Theo sat at his laptop staring at $5,000. Just the number that would solve all his problems.
That's what he owed the Crimson Fang gang. Five thousand dollars that might as well have been five million for someone who worked minimum wage at a convenience store.
He'd spent the past two days trying to figure out legitimate ways to get the money. Extra shifts at work would take months. A loan required credit he didn't have. Selling everything he owned wouldn't cover a tenth of it.
Which left illegitimate options.
Theo pulled up the search he'd been avoiding "Riverside City underground fighting."
The first few results were MMA gyms and boxing clubs. Legal and Safe.
'Useless.'
But buried on the third page of results was a forum post from six months ago
"Looking for REAL fights in Riverside. Not that regulated sports BS. Heard there's an underground scene in The Narrows. Anyone know how to get in?"
The top reply was brief, If you have to ask, you're not ready. But if you're serious, go to Sullivan's Bar on Saturday night... Wear red. Someone will find you."
Theo checked the date. Today was Friday. Sullivan's Bar was in The Narrows, the same district where Grimm's shop was located.
His enhanced hearing picked up his mother coughing in the next room. She was getting worse.
He closed the laptop.
The decision had already been made.
The next night, Theo stood outside Sullivan's Bar wearing a red hoodie he'd borrowed from a donation bin. The bar was a run-down dive in the worst part of town, the kind of place where asking too many questions got you hurt.
He pushed through the door into a haze of cigarette smoke and stale beer. The bar was packed despite the late hour, full of hard-looking men and women who radiated danger.
Theo made his way to the bar, trying to look confident. His enhanced senses were screaming at him. At least three people in this room weren't fully human. He could smell it, something wild and predatory beneath their human scent.
More werewolves? Other supernaturals?
"You lost, kid?" The bartender was a massive man with scars crossing his face like a roadmap.
"I'm looking for fights," Theo said, keeping his voice steady. "Real ones."
The bartender's eyes flicked to Theo's red hoodie, then to someone over Theo's shoulder. "That so? You look like you'd break in a stiff wind."
"Looks can be deceiving."Theo replied.
A hand clamped down on Theo's shoulder, and he turned to face a man who looked like he'd been carved from granite. Bald, tattooed, and smiling in a way that promised violence.
"Fresh meat," the man said. "I like it. Come with me."
Theo followed him through a back door, down a set of stairs, and into a basement that opened into something much larger than should have been possible. The space extended beyond the bar's footprint, clearly connecting to other buildings through hidden passages.
The underground arena. The room was circular, about thirty feet across, with a chain-link cage in the center. Rows of spectators surrounded it, shouting and placing bets. The air smelled of sweat, blood, and that same wild scent Theo had picked up upstairs, but stronger.
In the cage, two fighters were tearing each other apart. Literally. One of them had claws extended, raking across his opponent's chest. The other's eyes glowed yellow as he retaliated with inhuman speed.
Supernatural fighters.
"Welcome to The Pit," the bald man said. "I'm Vance. I run things down here." He studied Theo with calculating eyes. "You sure you want to do this? You don't look like much."
"I need the money," Theo said simply.
"Don't we all." Vance pulled out a tablet. "Entry f*e is two hundred dollars. You win, you get your f*e back plus sixty percent of the betting pool. You lose, you get medical bills and maybe a coffin."
"What if I don't have two hundred?"
Vance smiled. "Then you fight in the Desperate Division. No entry f*e, but you only get forty percent of the pool. And your opponents..." He gestured to the cage where one fighter had just knocked the other unconscious. "Well, they're not exactly beginners."
Theo watched as the loser was dragged from the cage, blood trailing behind him. His enhanced vision caught the wounds already starting to heal.
Supernatural healing. Like his own.
"I'll take the Desperate Division," Theo said.
"Your funeral." Vance tapped on his tablet. "Name?"
"Theo."
"Just Theo? No last name, no fight name?"
"Just Theo."
Vance shrugged. "Fine. You're in the next rotation. Three fights tonight. Win all three, you walk out with about fifteen hundred if the betting goes well. Lose..." He didn't finish the sentence.
Theo was led to a waiting area where other fighters prepared. Most ignored him, but a few looked over with expressions ranging from pity to amusement.
"First time?"
Theo turned to find a girl about his age, maybe nineteen, with black hair streaked with purple and more piercings than he could count. She was wrapping her hands with tape, her movements precise and practiced.
"That obvious?" Theo asked.
"You're not bleeding yet. Give it twenty minutes." She grinned, showing teeth that were slightly too sharp. "Name's Raven."
"Theo."
"Well, Theo, let me give you some free advice. Don't try to win pretty. Don't showboat. And whatever you do, don't hold back when they tell you to stop. Down here, mercy gets you killed."
"You a werewolf?" Theo asked quietly.
Raven's eyes flashed amber for just a second. "Smart and observant. That'll help you survive. Maybe." She finished wrapping her hands. "Yeah, I'm a wolf. Born, not bitten. And before you ask, I fight here because my pack kicked me out and I need to eat."
"Why'd they kick you out?"
"Long story. But the short version? I wouldn't bend the knee to an asshole alpha." She stood, rolling her shoulders. "You're up next, fresh meat. Try not to die. I've got money riding on the over-under for how long you last."
"How long did you bet?"
"Under two minutes." She winked and walked away.

