"Not you," Dorian said to Nadia. "You stay with the van."

"The hell I do."

"Call Officer Cole. Tell her to bring every cop she'd trust with her life, and tell her to come to Cross Creek in thirty minutes." He met her eyes. "Someone has to be standing outside when this ends, with a badge and a clean record. Someone has to say what happened."

Nadia's jaw worked. She looked at Reyes, then at the dead leg Dorian was favoring, then at the sinking sky behind the scrapyard. "If you're not through that

  • What's Left

Dawn came up gray over the Cross Creek Scrapyard, and Dorian walked out into it on his own two legs. Not all of them worked. The left one still hung like an afterthought, but Nadia had strapped a fresh brace around it, and the cold air bit at the pins and fire until they felt almost like feeling. He crossed the gravel lot between police cars and the long black body bags laid in a row. Officers stepped aside for him without being told.Cole waited beside the open door of Nadia's van, her uniform torn at the sleeve, her face the color of ash."I've got eight hours," she said quietly. "Maybe ten. After that, somebody upstairs is going to ask why the man who broke into Voss's vault isn't in a cell. I'll tell them you needed a surgeon. It's even true.""I'll tell them the truth.""No." Her eyes held his. "You'll tell them what's in my report. I've already written it. Please don't make me a liar for nothing."He didn't answer. After a moment she gave a tight nod, then turned back toward the

  • Ninety Seconds

Dorian held out the revolver, grip first.Cole took it. She broke open the cylinder, saw the empty chambers, and let out a slow breath. "Thank you.""It was empty anyway.""I know. That's why it means something." She holstered her own weapon and turned toward Voss. "Augustin Voss, you're under arrest for conspiracy, trafficking, and the murders of Farrah Boyd and Elliot Marsh."Voss held out his good wrist. Cole cuffed it to the broken one in front of him, careful, and an officer led him toward the main doors."A moment, Detective." Voss stopped. "I'd like the record to reflect that I came peacefully."The officers around him didn't answer.A scraping footstep echoed from the tunnel door. Reyes staggered out onto the arena floor, face blackened with soot, shirt scorched, his arms wrapped around a pile of ledgers. A thick folder jutted from under one elbow. His eyes were red. He looked like a man who'd just crawled out of a fire, which he had."I got most of it," he said hoarsely. "The

  • Choke Point

The first volley shredded the catwalk rail.Dorian threw himself back through the steel door as sparks sprayed the air where his head had been. Bullets whined off the concrete. A chunk of the doorframe tore loose and struck his shoulder. He hit the landing, rolled onto his stomach, and lay there gasping, ribs grinding like broken pottery.Eight guns. Don't fight eight. Make them come one at a time.He dragged himself down the metal stairs. Every step was a scream. At the bottom, in the dust beside the crates where he'd fallen, something small and dark gleamed under the yellow bulb.Voss's revolver. He scooped it up. The cylinder was warm. He thumbed it open, counted two live rounds, and snapped it shut. Two bullets. A rebar. A dead leg.He pressed his back to the tunnel wall at the corner, where the passage bent left, and listened.Boots rang on the metal stairs above. Two sets. Fast. The reserves were coming.Dorian forced his breathing quiet. He lifted the revolver in one hand, the

  • The Dark Passage

"Save what you can," Dorian said.Reyes stared at him. Smoke curled around his face. Flames roared behind the desk, eating the open case and reaching for the shelves. "You can't catch him with that leg.""I know.""Then why—""Because if I let him walk out of here, Tomasz and Jonah and Boyd all die for nothing." Dorian gripped Reyes's shoulder hard enough to hurt. "The ledgers are yours. Get as much out as you can. Find Reaper's mother in there if you can. She's in one of those files."Reyes's mouth opened. Closed. His eyes shone, and he nodded once. "Don't die.""I'm trying."Sixty-two seconds.Dorian turned and plunged into the dark passage. The steel door groaned shut behind him on a hydraulic hinge and clicked into its frame. The siren faded to a muffled throb. He stood in total blackness, the smell of smoke thin and fading. His own breathing came back to him, ragged, wet, broken at the ribs.He pulled out his phone and thumbed on the light.A narrow concrete tunnel stretched ahea

  • What Burns

Dorian raised both hands and opened his palms."Reyes," he said, without turning. "Put the gun down."Behind him, Reyes drew a sharp breath. "Ash—""Down."A scrape of metal on concrete. The pistol clattered to the floor.Voss's eyes narrowed a fraction. In fifteen years of running a city, Dorian guessed he'd rarely seen a man surrender a weapon when he held the stronger hand. "You've surprised me twice tonight, Mr. Ash. That's rare.""You said you wanted to talk. So talk." Dorian leaned his weight against the doorframe. His dead leg hung like a plank. His ribs screamed. "What do you want?""Two cases." Voss nodded toward the desk, the half-filled steel cases beside it. "A car. Ten minutes. I walk out of here with what matters to me, and you keep the rest, which is considerable." The lighter stayed steady in his hand. "You get the vault. I get my life."He thinks it's a negotiation. Good."And the backers?""Will survive. They always do."Dorian shook his head slowly. He dug into his

  • Clean Or Dirty

Reaper's first punch broke something in Dorian's ribs.He felt it go, a bright white snap on his left side, and the world narrowed to the cage and the man in it. He staggered. Reaper didn't follow up. He stood with his fists raised, shoulders heaving, and waited. He's doing it again. Making it last."Stay down," Reaper rasped."No.""Please."Dorian came back in with a jab and a low kick to the thigh. Reaper took both without a flinch and answered with a hook that rang Dorian's skull like a bell. He hit the chain-link with his shoulder. The wire rattled. His left leg buckled and he caught himself on the fence, hanging there, breath whistling through his teeth."Thirty-three minutes!" Reyes called from outside the cage. His voice was high and cracked.Clean. Disciplined. Rules keep you alive. It had kept him alive for two years in this room. It had kept him just good enough to lose on cue and survive to lose again. It had been a cage in more ways than one.Reaper stepped in and threw a
