Zareth was utterly furious. He had spent the last two hours tirelessly accumulating that sphere of condensed Qi from scratch, only for this mindless brute to barge in and destroy it all in a single fraction of a second. With no core to retain the condensed Qi, every drop of energy he had gathered had vanished into thin air.
Because he was bedridden and utterly helpless, he couldn't even express the white-hot rage surging in his chest.
"This thug... this damn thug!" Zareth thought, his eyes burning as he stared up at the man. "He is a constant, intolerable thorn in my side!"
"Zareth! It's time for your meal!" Gao barked with his usual arrogant snarl.
It seemed the thug had gone directly to retrieve the boy's food after leaving The Roaring Panda inn. Moving roughly, Gao grabbed Zareth by the shoulder, hauling his limp upper body up into a sitting position against the wall before shoving a wooden spoon filled with bland food into his mouth.
"When I was walking back here, I was pissed off as hell and fully intended to drag your useless body through the mud," Gao grumbled, sneering as he fed the boy. "But looking at your pathetic state now... what more can anyone even do to a half-dead cripple, huh?"
Gao scoffed, wiping spittle from his chin. "However, the boss wants you to start working from tomorrow morning, so it can't be helped."
Without holding back, Gao explained everything the gang leader had ordered: the upcoming annual assembly of Blackwater Town's rival gangs, the threats of ambushes and hidden spies, and the absolute demand for Zareth to resume his intelligence-gathering duties immediately.
"So be prepared tomorrow morning," the thug growled, shoving the empty bowl into his coat. "I will come to drag you out myself."
With a harsh kick to the threshold, the thug turned, marched out into the alleyway, and slammed the door shut behind him, plunging the room back into quiet darkness.
"Calm down... calm down... calm down!"
Zareth was fuming deep inside, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped beast. He drew long, deep breaths through his nose, using his soul control to suppress the roaring flames of his temper, slowly restoring tranquility to his mind.
"These beasts truly don't care about a person's well-being or survival," Zareth pondered, analyzing the situation through the memories of his new vessel. "So... this is how the original Zareth Crow was treated all along."
He reflected on the bitter reality of the dead boy's life. Zareth Crow had worked endlessly for this ruthless gang without receiving any real incentives, living in a rotting, water-logged shack, trapped in perpetual poverty.
He had operated as a spy, a high-risk, dangerous occupation where a single slip-up meant being slaughtered in a dark alley, yet he had never complained, accepting his miserable fate as a helpless slave.
"Zareth Crow was a fool who didn't understand his own worth," he thought, his eyes narrowing in the dark as a cold, calculating light gleamed within them. "He possessed a rare, specialized talent for gathering intelligence, yet he allowed himself to be bound by a fake, inflated debt."
"A physician was brought to this filthy slum, and expensive pills were fed to what seemed like a corpse... That alone proves the gang leader knows Zareth is an irreplaceable asset! The boy was simply too weak and naive to realize his own value."
A dark, sharp smile slowly curved Zareth's pale lips in the quiet darkness.
"But this time, things will be done differently. A man must understand the cards he holds and bargain around his true worth. They want their spy back? Fine... but they are no longer dealing with a helpless, sickly boy."
"After all, it is very crucial for one to use what he has within his sleeves," Zareth thought, his mind racing as he meticulously calculated every single advantage left within his meager arsenal as the cripple he currently was. "At this point, I am no longer the Holy Son Belmoth, who could have utterly obliterated these low-life thugs with a mere thought. I am Zareth, a crippled youth who can barely move his own limbs, nor cultivate a single cycle of Qi."
He took a slow, deliberate breath, letting his soul settle into the dark reality of his current vessel.
What he possessed now, his sole, lethal weapon in this wretched state, was the brilliant, hyper-perceptive mind of Zareth Crow, combined with the vast, experience of a former Holy Son.
Before even attempting to draw upon the ambient Aether Qi again, Zareth sank deep into his internal sea, withdrawing his consciousness entirely from the physical world.
He reflected more and more on the precise nature of the vessel he now occupied, analyzing its strengths, its severe limitations, and how he was going to manipulate those very traits to turn the tables in these filthy slums of Blackwater Town.
When he was Belmoth, the pristine Holy Son living in the grand high towers of the Heavenly Ember Sect, he had never even heard of a place as wretched and obscure as Blackwater Town. Slums did not exist in his world of immortal peaks and grand palaces.
Yet now, he was forced to navigate the treacherous underbelly of mortal desperation from the very bottom.
For an entire hour, he remained in absolute, unbroken reflection, dissecting every memory, every alleyway, every player, and every hidden movement within Blackwater Town.
Slowly, his heavy eyelids fluttered open, revealing eyes that shone with a cold, terrifying intensity in the dark.
"So this is the true, grim reality for those who are born without talent..." Zareth muttered under his breath, his raspy voice echoing faintly against the rotting wooden walls.
"And it is not even just about lacking talent. Even if someone in these miserable slums were born with supreme, heaven-defying talent, there are no resources, no masters, and no opportunities to ever utilize it. That means countless geniuses in this vast cultivation world get ground down, wasted, and buried in the dirt before their names are ever known."
A bitter, dark flame ignited within his chest, burning away the last remnants of his self-pity.
"But as for me... I will get out of these slums," Zareth thought, his knuckles turning white as he tightly clenched his frail, trembling hands into fists.
