I never thought betrayal had a sound-until I heard her laugh. My heart beat fast, hoping I heard wrong.

You know that kind of laugh you hear that made your heart skip for joy knowing fully well she was yours.

I felt relieved hearing her laughing, watching the radiating light of love on her face each time she smiled at me.

At least, I thought it was genuine. Tha she loved me, that was what she said most time we were together.

It was like a song to my ears and it was a matter of time before I fell in love with it melody.

It wasn't just her giggle. It was a full-blown, head-thrown-back, soul-cutting laugh. The kind of laugh that used to be mine. The kind she used to give me when I said something stupid, or when we'd lie under the stars and talk about our future.

A future that I had always pictured with us and our unborn kids.

Now she was laughing like that in someone else's arms.

In his arms.

I stood there, frozen in the corridor outside the music room, the door slightly ajar. I hadn't meant to snoop. I came with roses.

Stupid, right? She liked lilies, but I couldn't afford them, so I settled for cheap roses from the street vendor. I just wanted to surprise her.

All my life, I had always prioritise just one person. She ment the world to me and I would even go to the end of the earth to get her what she wanted.

I would risk even my life to give it to her even if it meant me going broke or getting kicked to the earth.

That was the kind of love I had for her but everything was going to nut right before me. I had hoped I was hearing it wrong. That I maybe be wrong.

But the surprise was on me.

"God, you're so much better than him," she whispered. I could hear every word.

I clutch the flower that I was holding that I could feel the tiny and tender stick break under my palms.

My breath was a bit itchy and I felt like a total fool.

He chuckled. "He's a nobody. You were wasting your time."

She didn't defend me. Not once.

Didn't even hesitate.

"You think he suspects anything?" the guy asked.

"He's too dumb to notice. Honestly, he should thank me. I was doing charity work dating him. I wish he even caught us in the act. It is high time I let him know we are not compatible.”

They both laughed again.

My fingers loosened, and the roses dropped to the floor with a soft thud.

That was when the door creaked open wider, betraying my presence. I wanted to go into the room with fury and knock the teeth out from his mouth but then I know I would only be doing him a favour and I would end up being the scale goat.

And she saw me.

Her smile didn't falter. Not for a second. My face went pale.

How could she?

She behaved like I didn't mean a single thing. Like It didn't matter if I had caught her cheating which I did.

"Oh," she said, stepping away from him like she was bored. "Guess the charity case showed up."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. My throat burned, my chest felt tight, and my world spun like I was falling off a cliff with no end.

He looked at me like I was a stain on his designer shoes. "You can leave, man. She's done with you."

"Tell me it's not true," I croaked. "Tell me this isn't real."

She laughed again-God, that laugh. " You were convenient, Pointus. You walked me to class. Helped with my homework. But you've got nothing. No money, no future, no status. Why would I waste my youth on someone like you?”

I don't remember how I got out of that room. I think my body moved on its own. I was outside before I realized I had tears running down my cheeks. I wiped them away quickly. Men aren't supposed to cry. That's what my father always said, before he left.

He was this type of man that would instill in me want it meant to be a man but today I was not.

I was another cry baby who was pained for seeing the girl he spent all his life worshipping.

But I cried anyway.

I wandered aimlessly, numb, past students laughing, past couples holding hands. My legs led me to the bridge near the river. The one everyone warned people about at night.

I stood at the edge, looking down into the dark river.

Would they miss me?

Would she miss me?

Probably not.

I took one step forward.

That's when it happened.

A flash of light.

I stumbled back, shielding my eyes. I thought I was hallucinating. Maybe this was what dying felt like.

Then I saw it-floating right in front of me. A glowing, translucent screen with strange letters that morphed into words I could understand.

[SYSTEM ACTIVATION DETECTED]

[User: Pointus Gray]

[Emotional collapse registered. Survival probability: 4%. Intervention approved.]

[Welcome to the Fortune System. Your first task has been issued.]

I blinked. "What the hell..."

The screen shifted.

[Task One: Spend $1,000,000 in 72 hours.]

[System Rules: ]

[You must spend it all. ]

[You cannot reveal the source of the money. ]

[ The money will self-destruct if not used in time. ]

[Completion unlocks greater power. ]

Timer Begins: Now.

A digital countdown started ticking in red.

71:59:59

"Is this a joke?" I whispered.

But then a phone vibrated in my pocket. Not mine-it was new, sleek, and unfamiliar. I pulled it out. On the screen was an app I didn't install, already open.

It displayed a digital bank account.

Balance: $1,000,000.00

My heart skipped.

I looked around-no cameras, no prank show crew, no laughing students. Just me and the night.

The screen still floated, glowing softly in the darkness.

Was this real?

I didn't know what to believe anymore.

My girlfriend of two years had just destroyed me, turned me into a joke for everyone to laugh at. I had nothing. No family, no friends, no future. I was invisible.

But now... I had a million dollars.

And maybe, just maybe, a chance to become something more.

