Chapter 18: The Ice Cream War

The ice cream truck guy handed over the monster cone like he was used to serving naked people in cosmic parks every Tuesday. Chocolate fudge piled high, whipped cream swirling like a tornado, cherry the size of a golf ball wobbling on top. The boy took it with both hands, eyes bigger than the cherry. He took one lick. Then another. Then a full-face dive. Chocolate smeared from forehead to chin.

Alex watched him and felt something weird in his chest again. Not the usual power rush or cock-throb. Just… calm. Actual calm. Sun warm on his shoulders. Grass tickling his bare feet. His family scattered around eating their own cones like this was the most normal afternoon ever.

Lila sat cross-legged beside the boy, licking strawberry slow and teasing. “Kid, you got more chocolate on your face than in the cone.”

The boy grinned through the mess. “It’s strategic camouflage.”

Elena snorted mid-bite of her mint chip. “Strategic for what? Becoming a walking dessert?”

Ronan leaned against the truck, axe propped beside him like a casual walking stick. He took a huge bite of rocky road. “If we’re fighting gods later, at least we’ll smell delicious when we die.”

The sister licked caramel off her fingers. “Speak for yourself. I plan on winning and then riding Alex on this truck hood while everyone watches.”

Sarah raised her hand like she was in class. “Seconded. And I call shotgun on the sprinkles.”

His mother sat quiet on the grass. Vanilla cone melting slow in her hand. She kept glancing at the boy like she was afraid he’d disappear if she blinked too long. Every few seconds she reached over and wiped chocolate off his cheek with her thumb. Then licked it clean. Soft smile every time.

Alex finished his own cone—double chocolate chunk because why not—and wiped his hands on his thighs. Looked around at everyone.

“So,” he said. “We just beat an army of evil copies, saved the kid, kept Mom alive, told the old man to fuck off… and now we’re eating ice cream in a magic park. Anybody else feel like this is the calm before an even dumber storm?”

The boy raised his hand. Chocolate dripping down his arm. “Me! I feel like something bad is gonna happen right after I finish this cherry.”

Lila laughed. “Smart kid. Murphy’s Law probably applies to multiverses too.”

Right on cue the sky rippled again. Not a big dramatic crack this time. Just a little shimmer like heat off pavement. Then a small portal opened. Tennis-ball sized. Red light leaking out.

Everyone froze mid-lick.

A tiny voice came through. High-pitched. Annoyed.

“Really? Ice cream? You’re sitting around eating frozen cow juice while the harvest clock is ticking?”

A small red imp popped out. No bigger than a house cat. Horns. Tail. Bat wings. Little pitchfork that looked more like a barbecue skewer. It hovered in front of Alex, arms crossed.

Alex raised an eyebrow. “You’re kidding me.”

The imp pointed the pitchfork. “Do I look like I’m kidding? I’m the official reminder demon. Low-level. Underpaid. Overworked. And currently very cranky because you people won’t die properly.”

Elena pointed her pistol casual. “Say the word, boss. I’ll turn him into red mist.”

The imp squeaked. “Hey! Union rules! No shooting the messenger!”

The boy tilted his head. “Are you evil?”

The imp puffed up. “I’m chaotic neutral with strong leanings toward petty revenge. But mostly I just want my coffee break.”

Alex sighed. “What’s the message?”

The imp unrolled a tiny scroll. Cleared its throat.

“By order of the remaining harvest council, former Apex candidate Alex Kane is hereby notified that mercy is not a valid strategy. The spare must be consumed within the next solar cycle or the entire family unit will be reclassified as harvestable biomass. Also, the ice cream truck is a temporal anomaly and technically stolen property. Return it or face late fees.”

The boy hugged his cone tighter. “No! My cherry!”

Alex looked at the imp. “Tell your council they can kiss my ass.”

The imp blinked. “Literally or figuratively?”

“Both. And tell them if they want the kid, they come get him themselves. I’ll be waiting. With sprinkles.”

The imp scribbled something on the scroll. “Noted. Extremely noted. Also… can I have a lick of that chocolate fudge? It smells divine.”

Lila held out her cone. “Here. One lick. Then fuck off.”

