Walking towards the door, the sound of the loud music coming from within vibrated through Eddie's body making him feel the buzz of the silver ring in his pocket.

The company that his wife established, the Jet Age Group had just been recorded as a second-generation company and they had organized a party to celebrate her and that was her gift.

But immediately his hands sped off through the handle of the door into the vast room, and the music that aired in the room paused.

Their faces soon twisted from joy to scorn and twitching their lips in irritation.

“What is he doing here?“ Nicolas, Eddie's brother-in-law blotted with a long hiss

The sound of their murmur, sneers, and hateful glances made him stiff got him petrified on a spot, a slight sigh escaping from his lips afterwards.

When he got married to Clara, they were as broke as f**k, until he helped Clara out with the money that was used to start the business.

But as the company continued to boom, they started to treat him like the family's thrash, good only for the chores and because he worked as a delivery man.

“Calm done everyone, I did.“ The clicking of Lady Gaga's heels descended from the stairs as she made her way to the sofa and crossed her legs.

It was somewhat surprising that she was defending him this time, since she used to be the chief when it came to humiliating him and he knew that this was more than goodwill, there was a reason behind it.

“Here jerk. Let's get this over with already because you suffocate the whole of this family with your bad odor.“ Lady Gaga squeezed her nostrils, pushing an A4 paper, snapping him off from his thoughts and he reached out to it.

His eyes skimmed through the details and it was written right on the top, pregnancy diagnosis and it belonged to Clara.

“OMG, Clara is pregnant! I'm going to be a father soon.“ The smile that broke up on his face was just a glimpse of his inner joy that he tried hard to hold back.

'At last, our marriage is going to be consolidated'

His eyes sped off through the hall, smitten with so much joy, outlining every single detail in search of Clara but she was not there.

“But what about Clara?“ He inquired further.

“She will not be seeing you anymore.“ Lady Gaga added to leading Eddie into a sudden phase of confusion.

“I don't understand." Her words confused him.

She pushed another A4 paper towards him with a frown on her face this time and said. “Right there, read it carefully. That's if your low class hasn't blinded your eyesight.“

Eddie ignored her last statement since he was already used to it.

And it was okay that she was acting that way. She had always wanted Clara to be with someone else. And getting pregnant. It wasn't certainly going to go down well with her.

He read through it carefully and he was struck by what his eyes caught up with, throwing the paper to the ground almost immediately.

“A Divorce proposal? But why?“

“It's all over the news already. Clara is the fastest rising female CEO that the city has ever seen and she needs someone that will help her not draw her back.“

“What good can a delivery agent do for a CEO apart from drawing her back in the mud?“ Lady Gaga hissed.

“But she never said she is tired of living with me. And besides, she has my child and we need to be there to take care of her. If she wants a divorce, she would be here to say it herself.“

“What child? Stop being so delusional already. The child isn't yours. You don't expect me to breed pigs as grandchildrens in this life time do you." She snarled.

“Isn't it obvious that she doesn't want you, anyone? Stop being such a leech already." Clara's cousin and secretary, Juliet hissed with irritation.

He could barely hear the proceeding words as he was smitten by the words, unable to move, and for a while, his breath was held in his nostrils. If there was anything that he knew Clara for, she would not cheat on him.

“Why will you say such a word, just to make me leave your daughter? Eddie could not help the frown anymore.

“Isn't it enough that you hate me already?“

“Are you calling my mother a liar, you moron? “ Nicolas advanced towards him, ready to beat him up but Lady Gaga raised her hands making her stop right on the spot.

“Don't waste your energy on such a stinker.“

“First Eddie stinker, I won't waste my time here to lie to you when you don't have a choice here. I already got a Divorce lawyer and you are getting nothing. And it's not like I am begging you to sign it. I'm ordering you?

The only thing that you are going to do to her is drag her back. She needs a real man and I am excited that she made this decision.“ She added.

Eddie shook his head, trying as much as he could not to believe it.

“No. It can't be true and you can't make me do that. If she wants a divorce, then she should say it herself.“

“It's the truth.“ The door flew open and Clara walked into the place.

“You should stop fussing already and sign the papers. I was busy when Juliet dropped the message. Do you realize that you have to pull me out of work for such a trivial matter?“ There was not even a single trace of emotion in her voice.

His eyes flickered, making everyone burst into laughter. And he joined them, full of bitterness and so much pain.

“So our marriage of four years is nothing but a trivial matter to you?” He chuckled with bitter sorrow, letting out his pains.

"Does my face make you want to punk that you didn't even want to see me?" Eddie's voice was laced with pain.

“I think that should be enough evidence for you.“ Juliet hissed with a trace of mockery in her voice.

Eddie paired at her, washed up by the emotions that weighed him down and he tried as much as he could not to show it.

“But why?“

“I know that you have helped me and everyone in the family so much by helping so with the money that we used to start this business but right now, I'm now the manager of the company and you work as a delivery man.

The gossip, and the fact that you are going to draw me back. I can't afford all of that, not when I want to be successful.“

“Are you trying to say I attract poverty?“ His eyes were lifted.

Clara could see the pain in his eyes and that made her feel a little bit guilty.

But letting him go was the best decision that she could ever make.

“Indeed. Wealth and time can inflate so much change than any other value in the world. But I want to ask you this question, did you ever love me?“

“Hey, stinker. With all these wise words. Aren't you supposed to be great?“

“I think that the only achievement that he can make in life is to be the king of punks.“ Nicolas laughed.

