“Kai breathes intensely.” The arena’s soil was mixed with Kai’s blood. That pit was deep beneath the Ironspire Academy. It was located beyond the sterilized halls and gilded towers. Failures  were sent there as a punishment to fight for entertainment of nobles and elites.

The crowd shouted at the top of their voices. Their faces were a blur of academy students, professors, and nobles, each hiding behind a mask and they were all gathered for tonight’s illegal match.

At the center of the pit was Kai Draven. His shirt was torn, lip bleeding and hair clinging to his sweat-streaked face. Around his neck was a glowing red collar. Unbeknownst to Kai that it was a suppression ring that disabled any latent aura or system-activated ability.

Kai was at Level 0 which was also known as Trash and Systemless. He was the only student in the entire Ironsphire academy with no combat code or ascension path.

Across from him was a fierce opponent who was snickering and flexing his gauntlets. His name is Varyn Calderon and he is at Level 3. Varyn was the proud son of a council lord. Aura glimmered faintly around him which was a visible sign of system activation.

“Try not to die too fast, trash,” Varyn grinned, his voice echoed by the arena’s mic enchantments. “I want the others to see how long a roach twitches.”

The crowd roared with laughter.

Kai didn't respond. He couldn’t. Every breath enthralled out of his nostrils and he was nearing death. His ribs were bruised from yesterday’s public beating.

A countdown rune etched itself into the air.

[Combat Initiation Countdown: 3... 2... 1]

Varyn charged at Kai to finish him off.

Kai stood strong by moving on instinct and he doged leftwards, but he was not fast enough. Varyn’s  fist slammed into his ribs and slammed against the arena wall.

“BAM!” Kai's hit against the wall echoed throughout the arena. He coughed blood and fell to the ground. His eyes went blurry and he was barely able to lift himself.

‘I am going to definitely die.’ Kai admitted to his life ending that moment and the flicker of his miserable life appeared in his vision. He had lost all hope of survival. Maybe the Ironsphire academy wasn't for him afterall.

‘Warning: Vital Signs Critical.’

Kai blinked as he heard that statement in his head.

“What?” He echoed, because he couldn't understand what was going on.

Kai felt cold sensation that tickled the back of his mind. A voice that was glitchy and fragmented whispered.

“Initiating... Ascension Protocol system... syncing... rejected host condition overridden... survival Is a must...”

An overwhelming pain went through his skull.

The world froze for a moment and the audience blurred. Varyn stood still with his mid-punch clenched, he felt his movement was trapped in some invisible pause.

As Kai thought of what could be happening. A holographic interface popped into view. It was cracked and pulsing with red light.

“Wow! What is that?” Kai used his last strenght to stretch forth his hand whether he would be able to reach it

But he heard a bright echo in his head.

‘SYSTEM UPLOAD COMPLETE

Welcome, Kai Draven.

Status: Emergency Override Activated.

Ascension Protocol: S-Class Detected.

Initializing Level 1 – Iron Awakening.’

As Kai finds it difficult to understand the mystery of what was going on, his body convulsed. A flood of immesaurable heat surged through his muscles and  knitted his tissues. Kai's heart rate became calm  and his mind suddenly focused.

Kai was surprised. He knew this was none of his doing.

The voice returned, clearer in his head.

“You have been discarded and branded as Trash. You have been denied. Let the Tyrant Rise.”

‘What is happening to me?’ Kai was confused and he couldn't even explain what was happening at that moment.

Time snapped back into motion.

Varyn that appeared to have frozen moved forward with an heavy punch.

Kai noticed a new body strength. And this time, he caught Varyn’s next punch.

The academic students echoed around the arena with surprise. They had thought that move was just Kai's normal moves that always result in nothing.

Kai stared into Varyn's shocked eyes. Varyn tried to get his hand out of Kai's grip. But it became very impossible. ‘How is he this strong all of a sudden?’ Varyn echoed with his heart throbbing really fast. He must not lose to Kai, a level 0 student. He inputted more force, but it was to no avail.

Kai squeezed his fist with a fierce gaze and he then drive a fist into Varyn’s gut. Varyn folded as he managed to get some air. His mouth let out thick saliva that was mixed with blood.

Kai delivered another punch to his face. And the third to Varyn's chest. The gauntlet cracked.

The cheering crowd suddenly went silent. They weren't expecting the outcome that was currently happening.

Many had thought that the arena would be the end of Kai.

Kai stood strong as Varyn’s knees weakened and he fell to the ground. Kai stood over the collapsed noble with his sweaty face. Kai was panting and his body was trembling but Varyn was conscious.

Kai lifted his hand and he gazed at it… ‘Where does this new strength come from?’ it was hard for him to believe.

As he thought of what could be happening, a new window blinked in front of him.

‘LEVEL UP: 1 - 2

New Skill Acquired, Iron Fist Technique Tier I

AP Gained: +25

Skill Tree Unlocked: Base Combat / Aura Deflection

System Node Unlocked: “Echo Memory: Unknown Origin Signature.’ The system echoed in Kai's head. He froze and his eyes thinned out.

But in the Ironsphire academy was a man up above. He had been viewing the battle in a private viewing box. A man in violet robes leaned forward with a shock.

