Chapter 11

Mave ran through the woods like his life depended on it, without even allowing himself to catch his breath. The route led him to a park that branched off from the woods. He finally came to a stop at a park, the Ava district park.

““The portal should be somewhere here”” 

He heard the voice of the system in his head and he looked around frantically, hoping to find it just as the system had said. He was breathing heavily and was sweating, beads of sweat were dropping from his face, chest and back. It was very noticeable because he was Shirtless and wearing just a joggers, no footwear even.

“Found it” he said, as his eyes settled on a shimmering slit like white light. It was about 10ft high and as wide as a door entrance. It was shimmering almost like a mirage, the more he looked at it reflecting the rays of the sun.

Mave hesitated as a thought came across his mind as he looked around the place. ‘this should be the portal Jiren and his team had entered, but something is wrong. There’s no-one here and there’s no barricade here stopping anyone from entering. Before there were usually government officials and security personnels that man the place preventing people other than the right people for the job from entering. What’s going on? It’s almost like no-one knows that this portal existed.’

“system are you sure this is the right portal?”

“” Yes I am certain this is the portal anomaly. I still suggest you do not enter, I don’t think you are strong enough for a portal yet.”” The system said, trying to deter maverick from continuing.

“if there is the slightest possibility that my friends are In there, then I will have to go in. I agree with you though, if this is the portal anomaly in my first life, then I am not ready for it.” 

Maverick said, but then clenched his fist and approached the portal, he entered the portal and immediately it took him to another world.

The place was dark but mave could feel he was in somewhere like a cave. A felt a cold breeze against his shirtless body and he shivered slightly. This wasn’t the first time he had entered a portal but this was the first time he was entering in this his second life and the feeling still made him shiver. Shiver out of fear of the unknown since you could never really know what dangers lurked within the portal.

“So if I am correct the portal has led me to the other world. Where the monsters are coming from?”

“”You are correct. You are somewhere in the world that is currently trying to merge with your world. The portals are just gate ways that connects both worlds.””

Maverick nodded in understanding of what the system had said. In his last life he and everyone else had just assumed that the portals were were the homes of the monsters. Although there was unconfirmed theories that tallied with what the system had just said back then, but he didn’t pay attention to them because all he cared about was killing monsters and posing as a hero for everyone to revere. 

Maverick saw a light coming from far and he took courage and began heading towards it.

The sound of electricity cackling can be heard continuously, accompanied by growls and strange noises of despair from the spider like monsters. 

The electricity travelled unnaturally through the walls and the ground on a guided path until it struck the monsters, electrifying and charring them to death.

The electricity came from Theon, who guided them as streaks of lightning with his sword to decimate the spiders in their numbers. The lightning was Theon’s talent as a B rank. He was able to expertly control the size, shape and intensity of the lightning, channelling it through his sword to deliver devastating attacks.

His eyes were glowing at streaks of electricity strayed from his body dangerously. He swiped his sword horizontally and it produced a lightning slash that traveled through the air, cutting through three spider monsters with ease. 

“Jiren you got this part, I’ll deal with the mother spider.” He said.

“Hell no! You take care of the small fries.”

Jiren yelled back as he leaped towards the direction of the biggest spider monster hanging upside down on the roof, it was already slowly approaching them.

Jiren stuck to the top of the cave upside down, when he made it to the top. He grinned in excitement as the spider monsters ran towards his location on behest of their mother spider. He slammed his palms on the ceiling and immediately activated his talent. And when he did so the ceiling froze, ice grew out from his palms and covered the ceiling in seconds freezing the spider monsters to death.

The mother spider growled as the ice got to its appendages but it easily broke off the ice with ease, revealing that it had superior strength compared to the others.  It opened its mouth and spewed a stream of acid to Jiren and the floor. Jiren moved out of the way, still hanging upside down on the ceiling and was surprised to see how the acid melted the ceiling and the ice he had place there before.

“Damn, other spiders spew webs but this spews acids, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Mave yelled as he continued to avoid the acid the spider kept spewing at him.

“I told you to stay back” Theon yelled as he threw several bolts of lightning to the boss spider, as he tried to assist Jiren.

“I can handle it” Jiren yelled back as he watched the spider easily swat off the bolts of lightning with one of its appendages covered in thick spider webs. Showing that it was somehow able to tell that it’s webs were good insulators against the lightning.

“then do so, we don’t have all day.” Theon said as he sprinted off to assist Sky Talia and Donre against the numbers of smaller spider monsters assaulting them.

“okay, okay.” Jiren said to Theon and then looked back at the spider with resolve, deciding to end it now..

“Now then mother spider, survive this.”

Jiren inhaled and exhaled cold air, before he extended his right hand at the spider and muttered “cold touch” as he activated an advanced technique of his ice talent. 

**Talent: Ice manipulation: cold touch**

Immediately a pulse travelled from Jiren’s fingers towards the spider monster and other small spiders near it. The pulse was like a wave that moved in the air and the moment it reached the spider monster, it began to freeze, not just freeze but petrify, everything in its body got frozen, flesh, water, hair, web etc. There was no exception and immediately it shattered into ice crystals. 

Jiren sighed and then exhaled again, feeling a little weak since the technique he just used required a lot of energy to perform. But it was very powerful and always gave him victory.

“I just bagged another win” he grinned and then leapt back down waiting for the others to finish up the smaller spiders. 

When they finished , Jiren went to the energy core of the portal and then crushed it.

“all done”

“now we have destroyed it, we have roughly an hour to leave before the portal closes finally. Let’s get moving” Theon said and everyone nodded and then followed Sky back out of the portal, through the direction they had followed when then entered.

Outside the portal Jiren’s team was greeted by the portal regulation team that had allowed them in earlier, they greeted and congratulating them on successful destroying the portal energy core that would undoubtedly close the portal in a few minutes.

“Good job again” the officer on site In charge of portal regulation congratulated them. They took few pictures for the media, since different media crews were present to document about the whole thing. 

In any portal siting, the portal regulation Team makes appearance first. They quarantine the area and move civilians away from the site since on most occasions monsters do cross over from the portals. They restrict access into the portals so not everyone goes in and endangers themselves, allowing access to only the qualified talented people to go in and close it.

“What’s the situation in there?” the portal regulation Team leader asked, wanting to take their official statements, so they can document what was inside the portal as it begins to close. 

“this portal had giant spider like monsters, all around and below C rank as opposed to the B rank grading the portal was given initially” Theon replied as the leader of the team.

“I see.” He said as he took down their statements. 

“any thing out of the ordinary In there?”

“no” Theon replied. 

Jiren sighed as he waited for them to finish their report

“this is my least favourite part of the job. Making the reports”

“hang in there, we’re almost done” Talia tapped his shoulder, reassuring him.

“yeah, I have no other ….” He was caught off when he noticed something about the portal.

“shouldn’t the portal be getting smaller now that we have destroyed the core, until it eventually closes up?” Jiren asked.

“yes, why?” Theon answered

“look, it’s been close to an hour now and it’s still not still getting smaller or closing”

“that’s not possible” Theon repeated. 

“Sir, we are detecting strange energy signatures” one of the officials ran over to the leader of the portal Regulation Team.

“what?”