A bitter chuckle escaped from his mouth, one that expressed his inner despair.

“Love doesn't exist, it's what we make the most out of it. You were useful to me back then but no longer.“ Clara added.

The words shattered him to the core of his bones as he thought about everything that he had lost just to have her.

But it seemed as though the worst was yet to come.

Staring at her hands, he noticed that she already had a pre engagement ring on. His world was shattered.

“So it's true. The rumor about you and Gerow. Your perfect definition of a man.” He wimp in pain.

Clara wanted to object as it was just a mere jewelry but she decided otherwise. There was no need to explain anything to him, besides, Gerow already invited her for dinner and she accepted.

“You have the right to whatever you think. I don't think I should care.” She responded, her emotions gradually drafting but she was able to hold her stand.

“I'm not going to cross the slim line between love and obsession. Night pavilion it is. I will be there.“

“Finally, he is leaving already.“ Juliet hissed.

“Before you go. Have this. It's the sum of a million naira. Now we are even.“ Clara added but Lady Gaga's face twisted with a frown

“Why give him such an amount of money?“ Juliet frowned but Clara was firm with her decision

Eddie stared at the money and back at her. "Nicolas would do a better job and squandering that." He replied.

Eddie soon walked out of the building with his heart weighed down with pain.

The words that had been spoken to him rang in his ears.

“What do you think that you lost?“

Another sorrowful chuckled brewed out from his mouth as he thought about his past as the son of a billionaire, though he did not know about his father's Net Worth, he knew that he was really rich.

Sighs.

His father got married to his Korean mother who he could describe as the ray of the sun not because of love but for business.

And each time of his life, he lived to see his mother regret until her death. She gave him a silver necklace.

He never loved and wanted to see for himself and when his father also wanted to match him, he opposed getting married to Clara instead.

And for her sudden success, his name has always been the reason behind all of it.

'Maybe father was right.'

Just then, his phone made a beeping sound. It was a strange number and the thoughts of who it was crossed his mind.

“Hey Eddie.“ The voice that he could never forget skimmed through.

It was his father's assistant, Mr. Diego.

'Wonder how he got my contacts.'

“Your father is dying and you are the only one who can help him out now.“ He sounded urgent and frightened.

The sun was setting behind thick clouds when Eddie drove into the industrial district. The sleek glass towers of downtown gave way to old concrete buildings and empty warehouses. He parked his car two blocks away and walked the rest of the way, dressed in jeans and a plain jacket, nothing that would draw attention.Calix Therapeutics. The name was barely visible on the faded sign outside the building. According to Thomas's research, the company had gone bankrupt eight months ago, right after John Mark's acquisition. But the building was still standing, still locked up tight.Eddie pulled out an old ID badge - one of dozens Thomas had found in a data breach from the company's final weeks. Most companies would have deactivated these immediately, but in the chaos of bankruptcy, small details got forgotten. The badge reader beeped green, and Eddie slipped inside. The facility was mostly stripped clean. Equipment gone, files erased, anything valuable removed. But Eddie had learned that peo

The next morning, Eddie woke to the sound of his phone buzzing with news alerts. The city was stirring, and beneath the surface, things were already shifting. The roundtable had been kept quiet in the mainstream media, but people who mattered were talking. And now his name was attached to whatever was coming next.He made coffee and sat down at his computer, pulling up the footage from last night. The micro-camera in his cufflink had caught everything - every word, every glance, every nervous twitch. He'd learned a long time ago that the most important conversations happened in the spaces between words.Eddie replayed Dante's dismissive remarks, watching how the man's eyes never quite matched his concerned tone. Then he focused on the other faces around the table. Most had reacted predictably when Sophia mentioned Blackworm - shock, fear, disbelief. But there was one man who had caught his attention.Dr. John Mark, pharmaceutical magnate from Southeast Asia. When Sophia had said the w

  • Chapter 70

Eddie stood in his living room, holding Sophia's letter, the city's quiet hum drifting through his windows. He read the note again, her elegant handwriting sharp against the cream paper. "You're not invisible anymore. You might as well sit at the table."He set the letter down and walked to the window. The streetlights below cast long shadows, and he could see people moving through the night, unaware that their world was about to shift. His anonymity was gone. Whatever quiet life he'd built was over now."Shit," he said to himself, running a hand through his hair. "Here we go."The next morning brought chaos. Eddie's phone buzzed non-stop with calls from reporters, bloggers, and people he'd never heard of. He ignored them all and made coffee, scrolling through the headlines on his laptop."Mystery Investor Linked to Young Empire." "Sophia Young's Secret Partner." "Who Is Eddie Maxwell?"Thomas called around noon, his voice high with panic. "Eddie, they're saying you're some kind of hi

  • Chapter 69

Eddie walked out of the banquet hall beside Sophia, feeling like a thousand pairs of eyes were burning holes in his back. The night air hit his face, cold and sharp, but it wasn't as cold as the silence between them. Behind them, he could hear the whispers starting up like a wildfire. "Well, that was something," Sophia said, her voice calm as always. Eddie didn't respond. He kept walking, but he could feel the crowd inside still watching through the windows. Clara was probably still standing there with her mouth open, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. And Gerow? Eddie could picture his face right now - that fake smile finally cracking. "You want a ride?" Sophia asked when they reached the parking area. "I'm good, I'll get an uber" Eddie said, pulling out his phone to call a cab. But before he could dial, he heard footsteps behind them. A group of people had followed them outside, phones already out, some trying to look casual while they took pictures. "Eddie," Sop
