I gave her everything. She gave me a grave. Jayden Cole died exactly the way he lived: sacrificing everything for the people he cared about. His girlfriend, Lilly. His best friend, Kyle. He gave them his loyalty, his resources, and ultimately, his life. But when the horde came knocking, they were the ones who unbolted the door and let the nightmare in. Then, he woke up. It was the same city, the same girlfriend, and the same best friend, smiling at him as if nothing was wrong because, for now, nothing was. Not this time. This time, Jayden isn't going into the fray empty-handed. While the rest of the world sleepwalks toward the coming outbreak, he’s quietly building an empire in the shadows, stockpiling supplies, securing safehouses, and amassing a fortune no one knows about. And when the system finally triggers, granting everyone the powers they need to survive the dead, his gift is different. He didn't get fire. He didn't get ice. He got the truth. Every lie, every ulterior motive, every mask Lilly and Kyle wear, he sees right through them. And the more his rage builds, the stronger he grows. All he has to do now is wait. They betrayed him once and called it survival. This time, he’s going to make sure they regret ever being born.

Chapter 1

 CHAPTER 1: THE VOW

The door slammed shut, and in that single, heavy thud, everything finally clicked.

I threw my fist against the metal anyway. Once. Twice. The sting was nothing compared to the warmth of blood smearing across the surface.

"Lilly!" My voice broke, sounding small and pathetic. "Lilly, open the door!"

Silence. Only the sound of my own ragged, frantic breathing filled the space, and then, from somewhere behind me, closer than before, the sound of them. The dragging of feet. The wet, guttural noises coming from throats that shouldn't have been capable of making them.

I turned around slowly. I felt like if I moved too fast, I’d break the reality of what I was seeing.

Six of them. Maybe seven. They were shuffling down the hallway, squeezed shoulder to shoulder in a corridor that should have only fit two people. The overhead lights flickered, and for one terrifying heartbeat, I saw clearly what was left of their faces, and I immediately wished I hadn't.

I hammered on the door again. "Kyle! It's me! Open up, man, please…"

A shadow shifted behind the small, reinforced window. Kyle. I’d know the silhouette of his shoulders anywhere. Three years of late nights, of him crashing on my couch, of me covering his rent when his checks were late, and he’d swear he’d make it up to me.

He didn't budge.

"I know you're in there," I whispered, my voice dropping as a hollow sensation began to fold in on my chest. "Kyle. Open the door."

The shadow froze. Then, it moved, but it was retreating. Moving away from me.

That was the moment the truth hit harder than the noise behind me. It wasn't the smell, or the flickering lights, or the way my hands were shaking too violently to even form a fist.

I realized the door hadn't been locked by accident.

"You planned this," I said. The anger was gone, replaced by a numb, empty realization. I didn't have the strength to shout anymore. "You and Lilly. You both planned this."

From the other side, muffled by the heavy steel, I heard her. She wasn't screaming. She wasn't crying out for me.

She was laughing.

It was a soft, relieved sound. The kind of laugh someone lets out when a massive weight has finally been lifted off their shoulders.

"We needed the supplies, Jay," she said. Her voice was so gentle, so maddeningly kind, like she was explaining a simple concept to a child. "You understand. You would have wanted us to survive."

I had given her everything. My savings had vanished into an account in her name because she said it was "safer." My apartment, my car, my life three years of putting her and Kyle first, of being the guy who never asked for anything because I convinced myself that was what love meant.

And this was my reward. A locked door and a hallway full of the dead. Her soft, relieved laughter was the price she paid to keep breathing, and I was the currency.

Something lunged from the shadows and gripped my shoulder.

I didn't scream. I want that noted, wherever stories like this are kept. I didn't scream. I just turned, looked it in what remained of its eyes, and for one strange, lucid second, I felt absolutely nothing.

Then the pain hit. It felt like the entire world was collapsing into a single, white-hot point right behind my collarbone.

I hit the floor. The hallway tilted wildly. Above me, the lights continued their rhythmic, nauseating flicker on, off, on, off as if the building itself couldn't decide if it wanted to witness the end.

I thought about my mother. I thought, in a moment of pure stupidity, about a hoodie I’d left at Kyle’s place two winters ago. I thought about the specific, metallic click of a deadbolt sliding home, a sound I knew I would recognize anywhere for as long as "anywhere" existed.

But underneath the chaos, something else began to rise. It wasn't fear.

It felt like a promise.

If I get one more chance,  I thought, the clarity of it sharper than anything I’d ever spoken, I will never be this man again. I will not give everything away to people who were just waiting for the right moment to take it.

The weight on my chest grew unbearable. My vision began to fray at the edges, gray bleeding into a deep, suffocating black.

I don't care what it costs. I don't care what I have to become. If I get one more chance, I will make them pay. Both of them.

The hallway vanished. The lights died. Even the pain began to recede, which was somehow more terrifying than the agony itself.

In the darkness, just as everything was slipping away, something answered.

It wasn't a voice, exactly. It wasn't words, either. It was more like a presence leaning in close ancient, patient, and intensely curious in a way that made my nonexistent skin crawl.

A vow, it seemed to say. Or something very close to it. Noted.

Then, there was nothing.

----------------------------

I woke up with a gasp, my hands flying to my chest, searching for the wound, the blood, the hole where my life had ended.

There was nothing. Just the steady, frantic thrum of my heart against smooth, unbroken skin.

Sunlight. It was soft, ordinary morning light, streaming through the blinds I knew so well. My apartment. My bed. The ceiling fan spun in slow, lazy circles, and I could see that same water stain in the corner I’d been ignoring for months.

From down the hall, a kettle started to whistle. I heard footsteps, then a voice warm, familiar, and achingly alive.

"Jay? You up? Coffee's almost ready."

Lilly.

My entire body went ice-cold.

Before I could answer, before I could even find my breath, something flickered in the air right in front of my face. It was a pale blue light, sharp and digital, hovering just above my blankets.

Words. A message. Something meant only for my eyes.

[SYSTEM AWAKENED.]

[HOST DESIGNATION: FIRST OF THE REBORN.]

I stared at it, my heart no longer just pounding, but screaming.

The kettle kept whistling in the kitchen. Lilly kept talking, asking if I wanted eggs, if I’d slept okay, reminding me about our dinner plans with Kyle tonight.

And there I sat, in the very bed I had died just a few feet away from, watching words hang in the air that shouldn't exist, in a world that hadn't fallen apart yet.

Not yet.

But it was coming. I knew exactly how it would happen, when it would happen, and exactly who would be standing on the other side of that door when it did.

This time, as I stared at those glowing letters until they burned into my mind, I made a promise.

This time, I’d be ready.