"And these thugs... one way or another, they will be forced to pay for every single humiliation. I can feel the deep, bitter resentment surging from the lingering instincts of this body... A raw, screaming instinct that tells me Laura's death was no simple illness, she was murdered by these very thugs!"
He ground his teeth together, the dark crimson hatred of Belmoth Cross merging seamlessly with the agonizing grief of Zareth Crow, binding his two souls into an unyielding, vengeful whole.

With his breathing perfectly being regulated, the condensed sphere of raw Wind Aether Qi continued to rotate within the darkness of his inner sea, unstable and turbulent beneath the immense pressure of his soul power.Zareth focused his consciousness upon it with absolute, unwavering intensity, carefully extending his spiritual perception around the spinning sphere. He could not simply push it forward with brute force. The moment he attempted to force too much of the raw Aether Qi out at once, the entire condensed sphere trembled violently, its liquid boundaries distorting and threatening to scatter apart into useless, wasted atmospheric energy.Zareth gritted his teeth, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth groaned under the strain."Slowly..." he commanded his own mind.He controlled his breathing once more, establishing a rhythmic, meditative cadence.Inhale.Hold.Exhale.With his exhalation, he delicate-handedly separated a thin, single strand of raw Aether Qi from the rotating sph
Chapter 15: Forty-Six Years Old in the Dark.
In that instant, Zareth was completely drenched in sweat.Without lingering any further, Gao stepped out of the shabby abode, muttering casually to himself under his breath. The thug took Zareth’s unexpected question as nothing more than a passing, eccentric inquiry from a sickly boy, not bothering to think twice about it, nor asking why he was suddenly curious about distant, legendary figures.Left entirely alone in the suffocating darkness of the room, Zareth lay paralyzed, cold sweat pouring down his pale face, his chest heaving as pure, violent shock gripped his mind.Twenty years... How could that even be possible? To his consciousness, the transition from being burned to absolute nothingness upon the Judgement Summit to awakening inside this frail, dying body had felt like nothing more than a single night’s sleep, a momentary lapse in awareness where he closed his eyes in agony and reopened them in a new reality. Now, he was being told that two full decades had silently slippe
Chapter 14: The Remote Fringe World.
Day one of work after awakening as Zareth Crow was finally over as the crimson sun dipped low beneath the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the alleys. Later that day, Gao returned to the corner near the pleasure house where he had left Zareth, roughly scooping up the paralyzed youth and carrying him back in the exact same manner he had brought him there.Nothing more of immediate consequence occurred for the remainder of that afternoon, despite the dangerous assassination plot brewing against the Red Panda. However, Zareth had gained something invaluable: he got to experience firsthand how things truly functioned around this desolate place. Rather than relying merely on fragments of the original Zareth’s memories, he had personally observed, felt, and processed the living layout of the world around him.Through his observations and also memories, Zareth confirmed the socio-political structure of Blackwater Town. The entire settlement was divided into five distinct regio
Chapter 13: From Heaven Origin to the Dirt.
Inside the private chamber..."Are you crazy?! How can you even say something like that out loud, and how on earth can you even think that I would ever be part of such madness?!" the other man hissed, dropping his voice as low as humanly possible, his face turning pale with sheer terror. Two men sat together within one of the dimly lit private rooms of the upper floor of the pleasure house, right above the alley where Zareth had been left sitting. Below, Zareth’s hyper-acute hearing locked onto every single syllable escaping their lips.Inside the room, one man was entirely bald with a heavy jaw, while the other possessed long hair tied neatly behind his back, the very man who had just casually proposed the plot to murder a gang leader."Don't worry so much about it, Edgar," the long-haired man whispered, completely unbothered. He reached out, picked up a small cup of wine, and took a casual, carefree sip. "My Shrouding Gang will protect you when the deed is done.""Protected?! But Re
Chapter 12: The Mastermind in the Dirt.
Gao gritted his teeth as he was fuming more and more as his hand trembled as he still clutched Zareth on the wall, as his thoughts were wondering how does he even know, and what is he to do with this situation."Don't even think of killing me, Gao," Zareth said at that moment as he forced his voice out through the suffocating clutch on his thin neck. The cold, unyielding iron in his tone chilled the thug to the bone. "I am more valuable than you think in the Red Panda Gang, so the Red Panda himself values me more than anyone else. Hence, he wants me to live more than anyone else." Zareth forced his raspy voice through his tight throat, his eyes locking onto Gao with terrifying intensity. "And thanks to me, your Red Panda Gang profits from the Blood Mandrake. So think carefully, if you kill me now, you will follow me straight to the grave."Gao trembled more and more, horror draining every last drop of blood from his face. Finally, his fingers uncurled, and he released his hold, letti
Chapter 11: Blood Mandrake.
From Zareth’s memories, he had realized that one of the Red Panda Gang’s businesses revolved around the Blood Mandrake. The Blood Mandrake was a controlled medicinal plant, primarily used in the refinement of healing pills. Its roots and even its blood-red sap possessed remarkable medicinal properties. When properly refined by an alchemist, the root could become an essential ingredient in pills capable of replenishing lost blood, treating severe internal injuries, and accelerating the recovery of damaged organs.Because of this, Blood Mandrakes were highly sought after by alchemists and healing guilds throughout the surrounding towns. Yet despite their immense medicinal value, Blood Mandrakes were not plants that could simply be bought and sold freely. They were controlled by the Alchemist Association.Blood Mandrakes possessed another property that made them particularly dangerous in the hands of unscrupulous people. With the proper refining method, certain parts of the root could be
