Julian wasn't dreaming, but it didn't feel like he was awake either. But, deep inside his head, a memory film played out on fast-forward which is his early life as an unwanted child left on a doorstep, the tragic death of his overworked grandmother, a brutal orphanage, and a failed college time that carved his path into the Army.
There, he had discovered his obsession with firearms: bolts, springs, and the chemistry between the machines. He remembered opening his own small gun shop at forty-six, only for his life to be snuffed out by a panicked thief's bullet.
"Life was cruel too, huh?" he thought as the final scene faded.
Bwahhhh!
A blaring horn shattered the silence. Julian sat upright, gasping as pain flicked through his bruised chest and forehead as he remembered Lisanna’s brutal beating. But as he touched his head, he realized his wound had been carefully cleaned and bandaged.
Was it that guard? he wondered before the horn sounded again, demanding action.
He scrambled out of his bed and dressed in his Zoldyck uniform — white buttoned shirt, black trousers, polished shoes, and a short black cape. Outside, lines of disciplined students stood under the eyes of stern guards.
The classroom bearing the crossed revolver crest of the Zoldyck family, Julian walked into the room by keeping his head down, sitting on a seat near the edge.
The doors swung open immediately, and a lady with snow white hair swaying like sunlight walked in. She wore a long coat, wavering behind her and emanating an overwhelming pressure on the children. She was Athena Zoldyck.
"Good morning, children of Zoldyck," Athena's voice echoed effortlessly through the room. "I know most of you are still scared from yesterday's trial... But you should be glad. You're alive. The dead don't get second chances, but you who survive do. Don't waste it."
Her words are cruel but compelling which hardened the resolve in the room. Athena turned to the board, revealing a bold sentence. Path of Alchemy – Zoldyck Lineage.
"For the next three weeks, you will study the foundations of Alchemy… huh.. specifically our family's path: Gun Alchemy. Because during the third trial, every one of you will undergo your awakening ceremony."
Julian leaned forward, his heart throbbing fastly. Gun Alchemy...
A brilliant mainline student named Miya stood up. “Alchemy is the power to transform and combine natural resources.”
Athena smiled, nodding her head in approval.
"Alchemy lets us manipulate matter in any form," Athena continued, walking over to a table holding steel ingots. Raising her hand, a soft white light swirled with black shards shimmered around her wrist. The solid steel melted without heat, floating and twisting through the air before forming into a revolver.
The class gasped in shock.
"This is Gun Alchemy," Athena announced, puffing her chest up. "Understanding the chemical bonds of metal and the structure of a gun, reshaping it with your will. But you cannot perform real alchemy without reaching a certain level of Cognis… your mind is your engine."
She pointed to the ranking chart displayed on the board:
★ Novice Alchemist (26%–30%)
★★ Binder Alchemist (31%–43%)
★★★ Adept Alchemist (44%–50%)
★★★★ Meister Alchemist (51%–59%)
★★★★★ Arcanist Alchemist (60%–65%)
★★★★★★ Grand Arcanist (66%–71%)
★★★★★★★ Alchemist General (72%–76%)
★★★★★★★★ Alchemist Scholar (77%–80%)
★★★★★★★★★ Alchemist Sage (81%–88%) – Highest ever reached
★★★★★★★★★★ Philosopher (89%–∞%) – Mythical, never achieved
"Completing the Trials of Metal will graduate you as Binder Alchemists," Athena explained. "The Philosopher rank is a legend, no one has ever reached infinite Cognis, though 88% is the highest recorded in Brimstone. Survive, grow, and if you reach 26%, you will unlock your alchemist state."
Sitting at his desk, Julian's head stirred once. The guns, the chemistry, the transformations.. they aligned with the engineering expertise inside his past-life memories. With this knowledge, I have a chance of surviving.
The weeks that followed passed slowly.
Every morning, Julian pushed his body through unorthodox military drills and specialized calisthenics he pulled from his memories, ignoring the strange looks from other students. He forced down the strict diet required for physical conditioning, battling constant exhaustion and lingering trauma in his brain.
After training, he locked himself in the vast library, studying texts on metal properties, energy flow, powder reactions, and alchemical fusion theories linked to Metallica, the eastern industrial city governed by the Zoldycks.
While Lisanna kept her distance, likely biding her time and lower-house students whispering behind his back, Julian grew tougher, and deadlier.
Three weeks later, the trial hall shimmered under harsh torchlight. Athena stood at the front, arms folded. The air was filled with tension.
Trial Two was here. Julian clenched his fists, his breathing was steady and his mind clear because he was ready.

