Zavi wakes up in a luxurious manor with a terrifying blue screen in his peripheral vision: [LIFEFORCE EXPIRATION: 24 DAYS]. He is a pawn in a deadly game played by the city's elite, his heartbeat tethered to the very architecture of the Royal Palace. To survive, he must navigate the suffocating obsession of a high-ranking noblewoman who views him as her masterpiece, and the machinations of a Prince who treats lives as raw data. With time running out, Zavi must decide: does he submit to the machine, or does he tear the foundations of the kingdom down with him?

Chapter 1: The First Date Disaster

The sunlight streaming through the velvet curtains felt less like a morning wake-up call and more like a countdown. Zavi sat bolt upright, his heart hammering against his ribs as a translucent, flickering blue screen hovered in his peripheral vision.

[WARNING: LIFEFORCE EXPIRATION IMMINENT. 24 DAYS REMAINING.]

Zavi stared at the glowing numbers, his breath hitching. "Twenty-four days? Are you kidding me? I just got here!"

He scrambled out of the plush four-poster bed, his silk robes tangling around his legs. The memory of the original owner—a pampered, sickly noble candidate—was a jumbled mess of useless etiquette and obsession with a woman named Serafia.

A sharp, rhythmic knock sounded at the door.

"Master Zavi? Lady Serafia has arrived for your scheduled tea. She is waiting in the conservatory," a servant called out.

Zavi wiped a cold sweat from his forehead. "Right. The tea date. The one that ends with me getting framed for treason in three weeks."

He threw on a coat, his hands trembling. If he wanted to survive, he needed to make her hate him. He needed her to walk away.

The conservatory was stiflingly ornate, filled with exotic flowers that smelled like expensive perfume and impending doom. Serafia sat at a wrought-iron table, her posture perfect, her gaze fixed on him with an intensity that made Zavi’s skin crawl.

"You look pale, Zavi. I trust you slept well?" she asked, her voice like liquid honey.

Zavi pulled out a chair, letting it screech against the stone floor. "Honestly? I woke up and realized this room is a disaster. Who puts lilies in a closed space? It smells like a funeral parlor."

Serafia blinked, her expression unreadable. "I thought you enjoyed the scent of lilies. You bought the entire harvest for me last month."

"Yeah, well, I had a change of heart," Zavi said, leaning back and slouching as much as the stiff chair allowed. "Everything in this manor is trying too hard. It’s tacky. It’s like a decorator threw a gold mine at a dumpster and hoped it would look royal."

He gestured vaguely at the gilded walls.

"Tacky?" Serafia tilted her head, a small, curious smile touching her lips. "You’ve always defended your family’s aesthetic with such… vigor."

"I was being polite. It’s exhausting being polite, Serafia. Don’t you think?" Zavi picked up the teacup, sniffed it, and immediately set it down with a grimace. "Is this Earl Grey? It’s swill. It tastes like hot leaf water filtered through a dusty rug."

Serafia leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "You’ve never complained about my tea service before. You usually talk about how exquisite the blend is for twenty minutes straight."

Zavi smirked, hoping he looked like a total jerk. "I was bored. I’d rather stare at a wall than talk about leaves for twenty minutes. And frankly, the way you’re staring at me? It’s creepy. You’re hovering."

"I’m concerned," she countered smoothly, her gaze darkening. "You’re acting quite differently today. It’s almost as if you’ve stopped performing for me."

"Maybe I just don't like the performance anymore," Zavi snapped. "Maybe I don't want to be the noble candidate you want me to be. I’m tired, I’m irritable, and I’d really like you to leave so I can nap in peace."

"Is that so?" Serafia’s smile widened, but it didn't reach her eyes. She reached across the table, her gloved fingers hovering just inches from his hand. "You know, all the other suitors come here and recite poetry, trying to outdo each other with lies. You’re the first one to just be… honest. It’s refreshing."

Zavi felt his stomach drop. "Refreshing? I’m insulting you. I’m insulting your tea. I’m telling you to leave."

"I know," she murmured, standing up. She leaned over, her perfume overwhelming his senses. "It’s charming. Most men are so terrified of offending me. You seem liberated by it. It makes me wonder what else you’re hiding behind that cold, biting exterior."

"I'm not hiding anything," Zavi said, pushing his chair back. "I just don't like you."

"Liar," she whispered.

She turned and walked toward the exit, her silk dress rustling against the marble floor. Zavi let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders finally sagging.

"Thank god," he muttered. "Maybe she’ll find some other idiot to stalk."

An hour later, Zavi was pacing his room, trying to figure out how to stop the timer.

A knock at the door startled him. He opened it to find a servant holding a small, velvet-lined box.

"A gift from Lady Serafia, sir. She said you seemed cold earlier, so she wanted to make sure you felt her presence throughout the night."

Zavi took the box, his hands shaking as he pried it open.

Inside lay a heavy, ornate silver collar. It was engraved with delicate, sharp thorns and a miniature lock, the metal still warm to the touch.

Underneath it was a note written in elegant, flowing script:

Since you find my presence 'suffocating,' I thought you might appreciate something that stays closer. Wear this tonight, Zavi. We wouldn't want you to wander off while I’m dreaming of you.

Zavi stared at the cold metal, his heart stopping. He wasn't just being watched—he was being claimed. And according to the timer on his wall, he had only three weeks left to escape the tightening grip of a woman who was clearly far more dangerous than he had imagined.
