Chapter 4: What Was Still His

Henry brought Adam into Weston Group through the underground parking lot instead of the main entrance. The moment they stepped out of the car, Henry moved half a step behind him out of old habit, only remembering seconds later that Adam had specifically warned him not to make his return obvious.

Adam noticed and gave him a sideways glance. “Walk normally, Old Fox.”

Henry cleared his throat and moved beside him. “Some habits are difficult to change, Young Master.”

“I also told you to stop calling me that.”

“Yes, Young Master.”

Adam looked at him while Henry pretended not to notice.

The private elevator opened after Henry used his access card and fingerprint. As the doors closed, Adam watched the numbers rise silently. Five years ago, Weston Group had occupied three rented floors in an average commercial building. The company had been growing quickly, but even Adam had not expected to return and find an entire tower carrying its name.

Henry noticed where he was looking. “It changed quite a bit.”

“That’s one way to put it.”

“I told you before. You built Weston on a strong foundation. All I did was make sure the wrong people never got their hands on it.”

Adam glanced at him. “Owning an entire tower is your idea of keeping it safe?”

Henry smiled. “I had five years, young master.”

Adam said nothing more, but Henry caught the faint approval in his eyes.

Weston had originally been Adam’s answer to the Carter family. He had grown tired of watching relatives fight over everything attached to their surname. Every profitable business became another argument. His uncles smiled across dinner tables while quietly sabotaging one another, and his cousins competed for influence they had done nothing to earn.

Adam eventually decided he wanted something the Carter family could not touch.

He used his own money and connections to establish Weston Group, deliberately keeping it outside the family structure. Only his grandfather and Henry knew he was the real owner. By the time of his accident, Weston had already started attracting attention, but it had still been far from becoming what stood before him now.

The elevator opened onto the executive floor.

It was late enough that most employees had already left, and Henry deliberately avoided the few who remained. He led Adam into the chairman’s office and closed the door behind them.

Adam looked around once.

Henry gestured toward the large desk. “It’s yours.”

“You’ve been sitting there for five years.”

“Only because someone had to protect your seat.”

Adam gave him a flat look. “You’re getting sentimental again.”

Henry chuckled. “Allow an old man his moment. I spent five years thinking I might never see you walk into this place.”

Adam’s expression remained calm, but he did not mock him again.

Henry moved toward a cabinet and removed several folders. “After you were declared dead, your grandfather wanted me to return permanently to the capital. I refused. The public records were adjusted because we couldn’t keep a dead man appearing as an active executive, but the private holding structure was never touched. Weston still belongs to you exactly as it did five years ago.”

Adam sat behind the desk and opened the first file.

Revenue reports, acquisitions, new subsidiaries and investments followed one after another. Weston had expanded into industries Adam had only been considering before his accident, and several competitors he remembered were now far below it.

He flipped through another report before looking at Henry.

“You did well.”

Henry immediately straightened slightly.

Coming from anyone else, the words might have sounded ordinary but coming from Adam, they were enough.

“Thank you, Young Master.”

Adam sighed. “Henry.”

“I heard you the first time.”

“Apparently not.”

Henry smiled before continuing. “Now that you’re back, I can arrange a meeting with the senior executives tomorrow. Most of them have never met the real owner. There will be some confusion at first, but once I explain....”

“No.”

Henry stopped and Adam closed the folder.

“Nothing changes publicly or internally.”

“You don’t even want the senior executives to know?”

“No.”

Henry frowned. “Young Master, I understand hiding from the Carter family, but this company belongs to you. At least the people running it should know their real boss has returned.”

Adam leaned back.

“And what happens after that? One executive tells his wife. Another mentions something to an old friend in the capital. By the end of the week, someone starts wondering why Weston suddenly has a mysterious owner who returned suddenly.”

Henry went quiet.

Adam continued, his tone calm. “Five years ago, someone put enough thought into killing me that even you couldn’t find them afterward. I’m not going to announce myself because I got impatient after one month.”

Henry slowly nodded.

“You remain chairman. Everyone reports to you exactly as before. If something requires my decision, bring it to me privately.”

“And you stay in the shadows.”

“For now.”

Henry studied him for a moment and then smiled faintly. “You really haven’t changed much.”

Adam raised an eyebrow.

“You were always happiest when everyone else thought they understood your plan.”

Adam’s mouth curved slightly. “People make mistakes when they think they understand you.”

Henry shook his head. “There he is.”

He opened the secure company system and entered several codes before turning the screen around. Adam’s authority was still there, suspended but untouched.

Founder.

Primary controller.

Final approval authority.

Henry placed a security token beside him. “Your grandfather insisted we preserve everything. I agreed. Enter your old code.”

Adam picked up the token and entered the sequence from memory.

The system accepted it instantly and his dormant authority returned.

For the past month, his old life had existed only in memories. Now, for the first time, Adam had physically taken something back.