Increase of threat
The landscape was wide and open. Snow stretched in every direction, smooth and white, glittering under the dim early morning light. A thin stream ran through the scene, its water flowing softly over rounded stones. There were no birds, no wind. Just quiet. From the freezing stream, Julian dragged himself out.His arms trembled as he pulled his soaked body onto the snow-covered bank, coughing up icy water that had filled his lungs during the fall. He lay flat on the ground, gasping, every breath cutting like knives in his throat. His skin was pale like paper, dark circles shaded his eyes, and the wound on his side had opened again, dripping blood that melted tiny red dots into the snow. His clothes clung to him, soaked. Only the strap across his shoulder reminded him that his supply bag was still with him… though it too was soaked and half-frozen. The cold was worse than before, plus the fact that he was weak to cold made his condition worse. Julian stared up at the moon, still faintl
A close step toward growth
Julian stood still for a moment, breath misting in the icy night air, staring at the dozens of arrows aimed directly at him. The tips glinted under the pale moonlight like silver teeth, ready to rip him apart. Behind him, the forest stretched wide and black, a maze of snow laden trees swaying gently in the wind. The cold gnawed at his skin, yet sweat ran down his spine."Well, this is definitely not what I expected," he muttered to himself, a dry, bitter chuckle escaping his lips. "A step closer to death… is just a step closer to growth."He looked up; eyes sharper than they had been moments ago resolved surging despite the pain throbbing in his side. "I choose the wolves."His words made the armed group hesitate. A few of them looked at one another in disbelief. Only Miya didn't flinch. Her smirk stayed, her eyes studying him like he was a puzzle she already knew the answer to."You sure you don't want holes in your body instead of being torn to shreds?" she asked, tilting her head s
Choose your destiny.
The clearing fell silent except for the sound of distant wind and the soft crunch of snow under boots. The cold air bit at Julian's skin, and his breath steamed in the chill like smoke. In front of him, Miya stood at ease, her long black hair swaying lightly in the breeze. Behind her, a small squad of armed teens waited, tense but obedient."How dare you speak to Lady Miya like that?" A girl stepped out from Miya's right; her bow was already drawn tight. Her black and blue hair glimmered slightly under the pale moonlight, and her icy blue eyes locked on Julian with a glare sharp enough to cut steel. "Do you even understand the situation you're in?" "Nina." The name came from Miya, her tone calm but playful. She raised one hand like she was about to scold a child. "Calm down. It's fine. Honestly, I like his confidence."Her eyes turned back to Julian, narrowing ever so slightly as her lips curved into an almost amused smile. "You know," she added casually, "not everyone can take down
Killing spree
"Argh!" Julian's voice cracked through the cave as the wooden stake stabbed into his side. Pain shot up his ribs, but he didn't fall. His hand gripped the sharpened stake instinctively, blood seeping between his fingers as his body stiffened.Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed Julian by the collar and yanked hard, his eyes wild, like adrenaline had taken over. Julian's feet left the ground for a second before his back slammed into the stone cave wall with a thud that rattled the campfire embers. Marcus exhaled sharply, forcing a cocky grin. "Well, that was easy," he said, though his voice shook slightly. "Gena, send the signal. Now."Gena, standing near their bags, hesitated for only a moment before rummaging through them. The small orange glow of the campfire danced over her pale face, her expression somewhere between relief and unease. She pulled out a flare gun, its polished metal reflecting the firelight."I really thought we blew our cover back there," Lucas muttered, his laugh
Strange Group
The air inside the cave smelled of pine sap, smoke, and a hint of ash. It was warmer now, thanks to the fire and the stone walls that trapped the heat. The shadows danced along the walls, and outside the cave's mouth, the world was black, except for the occasional glint of moonlight reflecting off untouched snow.Peter, the boy who had been badly injured when they first arrived, leaned against the cave wall, his head supported by Gena as she spoon-fed him water from a wooden cup Julian had carved. He was awake now, pale and groggy, but alive."Thank you again," Marcus said, breaking the quiet. "I mean it. For everything."Julian sat with his legs crossed near the fire, poking at the embers with a stick. "No problem," he replied, though his voice sounded distant. He stared into the flames for a moment longer, thinking. He felt nervous in their presence. He wasn't used to speaking with people outside of his mother, the maids, and a few guards, but he knew those thoughts didn't matter he
Trial Two
The wooden doors of the trial hall slowly opened, drawing everyone’s attention to the center where the chief examiner stood flanked by elite guards wearing dark black jackets, and three-star gold trimmed badges. And the chief examiner has 4 stars, the same as Athena. He was Kyle Raymond. The examiner stepped forward, his voice cutting through the silent hall. "Children of Zoldyck, the second trial begins now. This is a survival test. Seven days and out in the wild. You will be allowed to form your own seven member teams by choice. We will blindfold each of you before moving out. When the cloth comes off... you'll be in the field."His gaze darted across the children. "Our blood runs like steel, skin strong as titanium, and our hearts with cold resolve. Prove that you deserve the name Zoldyck."The guards quickly moved across the hall, distributing black duffle bags filled with essential gear like blankets, rations, a tool kit, a pot, and a survival knife before covering blindfolds ove
