, she shot to her feet and pointed her finger at him, her eyes as hard as nails.

"I put food on the table. I clothe you. I keep a roof over your head despite how useless you are to me. Your greatest achievement in life is that you married me."

Bruce’s fists clenched so tightly his nails dug into his palms. He finally met her fiery eyes.

"I know I'm not worth anything to you or the Griffin family," he said. "But that shouldn't be an excuse to cheat on me. I'm your husband, Caro. I love you."

Caro laughed.

"Love doesn't pay bills, Bruce. I have a duty to my family and your so-called love, can't fulfill that duty."

She leaned forward, her eyes as cold as ice. "I slept with Willis because you don't have the balls to do what he did tonight."

Bruce’s throat burned.

"But I'm your husband," he said. "Doesn't that count for anything?"

"Let's be real here," Caro said flatly. "I only married you because for some odd reason, my grandmother forced me to."

She spread her arms wide as if stating a fact. "You wouldn't seriously call us a couple, would you? We don't sleep in the same bed. We are more like roommates who happen to be legally married."

Bruce said nothing.

Because it was true.

They had been married for three years but slept in separate beds. She wouldn't even let him touch her. It was as if she had built an invisible wall between them.

Her parents had been strongly against the marriage, but Elizabeth, her late grandmother, forced the union to happen.

This led Caro to begin an open marriage.

Bruce loved her so much he believed it was only a phrase. That one day, she'll finally acknowledge him as her husband.

But tonight tore whatever thread of hope he had left to shreds.

"Caro," Bruce said after a long silence, his voice raw. "I know I was never your first choice. But I loved you. I still do. I believed that if I stayed, if I tried harder, you’d eventually see me as your husband."

His chest tightened painfully.

“But what you did tonight,” He shook his head. “You crossed the line. That’s unforgivable.”

"So what are you going to do about it?" Caro asked, planting her hands on her hips. She looked down at him like he was something disgusting she had stepped on. "Are you going to divorce me?”

The arcade hummed with faint electronic beeps and the muffled cheers of teenagers lost in their games. But here, in this quieter corner where the machines were older and the lighting dimmer, it felt as if the world had shrunk to just the two of them.Bruce stood with his hands in his pockets as Lucy faced him, her eyes heavy with fatigue."You blocked my number," she said, her voice flat. There was no judgement in her tone, only bitterness.Bruce nodded slowly. "Yes, I did."Lucy met his eyes. "Why?"He maintained eye contact with her. "Because Blake asked me to stay away from you. And because it was the right thing to do."Lucy let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "The right thing to do. That's what you call it?" She shook her head. "You disappear for three years. No calls, no messages, nothing. And then you come back with a girlfriend and expect me to just accept it?"Bruce's forehead creased. "I didn't expect anything from you, Lucy. You made it clear years ago what we were. You said

  • The arcane meetup

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, with the warm sun shining over the emerald green of the private golf course. Bruce stood at the tee with a relaxed stance, holding his club loosely in his hands. A small group of club members gathered around him, observing him closely. They were all wealthy businessmen and executives from various industries. Each of them were acquainted with him as Bruce Smith, the rising star at Shepherd Group. One of them, a stout man with a flushed face and a hearty laugh, leaned on his club. "So, Bruce, I've been hearing a lot about Shepherd Group's decision to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. Bold move. Everyone's talking about it."Bruce lined up his shot, his eyes focused on the ball. "It's the future," he said plainly. "Shepherd Group has always been about evolution. We either adapt or we perish."Another man, slender and wearing glasses, shook his head. "But $20 trillion dollars? Really? That's a massive gamble. I've seen companies try to brea

  • The pitch

A few days after the Genesis Aerospace dinner party, another board meeting took place at Shepherd Group. The boardroom was silent as Bruce stepped forward, his presence commanding attention. The board members sat in their high-backed leather chairs, eyeing Bruce with skepticism as he delivered his pitch.Bruce placed his hands on the table, his eyes sweeping across the room. "Ladies and gentlemen, I know I'm still new to this board, but I believe I've found something that could take Shepherd Group to the next level."He glanced at Victoria, who gave him a subtle nod of encouragement."As many of you know, Victoria and I attended Genesis Aerospace's dinner party. While we were there, we mingled with some of their top engineers and strategists. We learned quite a bit about their vision for the future." He paused. "In the coming decades, people will be able to fly back and forth in space. It's no longer science fiction; it's happening now."The board members exchanged glances. A few lean

  • The drive home

The champagne had worn off somewhere between the city skyline and the bridge crossing the river. Lucy blinked slowly as the gentle hum of the Rolls-Royce's engine filled her ears. She had been staring out the window for what felt like hours, watching the city lights bleed into streaks of gold and red.Her head still throbbed from the alcohol she had. She never drank alcohol until this evening, which caused her a slight headache. Whenever she thought about the party, the engagement announcement, and the way Bruce had looked at her when she confronted him at the bar, her headache worsened. At that moment, an image suddenly flashed through her mind. An image of Victoria Cross wrapping her arm around Bruce's as if she owned him. Lucy pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to push the memory away. It didn't work.Beside her, Blake sat with one leg crossed over the other, his phone screen glowing brightly in front of him. He had been scrolling through messages for the past few minut

  • Blake and Bruce

After they announced the engagement, Bruce and Victoria hung around for like ten more minutes before finally heading out. Bruce was about to follow Victoria toward the exit when Blake's voice stopped him."Bruce, a moment, if you don't mind."Bruce turned as Blake gestured toward a quiet alcove near the edge of the hall, away from the crowd. Bruce glanced at Victoria, who gave him a slight nod, then followed Blake. The alcove was small, lined with velvet curtains and dimly lit by a single lamp. It was quiet enough to hold a conversation. Blake leaned against the wall, still holding his champagne glass. "Lucy told me a lot about you. About how you two met. How you were neighbors. How you stood by her side in challenging times."Bruce inclined his head. "Did she now?"Blake smiled, his eyes sharp but warm. "She mentioned how you paid her rent when she couldn't afford it. How you covered Tyler's hospital bills. How you were there for her after the accident that cost her the use of her l

  • The bar conversation

As soon as Blake and Lucy disappeared into the crowd, Bruce pulled his arm free from Victoria's grip and turned to her sharply. "What are you doing? We're not dating." Victoria's smile remained calm. "Relax. This is all part of my plan." Bruce frowned, his brow tightening. "What plan?" Victoria leaned in, lowering her voice to a whisper. "Now that Blake thinks we're together, he'll take us more seriously. He'll invite us to more private meetings, and treat us like close friends. Couples let their guard down around other couples. It's human nature." Bruce's eyes narrowed as he processed her words. "You think he'll let us in if we act like a couple?" Victoria nodded, maintaining a steady gaze. "He's ambitious, but he's also arrogant. He'll want to show off in order to impress us. That's when we'll get the information we need." Bruce was quiet for a moment, running his hand through his hair. It was a risky move, yet he had to admit it was pure genius. "Alright," he said at last. "