The imp darted in. Tiny tongue flicked out. Took the tiniest taste. Eyes rolled back. “Ohhh… that’s the good stuff.”

It popped back through the portal. Scroll tucked under its arm.

Portal closed.

Everyone stared at the spot.

Sarah broke the silence. “So… we just bribed a demon with ice cream?”

Elena shrugged. “Worked better than bullets.”

The boy licked his cone again. “Best day ever.”

Alex ruffled his hair. “Yeah. Best day.”

His mother stood up slow. Walked over. Put her arms around both of them.

“I never thought I’d get this,” she whispered. “All of you. Together. Eating ice cream like normal people.”

Alex kissed her temple. “We’re not normal. But we’re ours.”

The sky stayed quiet for another minute.

Then another ripple. Bigger this time.

No portal.

Just a voice. Everywhere at once.

Old. Tired. But angry.

“You really think sugar stops fate?”

The ice cream truck shook.

The music skipped.

The truck guy’s mustache twitched.

He looked up. Eyes glowing red.

“Time’s up, folks.”

The truck doors slammed open.

Inside: not ice cream tubs.

Weapons. Glowing. Sharp.

The guy stepped out. Body stretching taller. Skin cracking like porcelain. Revealing metal underneath.

Not human.

Never was.

He grinned. Teeth like knives.

“Harvest council sends regards. And a repossession notice.”

Alex stood. Pushed the boy behind him.

The women rose. Weapons ready. Bodies tense.

Sarah licked the last of her cone off her fingers. “Guess playtime’s over.”

Elena cocked her pistol. “Finally.”

The boy clutched Alex’s leg. “Brother…?”

Alex looked down. Smiled.

“Finish that cherry, kid.”

Then looked up at the metal man.

“Buddy… you just ruined a perfect afternoon.”

He cracked his knuckles.

“Now I’m gonna ruin your day.”

The metal man laughed.

Then charged.

Chapter 22: How the System Actually Works The wrecked truck bed had become their temporary palace. Sunlight poured through the ripped roof like lazy gold fingers, warming sticky skin and half-melted ice cream puddles. Alex lay in the center of the padded floor, back against a crumpled freezer door. Legs stretched out. Cock resting soft against his thigh for the moment. The women formed a loose, lazy circle around him—some sitting, some lying, all touching him in small ways. A hand on his knee. Fingers tracing his abs. A head on his shoulder. The air smelled like sex, sugar, and the faint metallic tang of spilled oil. The boy was still napping under the tree with his mother. Ronan stood watch nearby, axe planted in the grass like a flag. Everyone else stayed quiet for once. Breathing slow. Bodies loose. The afterglow hung thick. Lila broke the silence first. She propped herself on one elbow beside Alex. Naked breasts brushing his arm. “Okay. We’ve fought robots, fucked copies, save

Alex lay flat on his back in the middle of the padded cargo space. Arms spread wide. Chest rising slow. Every muscle still humming from the fight and the fucking that followed. His cock rested heavy against his thigh, shiny and spent but already twitching every time one of the women shifted beside him. Lila curled against his left side. Head on his shoulder. One leg thrown over his hip. Her fingers traced lazy circles around his nipple while she caught her breath. “I think I pulled something in my thigh,” she murmured. “Worth it.” Elena sprawled on his right. Face tucked into the crook of his neck. One hand resting possessively on his abs. “You pulled everything in my pussy. Also worth it.” The sister knelt between his legs. Hair messy. Lips swollen. She leaned forward and dragged her tongue

Interest rate: your souls.”Alex cracked his neck. “Buddy, you just ruined chocolate fudge for a kid. That’s worse than soul-stealing. That’s personal.”The boy peeked from behind Alex’s leg, cone still clutched like a grenade. Chapter 17: Ice Cream and Infinite TroubleThe core went quiet for the first time in what felt like forever. No rumbling thrones. No exploding portals. No creepy old men dropping wisdom bombs. The kid's head rested against his chest, tiny fingers playing with one of the glowing tattoos that still hadn't faded."Brother?" the boy whispered."Yeah, kid?""Can we really get ice cream now?"Alex chuckled. Naked skin still flushed from everything. She r