Henry lowered his head slightly. “Welcome back, Young Master.”

Adam gave him a look.

Henry smiled. “That one was necessary.”

Adam ignored him and started checking recent company activity.

Several minutes later, one name caught his attention.

Turner Group.

“Bring me their proposal.”

Henry paused. “Your wife’s company?”

“My wife submitted it herself.”

That immediately interested Henry. He called his assistant and requested the rejected Turner Group proposal without explaining why. Once it arrived, Henry personally collected it from the door before handing it to Adam.

Adam opened the file.

His expression gradually became more serious.

Emma’s proposal was good, not perfect, but practical. Her numbers were realistic, her timeline made sense and she had clearly accounted for Turner Group’s financial limitations instead of hiding them behind exaggerated projections.

Henry noticed his silence. “I assume she impressed you.”

“She did.”

Henry took the proposal and skimmed through several pages. “Then why was this rejected?”

Adam tapped the company profile.

“Because whoever screened it saw Turner Group before they saw the proposal.”

Henry understood.

Turner Group’s recent instability and weakening reputation would have been enough for a junior screening team to discard the application before it reached anyone important.

Henry placed the file down. “I’ll have the contract prepared.”

“No.”

Henry looked up but Adam remained calm.

“Arrange a meeting for tomorrow.”

Henry stared at him for a second. “You’re making your own wife negotiate?”

“I’m giving her the opportunity she should have received. What happens after that depends on her.”

“You could solve everything with one signature.”

“I could.”

Henry waited.

Adam looked back at Emma’s proposal. “But she spent weeks preparing this because she wants to prove she can do it. I won’t turn her work into a gift from her husband.”

Henry smiled slowly. “You really do love her.”

Adam lifted his eyes.

Henry immediately became interested in the file again. “Meeting tomorrow. Understood, Young Master.”

Adam almost told him to stop again, then decided it was pointless.

Henry opened another drawer and slid a black card toward him.

“What’s this?”

“Your private account.”

“I have money.”

Henry stared at Adam’s clothes and Adam stared back.

Henry wisely avoided commenting. “Your investments continued growing while you were gone. Nobody touched the principal. Take it.”

Adam picked up the card and turned it between his fingers. Five years ago, money like this had meant very little to him. Now he immediately remembered Emma refusing things she liked because there were bills to pay.

He slipped the card into his pocket and Henry looked satisfied.

Adam stood, ready to leave, then stopped near the door.

“Old Fox.”

Henry immediately heard the change in his tone.

Adam turned back.

“The accident. You investigated it.”

Henry’s expression became serious.

“I never stopped, Young Master.”

Adam’s eyes cooled.

“What did you find?”

Henry remained quiet for a moment before answering.

“Not enough to identify the mastermind, but enough to confirm one thing.”

Adam waited as Henry looked directly at him.

“Someone very close to you betrayed you.”

Several poor investments and mounting debts had left the business struggling, and the owner had already been quietly searching for a buyer before creditors started asking harder questions.More importantly, Zane Ford visited the place regularly.Adam sat across from Henry in the back of the black sedan, going through the report while the city moved past the tinted windows. Henry had come personally because Adam had made it clear that nothing concerning the Ford family should pass through normal Weston channels.“Zane spends most of his time at the private card tables,” Henry explained. “He likes expensive games, but Jason watches him closely. Chapter 9: The Weak LinkBy ten in the morning, Emma already knew the supplier pulling out was not an isolated problem. The first call came from one of Turner Group’s longtime material suppliers, informing her that they could no longer continue under the existing agreement. Before she could properly deal with that, another company suddenly demanded new payment terms that would put even more strain on Turner Group’s finances, then the bank called to inform them that a credit arrangement they had been expecting for one of their ongoing projects had been placed under additional review. No rejection, no clear explanation, just an unexpected delay that could easily cause problems if it dragged on.Emma sat behind her desk staring at the reports in front of her. Jason had not wasted time. His three-day warning had barely begun, yet he was already pressing Turner Group from several directions at once, carefully enough that none of the problems could destroy the company alone but together the

We were just discussing something important.”Jason glanced at the contract still lying on the table. “I heard Turner Group finally secured something from Weston.”Robert’s face brightened again. “Yes. Where is the Weston contract?”Before Emma could answer, Robert laughed again.“Mother, why bother asking? Look at their faces. Whoever planned it knew your exact route, what time you would leave and how many men would be with you that night. Only a handful of people had access to all of that.”Adam opened the file and began reading.Henry remained standing across from him. “Your driver changed the route less than twenty minutes before the crash. He claimed there had been an accident on the main road, but when I checked afterward, no such accident had been reported.”Adam’s gaze hardened slightly. “Where is he?”“Gone. He disappeared less than two days after you vanished. His accounts were emptied, his apartment was abandoned and every
