Eyes In The Dark.

And that was what I hated. They never ever had guilt on their faces.

It was something I noted the moment the purges began.

You'd suspect that a traitor would break a sweat the moment you stared them down. Or that they'd look away the moment you locked eyes with them. Or that they'd maybe stammer or fidget.... something to point them out. But they don't.

Rather, they grin at you. They served you, greeted you by name, helped you pull out your chair and even offered coffee.

They just somehow managed to blend in so well. And that's it. Exactly what makes them dangerous.

I'd made Quinn compile a list of names....of the people who had the tiniest bit of access to our internal archives, encrypted data and project schedule. After doing a very detailed investigation, I'd narrowed them down to 15 names. And then I bit it down to seven and finally three.

One name kept ranking number one even after the personal interviews.

Sasha Ng.

Apparently, she's an intern who got recruited a couple of months back. She's a very quiet person and from the legal department, too.

Just too perfect.

Since I wasn't finding anything solid, I proceeded to install cameras in her department. I monitored the email traffic closely and even went as far as planting some fake documents that I coded with tracers.

Two days later, one of the files was accessed from her login.

Bingo, I know. But that's where the confusion set in. The tracer led nowhere.

The main file disappeared.

With zero upload logs, no single device footprint..... Just vanished.

Gone.

Ghosted.

And I just couldn't help but feel like she knew that we had eyes on her.

"I told you, didn't I? That girl's a dead end," Quinn spoke from behind me as I stared into the office monitors.

"She fucking had access to the decoy file."

"Well, yeah. But then so did all the other three. Besides, she's never even worked in finance before. There's no way she'd have a clue what the file meant."

I loved how Quinn underestimated people.

"And it's exactly why she wouldn't hesitate to open it. Because she wouldn't be suspected, "I mumbled.

He sighed tiredly. "You're convinced she's the mole?"

"No, not really. I just think that she's being used....and I have a hunch who the main bastard is."

"I need a new assistant," I told Quinn, sighing tiredly.

"Oh?" he frowned. "But you already have a....."

"New, Quinn. That's the key point. I need someone new. A complete stranger," I spoke with a wave of my hand.

"But why?" he looked hesitant. Of course, because it's how our family worked. We didn't let old staff go except there's a solid reason.

"Because I need someone who's yet to pick a side. Someone who wouldn't betray me easily."

"What if they do?"

"They won't. Just trust me, "I spoke convincingly.

"Alrighty then, if you say so. I'll get back to you with a list of names," he spoke and headed out.

Quinn was just too competent for his good. Anyway, I got a list of names a few hours later.

About six names. All thoroughly vetted and off-grid.

I skimmed through their profile boringly. Most of them were dull, probably easy to sway.

But then I saw it.

Her. Her name's April Dawn.

Age 20. Graduated early due to nerdish attributes, a minor in digital forensics and has zero social presence. Obviously has no agenda.

A nobody who led a very quiet life.

Perfect. Just what I needed.

I tapped on the name.

"She's the one."

Quinn looked at the person I chose and scratched the back of his head. "Errr... You're sure?"

"I'm sure. Something tells me I'm going to be grateful for picking her."

He sighed but nodded nonetheless. I had a feeling he'd take off if he saw the opportunity to. Poor Quinn.

It was a new day, and it started with the sound of heels.

Click. Click. Click

It sounded too fast. Way off rhythm, and one foot dragging.

Someone was running, and I stepped into the lobby just as the elevator doors slid open.

With her phone pressed to one ear, a — is that a security badge?— Paper coffee tray precariously wobbling between her elbow and chest, a lady bolted, heading for the reception desk like her life depended on it.

She probably never saw me, because one minute I was standing, every piece of clothing clean, and the next minute..... CRASH!!

The impact hit almost instantly, as I felt warmth soak through my shirt. Then the sharp sting that came from the heat. The sticky liquid ran down my stomach.

The lady's eyes snapped up.

Wild hazel eyes. Apologies swam in them. She looked genuinely terrified.

"Oh my....fuck. I'm so sorry, I swear I didn't see you. I'd been carried away with trying to call the front desk but they didn't answer and the line back at the Black Bean was just so stupidly long, I was just...."

She stopped rambling. Because the whole lobby had frozen.

Dozens of eyes were on her as if she were some lamp that'd just walked itself straight into the slaughterhouse.

Not even a single person moved to help her.

"Do you have any idea what you just did?"one of the guards around whispered to her, and she stared at me, her eyes flicking from the dripping stain on my shirt to my masked face.

I still hadn't said anything. I just stared at her.

"I..." She opened her mouth to speak, panic now on her face. "I can pay for the shirt."

Interesting. But I said nothing.

And it looked like my silence made her panic deepen, because by now her lips were trembling. Her face was flushed, and her big, wild eyes only got larger.

One more second and she was going to cry.

"Miss Dawn?"

We both turned around to see Quinn standing by the receptionist's desk, holding a clipboard.

"Uh...yes?" she blinked nervously.

"You're the new assistant, no?"

She blinked a couple more times, and I lost count. "Err...I....I guess so?"

