The neon haze of the lower district hung heavy like a wet blanket, smelling of ozone and rotting refuse. Ren adjusted the strap of his courier bag, his sneakers slapping rhythmically against the slick pavement. He didn't mind the solitude. In a city that never slept, the midnight shift was the only time he could actually think.

"Almost there," he muttered to himself, checking his wrist-link. "Twenty minutes to the drop-off. If I make it, that’s another fifty credits in the bank. Maybe I can finally afford that decent synthetic coffee tomorrow."

Suddenly, the air pressure shifted. A low, vibrating hum rattled the trash cans nearby, and the streetlights overhead flickered into a harsh, crimson strobe.

"What the hell?" Ren skidded to a halt, his hand instinctively moving to the box in his bag. "Is that a red moon? That’s not supposed to happen until next week."

A deafening crash echoed from the alleyway ahead. Metal twisted, sparks showered the damp ground, and a woman hurtled through the brick wall like a ragdoll. She landed hard, sliding toward Ren’s feet. She was draped in tattered, iridescent robes, her skin glowing with a faint, dying luminescence.

"Hey! Lady! Are you okay?" Ren sprinted forward, dropping his bag.

Elara coughed, a spray of dark, viscous fluid painting the ground. Her eyes, violet and wide with terror, locked onto his. "Run… you idiot… they’re… they’re still coming."

"I’m not leaving you here!" Ren knelt, his heart hammering against his ribs. He grabbed her shoulder, trying to hoist her up. "Who did this to you? Are they still behind you?"

"Shadow-stalkers," she rasped, her grip tightening on his forearm with unnatural strength. "They don't leave witnesses. Please… just leave me."

"Shut up, you're not dying on my watch," Ren snapped, his adrenaline spiking as he heard the guttural, grinding sound of heavy footsteps approaching from the rubble. "You’re way too light. You eat at all this year?"

"I’m a refugee, not a tourist, you jerk," she wheezed, a weak, broken laugh bubbling up. "Go!"

Two shadows detached themselves from the darkness. They weren't human. They were tall, elongated silhouettes with blades for fingers and eyes that burned like cold embers. They moved with a predatory grace that defied physics.

"Ren, duck!" Elara screamed.

Ren didn't have time to process the warning. A razor-sharp claw slashed through the air where his head had been a second before. He dove, dragging Elara with him, but the second attacker was faster. A serrated blade plunged through Ren’s side, pinning him to the damp alley floor.

"Agh! Damn it!" Ren choked, blood pooling in his throat.

"No!" Elara scrambled over, ignoring her own mortal wounds. She pressed her hands against the blade protruding from his side. "You fool! Why did you have to play the hero?"

"Habit," Ren gasped, his vision blurring. "Usually ends better than this."

"It’s too late," she whispered, her voice trembling. "They want my essence. If they take it… they become gods. I can’t let them."

She leaned in, her face inches from his. The world was spinning, the sounds of the approaching monsters fading into a dull roar. "Listen to me," she said, her voice frantic and intimate. "I’m going to give you a choice. Die here, or take what’s mine. It’s going to hurt, but it’s the only way you survive."

"What are you… talking about?" Ren felt the cold creeping into his limbs.

"Just bite!" she cried, pressing her wrist to his bloody, split lip. "Do it, Ren! Now!"

Desperation, fueled by the primal urge to survive, took over. Ren bit down, his teeth sinking into her skin. It wasn't blood that flowed into him; it was liquid fire. It surged down his throat, searing his veins, burning away the agonizing chill of his wound.

"Good," she whispered, her body turning to gray ash in his arms. "Remember me."

The monsters paused. They hissed, their heads snapping toward Ren as they sensed the shift in the air.

"What did you do?" one of the shadows screeched, its voice sounding like grinding glass.

Ren didn't answer. He couldn't. His body was folding in on itself, his muscles tearing and knitting back together in a violent, rhythmic cycle. Every fiber of his being felt like it was being fed through a meat grinder.

"Stop that," Ren groaned, arching his back as his bones cracked and expanded. "It feels like… like I’m being forged."

The monsters lunged, their blades descending in a lethal arc. Ren’s eyes snapped open. They weren't brown anymore. They were slits of burning, vertical gold. He caught the blades with his bare hands, the steel shrieking as it bent against his newly hardened skin.

"Not today," Ren hissed, his voice deeper, vibrating with a guttural resonance.

A blue, translucent screen flickered into existence before his vision.

[ System Alert: Demon Bloodline: 1% Awakening. ]

[ Vitality Stabilized. Human heart-rate suppressed. ]

[ Warning: Predator senses detected your presence. ]

Ren looked at the monsters, his tongue flicking out to taste the air. He could smell their fear. He could hear their racing, mechanical pulses. He looked down at his blood-soaked shirt, then back at the shadows.

"So," Ren muttered, a wicked, jagged grin spreading across his face as he stood, his wounds knitting shut before their eyes. "Do you guys have a death wish, or are you just clumsy?"

The shadows hesitated, their frames flickering.

"You're not a courier," one hissed, backing away.

"I’m a guy who just wanted to finish his shift," Ren replied, his fingers elongating into sharp, black talons. "But now? I think I’ve got some overtime to handle."

As he stepped forward, the alleyway shuddered. Ren felt a hunger—a deep, hollow, and violent craving that had nothing to do with food and everything to do with the monsters standing before him.

"Run," Ren whispered, his shadow elongating on the wall behind him until it resembled a gargantuan, winged beast. "Because if you don't, I’m going to tear you apart until there’s nothing left but those shitty blades."

The lead monster shrieked, a sound of pure, unadulterated terror, and turned to flee.

"Too late," Ren murmured.

He didn't walk; he blurred. In the blink of an eye, he was across the alley, his claws buried in the entity’s chest. The red moon overhead pulsed brighter, bathing the scene in a macabre light.

Ren looked up at the moon, then back at the system alert that refused to fade from his vision.

[ Quest Update: Survive the Night. ]

[ Current Status: Awakening level rising… ]

"This is going to be one hell of a long night," he chuckled to the empty alley, his voice sounding nothing like his own anymore.

He turned his gaze toward the end of the street, where the shadows of dozens more creatures were beginning to emerge from the darkness of the city. He wasn't scared. He was hungry.

"Come and get it, then," he dared them, his teeth gleaming in the dark.

The screen flickered one last time, turning a deep, warning crimson.

[ SYSTEM ERROR: Biological limit broken. Power level detected: Dangerous. ]

Ren gripped his fists, his heartbeat no longer rhythmic, but a slow, heavy thrum of something ancient and terrible. He took a step forward, the pavement cracking under his weight.

"Let's see what else I can do," he whispered, as the first wave of hunters descended.

Kael’s blade hissed, heating up until it glowed white, but Ren’s hand remained steady, his skin absorbing the thermal energy into his own surging reserves."You really want to keep doing this, Kael?" Ren spat, his voice vibrating with the strain. "The air is getting thin. You hear that?"Kael yanked the blade back, stumbling, his tactical goggles cracked. "Shut up. That thing above us. It’s an anomaly. It doesn't belong.""It belongs to the city just as much as you do," Ren laughed, a jagged, broken sound. "You're not the only one with secrets, metal-head."Before Kael could recover, a series of high-pitched thuds rippled through the street. Black-clad shock troopers descended from the rooftops, their rifles leveled not at Ren
