Chapter 12

Mave sprinted out of the way, where he was formerly standing,  away from the pincers of the large centipede monster that attempted to ram into him.

Mave had been attacked the moment he had entered the light. When he followed the light he entered the very bottom of what looked looked like a mountain. When he looked up he saw that there was an entrance above and it was where the light was coming from, but it was too high up. 

He looked around and so that the place was wide, having nothing but rocks and boulders on the ground. 

The centipedes immediately borrowed out of the ground and attacked him.

He looked at the centipede and smacked his lips since he did not have time to fight, because he had to find his friends and make sure that they were okay. 

The centipede was over 10metres tall and a meter wide, with little black eyes but two a giant mandible that almost looked like pincers. Judging from how big and sharp it looked and how it could use it burrow into the ground with ease, Mave could tell that if it was to come in contact with him, it would shred him to bits.

He focused on the centipede to learn his stats.

‘the class isn’t the problem, but their numbers.’ Mave thought as he wearily looked around and counted the three giant centipedes that were in the place. 

One of them shot at him again almost like a moving train, Mave ran out of the way and the centipede smashed the boulder mave was standing on effortlessly before focusing on him again, the others as well preparing to charge at him.

“” I can detect a strange presence and energy Mave, you should run away from this place now.”” The system warned 

“I can’t” Mave said struggling to stay away from the centipedes that tried to maul him.

“”you are not ready for this, you haven’t even awakened yet.””

“I will manage somehow, but first, I have to survive this. Any ideas? ” Mave insisted, very determined to see it all through to the end. 

The system knowing that Mave would not back down, gave up on trying to convince him.

“”you’d need a weapon to be able to fight these centipedes, their tough exoskeleton makes them almost impervious to all forms of attacks. Hitting it anywhere other than the end will not kill it,  aim only for the head.””

Mave nodded, he had fought these centipedes before in his past life, but back then he had awakened and he wasn’t as weak as this.

‘ this would have been very easy if I had my talents or at least a weapon' he thought, still nimbly trying to shake off the centipedes gunning for him, but they were tenacious.

‘no weapon here.  And I can’t use the rocks here because this centipedes can easily crush boulders, rocks will hardly do anything against them.’ 

Mave skidded to a stop and then looked at his hands and remembered something he had done back in the past. 

“we’ll do this the old fashioned way.”

*Skill activated: Energy infusion + Enhanced strike*

Mave stood his ground as he activated his skills, whilst waiting for one of the centipedes to charge him again, Jung infused his energy into his fists and prepared himself..

The moment the centipede came closer again, attempting to maul him with its mandibles. Mave reared his right fist back and then with all his might propelled him arm forward to punch the centipede right on the head. His punch broke the mandibles and drove into the skull of the centipede with a loud sound. The centipede reared backwards swayed in the air before it collapsed and died. 

Mave smirked at his successful and then looked at the other two flexing his arm.

“one down, two to go”

The portal widened strangely rather than closing causing Jiren and his team and the others present to watch it cautiously. 

“what do you mean you are detecting a strange energy?” the leader of the portal regulation asked his subordinates furiously demanding immediate answers. 

“we don’t know sir” his subordinates lamented as they tried to get the energy level measuring machine to work. 

“it’s like there’s another core inside.” Another more experienced subordinate answered. 

The leader gritted his teeth and then barked out orders. 

“report this as a portal anomaly now!, clear the vicinity for another 500m radius and request for any A class talented to come here  right now….”

“sir, something’s coming out of the portal. It’s a spider monster!” the subordinate shrieked in fright as she tried to run away. 

Just as the subordinate had said, a spider monster came out of the portal and shrieked before it attempted to run amok. 

“Everyone step back! Jiren, Talia take the sides. Donre and sky protect the vicinity. I’ll proceed from the front.” Theon shouted and then gave orders to his team immediately drawing his sword. Since they were the only talented people around, it was left for them to manage the situation.

Another spider came out of the portal, two more did and soon more spider monsters came trooping out of the portal ,escaping to the human world.

“What the hell! I thought we killed all of these bastards” Jiren said as he took his position, whilst holding his Lance tighter ready to act.

“we did, I was certain. I even confirmed with my Navigator”  Sky said,  visibly disturbed by what she was seeing at the moment.

“we’ll find out later,  for now  don’t let a single one of them escape.” Theon said and they all nodded before they engaged the spiders again, this time, outside the portal.

Mave removed his hand from the skull of another centipede and watched as the creature writhe before collapsing.  Mave was breathing heavily now, he looked around and so the corpses of close to ten monster centipedes. 

‘they just keep coming, hopefully I got the last one, I don’t see any more coming. Ugh my hands hurt.’

He looked at his fists and see how sour they looked because of smashing them repeatedly into the hard exoskeletons of the centipede. 

He was also spotting a fee bruise wounds on his body, since he had been fighting the tenacious centipedes since.

He extended his hands out and the ring activated, absorbing what little energy the corpses of the monsters had so as to replenish his own energy and heal himself as well.

Mave paused when he felt the cave shake and hearing the sounds of something crawling, not just something but a lot of things. 

“what’s happening now,  it sounds as if there are hundreds of insects crawling around the place.” He looked around trying to understand what was happening.

He felt the presence again, and he was certain that he had not felt such a presence before in his past life. 

When he was done absorbing the energy, he leapt up and started climbing the walls of the cave, so he could continue to where he was sensing the presence.

Jiren and his team successfully killed all the monsters that came out of the portal and tried to escape. The place was like littered with the corpses of over one hundred spider monsters. 

“these are a lot. Are these the monsters you fought in there?” 

The leader of the portal regulation asked Jiren as he was dispatching the last set of spiders, making sure that they were dead.

“yes, but these spiders are more aggressive than before.” Jiren answered, as he tried to steady his breath from all the fighting. 

“luckily none of them escaped Beyond this point.” 

“yes, I’m very sure of it. But just in case, sky could you check.” Jiren asked her. 

Sky was also breathing hard since she had been fighting as well. 

“will do..”

She activated her talent and began using it to sense the entire terrain.  She shook her head, signalling that no other monster escaped, to their relief. 

“so what next?” The man asked. 

“we will go into the portal and investigate” Theon answered as he stepped forward, wiping his sword clean from all the black blood of the monsters that were on it. 

Jiren nodded in agreement. 

“no you can’t do that.  Your team has done so much already and we can’t tell what’s inside the portal anymore. Atleast wait for the A class talenteds to come in, you are only B class.” The man objects, for their safety. 

“how long do we wait? The longer we wait, who knows what else happens” Theon insisted. And at this time, Theon’s team came together,  ready to follow their leader. 

“this is a portal anomaly. We aren’t certain anymore the threat level this presents to you and to us out here. “

“we will do our jobs sir, when the A class teams come. They can come in as support.”

Theon said before looking at his team, and when he saw they were in agreement, he moved on,  leading them into the portal once again.

As they left, people around cheered them on and clapping at their heroism. Jiren’s team still remained the best B rank team, loved by everyone.