He hummed, nodding. He seemed completely unfazed by the unfolding scene.

"Come with me. Mr Hale's waiting."

She gasped, her hand flying over her mouth.

"That's....that's you, right?" she asked in a whisper.

Guess who finally got the current location on some girlfriend boxing bastard? Yeah, I did. And so help me God that I wasn't going to act all violent, because I was so damn ready. Not that I'm judging anyone, it's just....my spite for anyone who's un-fucking-reasonable enough to even raise his hand on a female was on a high level. I walked through the bar's warped door and the strong stench of spilled beer, fried grease and dreams that'd been shattered hit me. The place smelled of small lives and ambitions even smaller. Translation? The exact kind of place he'd crawl to the moment he had nobody to exert his weak dominance on. Truthfully, I didn't belong in a place like this, and everyone in the room probably knew that. People turned to catch a glimpse of me, toning down their voices. A group of men tried holding gazes with me but ended up backing down and shuffling further into the shadows. I didn't even have it in me to hold long talks. My goal was clear as day. Find him. • Very Friendly Talk.

The scent of black coffee filled my nose as it rose in a slow curl of steam as I walked through the hall towards the guest room. The sky was gray outside the penthouse, its soft glow casting shadows over the hardwood floors. The house felt the way it always did. Silent. I'd been busy all through the night, moving from going through files, signing what needed to be signed and then doing research on every single person that might just be the guy that I was looking for. But nothing. Again. Was I frustrated? Yes. But was I going to stop or give up now? No. Because The Terminator — whoever the fuck he was — played a solid role in making me wretched and foolish. If my parents hadn't been killed, Grandma would've never had to keep or raise me despite her struggling heavily. She never would've gotten ill due to stress, and she probably would've still been alive. Shaking unwanted thoughts off my head, I pushed open the door to the guest room. I found her still bundled underneath the c

  • Bruises She Hid.

I was thankful to have caught her in time. Her weight folded against like something so fragile, trying to hold its shape together. I looked down at her. There was a dark bruise peeking out just past her sleeve and another one at the corner of her temple. "April, "I called out in a low growl, but I got no answer. She was too light. Featherweight if I may say. I scooped her up, getting on my feet. "You're back....."I could hear Quinn's voice behind me but I didn't look back. "Your car's closer. Drive by car back to the penthouse."He didn't question me — more like I didn't give him the chance to cause the next minute I was out of the company and sliding into the driver's seat with her nestled at the back. I zoomed off. As I rode through the busy roads, I kept glancing at the back, trying to see if she'd at least move a finger. Nothing. From what I'd seen before she fainted, something hit her head. And I refused to believe that the bruise was just a bump from some fall because I

  • Drawn Battle line.

The skyline of Avalon had already drowned out the last hues of the sun when I walked Mr Mori out of my company building. The air felt a lot cooler than I'd expected, unlike the man standing beside me. Walking in silence, we soon reached the circular drive where a black sedan polished to mirror shine was waiting. The man I suspected to be Mr Mori's assistant pulled the door open, and just as the man was about to step in, he stopped, turning around to look at me. He had his hands clasped behind him, his sharp eyes naturally glaring at me. "You're quite the decisive one," he spoke in English, though not clearly at the slightest. I could barely hear him. "But just so you know, your strategy didn't secure that deal. That girl did. The interpreter."Of course. I knew that. Taking a small pause, he grunted. "She's a very competent person. Poised despite the pressure. You should keep her."Nodding, I replied, "That's duly noted.""She's one of the very few who has clarity in her words.

_____Like I said before, the POV switches are only going to be in very few chapters, after which we switch back to our ML's POV. This chapter is based on Steven's POV. Enjoy!_____The air felt calm against my skin. Way too calm and quiet. I couldn't help but feel like the day was hardly going to be a good one. With my fingers hovering over the keyboard, the screen's cold glow bounced off polished glass and half-finished espresso. The internal database of the company flickered under my gaze, with columns of communications that'd been timestamped unfolding like confessions. Every keyword that'd been flagged and programmed into the sweep by Quinn illuminated red. Divest. Q4 irregularities. Projections that had been undervalued. But if everything, just one name kept repeating in different shades of red. Sasha Ng. You see, since she was the personal assistant to the CFO, it was only normal that she was on a low profile. It was why we found nothing on her records. But we'd been kee

____Hello, Loves! So this chapter is going to be in Liam's narrative because it just got to happened to be in line with the plot. And it's probably going to happen a few times in the book, but I'll do my best to ensure that I leave warnings like this! Happy reading.....____Liam's POVIf you asked me, I think rage comes in different ranges. And the one I was familiar with? It was barely associated with screams or yells or even fist slams or things being thrown. It just ....simmered. Like it breathed through clenched jaws and bit through the back of your molars until your tongue gets overwhelmed with the taste of copper. That was the rage that settled inside of me. I sat in the middle of a disorganized room, seated on my bed with my head buried in my palms. I needed it all gone. I wanted my life back. I wanted my tainted name fixed. My company has been restored. Living like this wasn't something I ever thought would happen. To me, of all people. I wanted to go back to living l