I looked back at the water.

And back at the new phone that got into my pocket in an unexplainable way. My breath etched in my throat.

"Is this real?" I said with my eyes almost popping out of their sockets..

I was never good with goodbyes. I was in pain. I never gave Martha a chance to fully explain herself all this while. A part of me had been too hard on her. Tears welled on my face as I stared at the lifeless corpse of my mother. She was looking whitish, and the color of life was drained from her face. A hand fell on my shoulders. "We are going to avenge her, brother. We are going to make that bastard pay for what he has done, but first you don't have to carry the burden alone. We are here to support you." My gaze shifted drastically. "Support me? You are nothing but a hinderance. I don't think I would want to risk the lives of you lots. It is time I settle this with Zack once and for all." Alex walked towards us. "That is the system talking, Jason," he said with a calm face. "I might have not known you for a long while, but I could tell that you are not evil. You have a soft heart, and that is why you will never become like Zack." Alex saidI shifted again. "Don't you think th

I stared at the blinking message floating in front of my mind, the words etched in blood-red letters that seemed to pulse with the rhythm of my broken heart. They trembled with fury. With rage that clawed at my chest like a living thing.No. I would not stay weak. I would not let Zack’s legacy claim me without a fight.I gritted my teeth, fingers hovering over the translucent red YES button. The memories of my father’s warnings, of his sacrifices, of the quiet resilience he had instilled in me, surged into my consciousness. He had made me strong—but he had never made me cruel. That strength was mine to wield. I could fight back, but at what cost?I pressed YES.Immediately, the world went silent. A wave of energy surged through me, a cold, electric hum that resonated through every fiber of my being. Pai

Martha’s blood kept spreading across the cold floor like a dark red shadow. The smell of it filled the silent building. My fists tightened. Martha might have not been the mother of her year but she was still the woman who birth me into the fucked world.Every instinct inside me screamed to attack Zack, to tear that smug look off his face. But the red laser dancing on my mother’s forehead reminded me that one wrong move would end her life.I forced my breathing to slow.“Good,” Zack said with a satisfied smile. “You’re finally thinking like a rational man.”His fingers tapped lightly on the table. I don't know if it was his system but I felt like he could anticipate and calculate my moves even right before I could hatch my next plan. “Do you know why I like you, Jason?” he continued casually. “You’re smart. Not like the others who tried to fight me blindly.”I simply said nothing but kept a fixed gaze on him even though I needed to act fast if I was going to save my mother. My eyes k

The moment he stepped into the building, my gaze went back to my mother. " Did you do this? Did you think I won't know?" I said with vermin in my voice. Martha fell to her knees before me, " You have to trust me,son. I didn't..I didn't do this." she said with tears. Zack laughed as his gentle step got closer. " No, Jason. You mother was quite easy to decieve." he stopped right in front of us and smirked. " Why are you here, Zack?" I slammed my fist against the table in front of me. " Calm down son." " I am not your son!" Zack stood still for a while, his eyebrows arched for a bit. " You have his eyes you know. The same arrogance he had. That was the annoying part about him." I looked at Martha, " You should have seen this. You should have known that he was going to come tracing you." I snapped at Martha again. " I am sorry, Jason. I should have been careful." Martha said getting to her feet. " Ah, don't be, Martha. Your coming today is going to save

Rossa’s words stayed in my head long after the call ended. You did well.Did I?I dropped the phone on the table and ran my hand through my hair. My chest felt tight. Hearing her say Zack killed my real father changed everything. If that was true, then my whole life had been built on a lie.“When do you want to meet her?” Rossa asked calmly.“Tonight,” I replied without thinking. His eyebrows shot up. “That fast?”“Yes. If Zack already knows I’m moving against him, then waiting will only give him more time.”Rossa nodded slowly. “Where?”I thought for a moment. It had to be a place open enough so we could see danger coming. But not too crowded.“The old warehouse near the river,” I finally said. “No one uses it anymore. You can position yourself around without her noticing.”Rossa gave a small smile. “Now you are thinking like a leader.”I didn’t feel like one.I felt like a son who needed to give her mother the attention she needed. By evening, the sky was dark and heavy with clouds

" Who is that?" Rossa asked immediately I dropped the call. " My mother." I said staring at the metallic object in my hand. Rossa squeezed his face. " And what does she want?" The air felt tense the moment he asked. " She wants to see me. That was all she said." I replied absent mindedly. " Just that?" Rossa's face changed colour. " How am I supposed to know? We haven't talked in a lot while. she called me now and said it was of great importance." " You can always turn her down, Jason. You have been doing fine all this while." Rossa replied I sigh. He was right. I had managed to do things on my own ever since she told me Zack was my father. I was not sure why she said it or if what she said was true. I knew Zack was not my father. He can never be. " She is my mother, Rossa. I know that we have our difference but I can't just turn her down." I said with my brows squeezed. " You are right but what if this was a trap? She married Zack, Jason. Don't you forg
