Chapter Forty-Five

The void was tearing like old cloth.

Jax could feel every rip in his own bones. Light and shadow had met in a place where time did not move, and all the time that had been locked away for a year was rushing back at once. Rice bags turned gray, then dust. Crates cracked. The whole dark sky of his space shook, and long white seams opened across it like lightning in reverse.

"The lake!" Mira shouted over the roar. "It is going to break everything!"

"Then I will pour it out!"

Chapter Forty-FiveThe void was tearing like old cloth.Jax could feel every rip in his own bones. Light and shadow had met in a place where time did not move, and all the time that had been locked away for a year was rushing back at once. Rice bags turned gray, then dust. Crates cracked. The whole dark sky of his space shook, and long white seams opened across it like lightning in reverse."The lake!" Mira shouted over the roar. "It is going to break everything!""Then I will pour it out!"He lifted both arms. Above him, the white door he had opened was already wide as a field, and through it he could see a gray, bruised morning sky and the black cloud sitting over the dead city. Far below that, tiny as pins, he could see the broken towers of a place he used to live.Drax had said it himself. Open the sky."Here is your sky," Jax whispered. The lake began to rise.It lifted off the floor of the void like a great silver sheet, all of it, black gone to white, white gone to clea

Chapter Forty-Four"Do not come closer," Mira said. "It is a trap. It is always a trap.""I know.""Then why are you swimming toward it?""Because I am not good at plans," said Jax.He pushed off the last crate and drifted across the gray air toward her, the six flasks glowing on his back. The cold was terrible. Each breath tasted of metal, and his power was a candle that gave only a flicker. But the light from the flasks pressed the dark back a little, so that around him there was a soft white bubble, and in that bubble he could still think.Mira was sitting on a floating pile of rice bags at the edge of the black lake. Her hands were chained in front of her with thick black cuffs, and a long chain ran from them into the water. Her face was thinner. There were dark rings under her eyes, and the silver of her hair had turned black at the tips, as if it had been dipped in ink."Eleven days," she said again, and her voice cracked. "He told me. Every hour out there is half a day in

Chapter Forty-Three"I cannot open it."Jax said it for the fifth time, kneeling in the school yard in the gray dawn with both hands pressed against the cold circle on the grass. His nose was bleeding. His knuckles were bleeding. He had been trying all night, and the humming in his chest that had never failed him since March 14 was thin and tired like a radio in a storm."The door is locked from the inside," said Chen. He knelt beside him with a lantern and a small black notebook. "Eclipse has sealed it, the way it sealed your collar. You cannot push through a lock made of shadow.""Then I will pull it apart with my hands.""You will kill yourself.""Then I will die trying," Jax said, and stopped, because he heard how it sounded, and because Finn was standing at the edge of the lamplight in his yellow hat, with his old shoulders bent."Jax," said Finn. "Look at me."Jax looked up."I have known you since you were seventeen. You carried a box twice your size and you said you di

  • Three Meters

Chapter Forty-TwoDawnhill went silent.Five hundred people stood in the yard with buckets and hoses and kitchen knives, and none of them moved. The only sound was the soft crackle of ice spreading across the grass. Drax stood in the middle of the green, with the Howler behind him like a tower, and looked around at the little town like a man admiring a house he had just bought."It is nice," he said. "Very clean. I like the school. I like the lamp on the wall." His black eyes moved across the crowd, and stopped. "And is that the little boy who counts?"Leo stood at the front of the crowd, holding Rex. His whole body was shaking, but his chin was up."Do not look at him," said Jax, stepping in front of the boy. "Look at me.""There he is." Drax grinned. "The god of the north hill. In a jacket with a hole in it.""Get off my grass.""Your grass?" Drax lifted a boot and let it fall, and a ring of gray spread out from his heel like ink in water. "Three meters, boy. Wherever I stand

Chapter Forty-OneThe Door in the ClassroomThe classroom was freezing.Jax felt it the moment he burst through the door, a cold that bit his face and fogged his breath. Little desks lay overturned. Paper drawings floated in the air like dead leaves. And in the middle of the floor, where Leo's chalk map of Dawnhill had been, stood a black door.It was not a clean door like the ones Jax made. This one was ragged at the edges, thick with dripping black frost, and it hummed so loudly the windows were shaking. Around it the wooden floor had gone gray and soft. A crooked line of black cracks ran up the wall like lightning."Everyone out!" Mira shouted behind him. "Out! Garrick, take the babies!""Jax," said Chen, from the doorway. "Do not use your power. Not near that. It will feel it.""I know."Something moved inside the door.A long gray hand came out first, and then an arm, all knuckles and cracked skin. It pressed against the frame and pushed, and the black edges bent like ru

  • What Lila Ward Wrote

Chapter FortyBy noon there were nine cracks on the hill.Dr. Chen counted them with a piece of chalk. One by the storeroom. One by the well. Three along the south wall, thin as spider silk, glowing a little in the daylight. Each one wept a single black drop every few minutes, and wherever the drop landed, the grass turned gray in a circle the size of a coin."They follow Jax," Chen said. He had not slept. His glasses were crooked and his eyes were red. "Wherever he walks, a new one opens. Like the lake is looking for him.""Then I will stand still," said Jax."It does not work like that.""I know. I was joking.""It was not funny," said Mira, and she pulled the collar of his jacket straight. They had told the council. Jax decided it at dawn, in the dining hall, with the doors closed. He had learned the hard way what happens to a man who keeps secrets from people he loves. So Garrick sat with his big arms crossed, and Teacher Park cleaned his glasses on his sleeve, and Lina hel
