It was a standoff about to turn into a war.

The tension in the atmosphere was becoming palpable. With each inhale and exhale, there was caution. With every beat their hearts made, there was anticipation. Who was going to make the first move.

Her first words were quiet and said in a casual manner that made it seem like they weren't aiming for each other's necks.

“Assimilation…”

She closed her eyes, and when they opened again, they were glowing

"First Step.”

Upon hearing her words, Nyx and Morgan's eyes widened as they chorused "What?!"

They both leapt back, boots slamming against broken earth as they widened the distance between them and Layla.

Their faces were painted with disbelief.

Assimilation wasn’t supposed to be her ability.

That technique belonged to Beast Tamers, not Eternals like Layla.

But rather than panic from the new uncertainty, Morgan’s lips formed a wicked grin, eyes glowing with a deep red. “I said it, you're freaking awesome? That’s more like it!”

  • Two Against One

As she ran through the forest, her legs moving so fast it looked like they weren't touching the ground. Regardless, Layla was still sensitive about her surroundings, proceeding with caution. And after thinking hard, she finally recalled who the red haired lady was.Her name was Morgan. An International assassin with over 150 confirmed kills. She had broken into Astrovia's most impenetrable Maximum security prison and escaped before. Her name appeared in almost every list of highly wanted criminals Layla had ever seen, but no one had managed to bring her in. Now here she was, in the flesh. If Morgan was among the contestants, then this wasn’t just a hunt. Layla’s fingers curled tightly into fists as she ran. This was a massacre waiting to happen.Back before the chase began, Lian had quietly handed each of them a necklace engraved with a temporary resistance seal. They didn’t question it then, but now Layla was grateful. Without it, the barrier sealing their abilities would’ve left

  • A Red Nightmare

Levi's chest was still under unbearable pressure. It was like his ribs were slowly being grinded into shards, by a boulder. A high pitched whistling sound filled his ears, blocking out everything else in the world around him. His fingers twitched weakly against the ground as a futile and desperate attempt at resisting. But he could feel it, he was slowly going numb."Am I dying?" He thought, letting out a hollow laugh that barely escaped his throat. "I guess I am."But he felt something else at that moment. It wasn't physical pain, just a bitter emotion that swelled in his chest. What exactly was this feeling? Levi tried to make sense of it as his vision began to blur around the edges. It was non other than regret. And emotion he was quiet familiar with, but hadn't felt since he got to Astrovia."My good old friend, Regret..."Once he acknowledged it, the thoughts flooded in.Maybe if he hadn't spent his whole first year in Astrovia doing something. Maybe if he didn’t rely so much o

  • A Call with No Response

Levi steadied his breath, willing his muscles to obey, and his focus to hold. He was racking his brain, planning out what little tactics he could, preparing himself mentally for a clash that seemed like it'd bring more pain than victory.Out of nowhere, a haze of dark mist slowly crawled out from the bushes around them. slithering across the ground like smoke searching for something to consume.“What is it this time…” he muttered under his breath, voice low, laced with weariness. He was already having trouble with what was in front of him, another additional problem was the least thing he needed at the moment. His eyes ran accross the bushes, trying to pin down the origin of this dark mist. But at that moment, the mist wasn't the immediate threat to him.It was what it distracted him from. The air cracked like the sound of cloth slicing through wind. The masked man was already on the move. Out of reflex, his head snapped up, but he had already wasted too much time. All he saw was a b

Violet crashed into a pile of grasses, her chest rising and falling in shallow bursts. She was quite out of breath, but obviously drained. The kind of exhaustion that showed someone had stressed themselves physically.Laying a few feet opposite her was something that almost resembled a corpse Telling what it was, wasn't exactly what one would call an easy task It was hard to say what exactly it was. The figure was twisted unnaturally with its limbs looking shriveled like a dried up leaf. What remained of its face was just dried up lips and clenched teeth. The only features that hinted at it probably being a human figure at the very least was the faint trace of a nose, and a single intact eye.Beside it, half-buried in the dirt, was the remnants of a plasma spear. Its energy core flickered weakly in the broken shaft.Letting out a heavy breath, Violet pushed herself upright. Maybe it was instinct, but her hand pressed against her side where the stab wound had been. But the wound wasn'

  • A String of Mysteries

As they digested the cost of the errors they had made, Layla and the others heard a sudden impact a few feet away from them. Four figures descended from the sky, their descent releasing a small dust cloud that blinded everyone. Just then, a male voice echoed throughout the island, with a sinister laughter and delight."All players are gathered. Good... Welcome to our playground, Teachers, Sentinels, and if I may say, future Sentinels."None of teachers and Layla hesitated. In the blink of an eye, they vanished from their initial position which was a few feet away from the students to now standing in front of them. They were each standing upright, but their muscles were tensed, ready to counter any sudden movements at any time. "Lian..." Layla called her name, glancing back at the students.Lian didn't need more. She immediately understood the assignment. She conjured up barriers with two layers around the students like a dome, glowing under the sunlight. Now they all fully set the
