The dead did not return all at once.

They came through small gates, a few at a time. A soldier appeared in a kitchen. A mother stepped from a garden. A child walked out of a mirror carrying a wooden horse.

Each return was different.

Some dead people wanted to stay. Some wanted to say goodbye. Some discovered that the living had changed beyond recognition. A few returned only long enough to ask the living to stop waiting.

The treaty created houses for them.

Kael visited the first on a winter mor

Aster finished the first atlas of the connected worlds. It contained four hundred roads, eighty-three temporary gates, eleven places that should not yet be visited, and one blank region where the maps refused to agree. He brought the atlas to Kael.“What should I write there?”Kael opened the blank page. The page showed a road ending at a question.“Leave it blank.”“That is not a map.”“It is an honest one.”Aster frowned, then wrote a note in the margin.UNFINISHED BY CHOICE.The atlas accepted it.The Cartographer's apprentice arrived with a new page. The Dredger brought a warning about a road that had begun eating signs. Leth brought a station report. Vale brought a list of faces he had found and names he had chosen not to borrow.Morrow brought nothing.“What are you carrying?” Elia asked.“A question.”“Which one?”Morrow looked toward the horizon.“Can a guardian protect without deciding?”Kael answered, “Not perfectly.”“That is not enough.”“It is enough to begin.”The group

  • Chapter 119 — The Name of Home

The man carrying the closed door traveled with Kael for seven days.He answered to no name. People called him Door-Man, Traveler, and Stranger. None of the names stayed. At each settlement, he asked whether he was allowed to return. Some people said yes. Some said no.Some asked him where he had been.He never knew.On the seventh day, they reached a house beside the river. The house had a blue roof and a garden of white flowers. An old woman waited on the step. The man stopped.“I know this place.”The woman looked at him.“You left.”“I did.”“You said you would return.”“I did.”“You are late.”He lowered the door from his back.“May I enter?”The woman did not answer immediately.Kael and Elia remained on the road. Seris stood near the river. Anja held the question bell. The old woman looked at the closed door.“What is behind it?”The man opened the door.Behind it was a room filled with every version of the house. A young woman. A child. A soldier. A man who had never left. All

  • Chapter 118 — The Roadkeepers’ Trial

The young hunters' first trial was not a monster hunt.It was a village that had disappeared from its map.The roadkeepers found the village at the edge of a valley. Houses stood empty. Fires burned without fuel. A bell rang in the square, but no one answered. The hunters wanted to enter.Their witness stopped them.“Ask whether the village wants us.”They rang the question bell. The empty houses answered with different sounds. One door opened. Another slammed shut. A third spoke with a child's voice.“We are not a village anymore.”The hunters argued about the meaning. The fighter wanted to search. The healer wanted to wait. The mapmaker wanted to record the ruins. The questioner asked what each choice might harm.At sunset, the empty village began to move. The houses rolled toward the valley. The people inside were not missing. They had become part of the structures because no one had returned for them. The hunters entered. They found a woman in a chimney, a child in a well, and an

  • Chapter 117 — The Question Bell

The question bell became the most important object in the two connected worlds. It hung at the first road, but its sound traveled farther than any train. When a village wanted to open a path, it rang. When a city wanted to close one, it rang. When a traveler did not know whether to continue, the bell waited beside the road.Anja refused to own it.Instead, she carried it from settlement to settlement and taught people to ring it themselves. Sometimes the bell answered with a road. Sometimes it answered with silence. Both were considered useful.A group of young hunters asked Kael whether silence meant danger.“Not always,” he said. “Sometimes it means the world has not decided. Sometimes it means you have not asked the right question.”“What is the right question?”Kael looked at the road.“The one that leaves room for an answer you dislike.”The hunters wrote this in their field books. At dusk, a new sound came from beyond the second world. It was not a bell. It was a knock.Three kn

  • Chapter 116 — The Door They Build

The four branches returned to the river after a month. The children brought red leaves. The healers brought clean water. The mapmakers brought mirrors filled with stars. The mountain villagers brought a new sign: ASK BEFORE ENTERING.The branches met.The new world changed.A door appeared in the center of the first road.It had been built from the stones the travelers had left behind. Each stone carried a name, a choice, or a question. The creature with the bowl stood beside it.“This is the first gate.”Kael examined the hinges. “Who made it?”“You did.”“We did not build a frame.”“You built agreement.”The door opened onto a white room.Inside waited a person made from the world's first memory. It had no face, but it carried every sound the travelers had made since arriving.“I am the world,” it said.Elia lifted her spear. “You are speaking.”“You gave me questions.”“What do you want?”The person looked at the door.“I want to know whether you will leave.”No one answered quickl

  • Chapter 115 — The People of the Horizon

The mountain branch reached a village by dusk. The villagers had no names, but they had painted symbols on their homes. A circle meant food. A line meant water. A black mark meant danger. The people of Openfield asked whether they could enter. The villagers gathered around the oldest house.A woman held up a black mark.“Strangers bring roads.”Kael nodded. “Roads can bring danger.”“Then leave.”The group prepared to return.A child ran from the village carrying a blue stone. Behind him came a creature made from the mountain's shadow. The villagers closed their doors.Kael drew the white blade.“Do you want help?”The woman with the black mark hesitated. The creature reached the child.“Yes.”The villagers opened the doors. The fight was brief and violent. Seris shot the shadow through the throat. Vale used the black key to open a line in the ground. Morrow caught the creature's remaining shape. Elia protected the child. When the shadow died, it became a black mark painted on the sto