His name is High Warden Thelor. He is secretly the overseer of the academics surveillance network. He watched with narrowed eyes.

“This shouldn’t be possible,” he whispered in disappointment.

Back in the pit, Kai raised his head to the crowd, blood still running down his jaw.

And he half-smiled.

The sound of iron against iron rang across the Vanguard base’s training field. Rows of recruits were lined up under the bright lights. The weapons in their hands were glinting under the gaze of instructors. Today was not just an ordinary drill. It was the Weapons proficiency trial, where each soldier demonstrated accuracy, speed, and composure under simulated battle condition. Scores would be posted for all to see and it would be forever etched into their record. For Kai, every eye was already watching. Not with respect yet but with expectation. Expectation that the so-called “scholar boy” would finally stumble.Torrin Blayk saw to that. The tall recruit leaned against the rack of firearms. A smirk tugged at his lips. His voice cut through the clamor with sharp mockery.“Don’t trip over your pen, Kai. This isn’t about your pretty notes, this is about real weapons. Tools for real soldiers.”Laughter rippled through the ranks.Another chimed in, emboldened by Torrin’s tone. “What’s t

  • Chapter 127: The Silent Blade

The simulation chamber sounded like a living beast. Its walls shift to mimic rough cliffs, ruined shacks that stretched through the barren field. It wasn’t how it all looked, the Vanguard base’s engineers had designed every inch to trap, break, and humiliate the overconfident. A single mistake meant lights blaring across the control deck and failure would be stamped in real time for everyone to see.Kai stepped through the reinforced gate with a calm that only invited more jeers.“Scholar-boy going to doodle his way past the enemy?” someone called.“Better keep your neat handwriting ready for when they write FAIL across your record!” another shouted, laughter rolling through the crowd.Kai didn’t flinch. His eyes, sharp beneath the dim chamber lights, focused on the terrain ahead. He flexed his fingers once with an almost imperceptible gesture.“DING!System Notification: Mission Active – “Survive infiltration undetected.”Bonus: Subdue Leader without alert raised. • Chapter 126: Shadow Assignment

The victory over Harlen Drex still hung in the air like smoke after a fire. The recruits at Vanguard base hadn’t stopped talking about it since Kai had dismantled the tall brawler in the front of the entire barracks. But instead of basking in the triumph, Kai stood silently in the commander’s chamber with a rigid posture and he maintained a steady gaze.Commander Draegon’s office walls were made of steel. Visible holographic maps flickering with zones of red and blue. Veteran officers surrounded the commander with unreadable expressions, as though Kai was another item on their endless list of calculations.“You showed adaptability in the duel,” Draegon said at last. His gravel voice cut through the low sound of the machinery. “But fighting one brute in front of recruits is different from surviving what lies beyond these walls. You will undergo a trial.”“A trial, sir?” Kai kept his voice neutral even though he was surprised. “Reconnaissance,” another officer spoke, adjusting his data

  • Chapter 125: The Duel Without Shadows

The training hall’s mats were stripped bare and they left only two figures under the harsh white lights. The recruits had crowded the railings. They had pressed shoulder to shoulder with whispers and jeers as anticipation thickened the atmosphere. On one side stood Harlen Drex. He was tall and whip-thin. His smirk was razor-sharp. He rolled his shoulder. He was full of the cocky swagger that had won him matches against slower recruits. On the other end stood Kai. He was silent and he maintained his dark and steady eyes. Just as stated, he made sure he didn't bring anyone along so they won't point his victory towards the direction. The instructors had permitted it. Duels like this in the vanguard base weren’t forbidden, and the commanders wanted to see how the scholar-boy would handle himself without his supposed crush.Harlen leaned forward. His eyes peered into the soul of Kai like a vulture. He parted his lips and his voice was carried across the hush. “Are you ready to show us

  • Chapter 124: The Unassisted Duel

The training chamber was still filled with the murmurs of other soldiers after Caz Brenner’s defeat. But the noise had shifted. Before, Kai was mocked, laughed at and scorned, but now, there was now murmuring, suspicion, and an uncomfortable weight about Kai since he had been knocking down even the most powerful among them. They kept wondering how he continued defeating each of them. Caz sat on the edge of the mat. He was rubbing his ribs with his face flushed red with humiliation. He glared at Kai but didn’t step forward again. All that was left within him was his pride that had been broken in front of everyone. He still flashed back to that moment of ridicule and despair. He then wondered how Kai managed to get him to keep silent in this manner. Then, he grinded his teeth. He thought Kai would fight him at that very moment. But Kai was ever silent. He grinded his teeth and clenched his fist even though he knew there was nothing he could do to fight Kai anymore. However, there wa

  • Chapter 123: Reversal

This was where reputations were made.Kai looked at the loosed strap and then tightened the straps of his training gloves. He made sure he a strict expression that will be majorly understandable for any one else. In a distance from him was Caz Brenner. He rolled up his shoulders as he kept smirking like a predator circling prey. The humiliation attempt in the showers still hung between them like a blade. Caz believed he still had the upper hand and that Kai’s balance was just pure luck even though his eyes were harsh to behold but he believed that it was not his skill. And today, he meant to prove it to everyone. The recruits circled the mat. They were a sea of hungry eyes