'Great,' Theo thought. 'Even the system knows this is dangerous.'
Vance appeared at his side. "You're up. Try to make it interesting, yeah? The crowd likes underdogs."
Theo was led into the cage. The chain-link door slammed shut behind him with a metallic clang that sounded like a death sentence.
His opponent was already waiting. A man in his mid-twenties, built like a linebacker, with gang tattoos covering his arms and a smile that said he enjoyed hurting people.
"You're the fresh meat?" the man laughed. "This is gonna be quick."
The crowd roared. Money changed hands. Heavy odds were being called out favoring Theo's opponent.
Vance's voice boomed over a speaker. "Fighters ready! Standard rules apply.....fight until knockout, submission, or I stop it. No weapons, no outside interference. Transformations limited to partial only." He paused for dramatic effect. "Fight!!!"
The tattooed fighter rushed forward immediately, faster than any normal human should move.
Shifter, Theo realized. Maybe a bear or something similar based on his bulk.
The man's fist came at Theo's head like a wrecking ball. Theo's enhanced agility kicked in, and he slipped the punch by inches. The follow-up left hook was faster, catching him in the ribs.
Pain exploded through Theo's side, but not as bad as it should have been. His Enhanced Physiology was already working, mitigating the damage.
The fighter grinned. "Got some toughness. Good. I hate it when they fold too quick."
He pressed forward with a combination of jab, cross and uppercut. Theo blocked the first two but took the uppercut on the chin. Stars exploded in his vision, and he stumbled back against the cage.
The crowd was screaming. Someone was yelling "Finish him!"
Theo's bloodlust meter spiked: 50/100.
The beast inside him snarled, demanding he fight back. His fingers tingled as his claws wanted to extend.
'No,' Theo forced himself to focus. 'Partial transformation only. Control it.'
The fighter charged again, but this time Theo was ready. He ducked under the haymaker and countered with a punch to the ribs, putting his enhanced strength behind it.
The impact made a satisfying crack.
The fighter's eyes widened in surprise and pain. "What the..."
Theo didn't give him time to recover. He pressed forward, mixing punches with his newfound speed and strength. His opponent blocked some, but Theo was faster, hitting three times for every one that was blocked.
Bloodlust: 55/100.
The fighter transformed partially, his arms thickening, brown fur sprouting, claws extending. He was definitely a bear shifter.
"My turn," the man growled, swinging with his enhanced strength.
Theo took a calculated risk. He extended his own claws mid-dodge, raking them across the shifter's extended arm.
The crowd went wild as blood sprayed
The shifter roared in pain and fury, but Theo was already moving. He ducked inside the bear's guard and delivered an uppercut that would've been impossible for normal human Theo.
The shifter's head snapped back. He stumbled.
Theo didn't hesitate. He swept the man's legs and followed him down, raining punches until the shifter's arms dropped and his eyes rolled back.
"Stop!" Vance's voice cut through the noise. "Winner: Theo!"
The crowd erupted. Half in celebration, half in anger at losing their bets.
Theo stood, retracting his claws, and backed away from his unconscious opponent. His heart was pounding, adrenaline singing through his veins.
He'd won.
[Fight 1 Complete: Victory]

[Current EXP: 35/100]
[Bloodlust +8]
[Current Bloodlust: 63/100]
Sixty-three. Getting dangerous.
Raven was waiting when Theo exited the cage. "Under two minutes, huh?" Theo said.
She laughed. "I stand corrected. You've got some skill. Or you got lucky. We'll see which in your next fight."
Theo's next opponent was a woman who moved like water. A shifter of some aquatic variety, maybe. She was faster than the bear, more technical, but Theo's raw power and enhanced abilities gave him the edge. The fight lasted longer, four brutal minutes, but ended the same way. Theo victorious.
Bloodlust at 71/100.
The third fight was against another werewolf, a bitten one. Theo could tell from the sloppy partial transformation. The fight was savage, both of them bleeding and clawing at each other while the crowd screamed for more violence.
Theo's wolf was howling inside him, demanding to be let out fully. His bloodlust hit 85/100.
He was losing control.
'Focus,' Theo told himself. 'Just a little longer.'
The other werewolf lunged, and Theo met him head-on. They grappled, claws tearing at each other, until Theo managed to get behind him and lock in a chokehold.
The werewolf thrashed, desperate, but Theo held on with grim determination. Seconds ticked by. The thrashing weakened.
Finally, the werewolf went limp.
"Stop! Winner: Theo!"

Theo stumbled out of the cage, his body screaming in pain. He was covered in cuts, bruises, and blood which most of it was not his own. His Enhanced Physiology was already working, knitting wounds closed, but it would take time.
And his bloodlust was at ninety. Dangerously close to the threshold.
Vance appeared, grinning. "Not bad, kid. Not bad at all. The crowd loved it." He handed Theo a wad of cash. "Eighteen hundred, as promised. You want to fight again next week?"
Theo took the money with shaking hands. "Maybe."
"Smart answer. You've got potential, but you're also reckless. That bloodlust of yours was spiking.....I could smell it. Another fight tonight and you'd have lost control." Vance clapped him on the shoulder. "Go home. Heal up. Come back when you're ready."
Theo nodded and headed for the exit, counting the money as he walked. Eighteen hundred dollars. Not enough to pay the full debt, but enough to show the Crimson Fang he was serious about paying.
It would buy him time.
"Hey, Theo!"
He turned to find Raven jogging to catch up.
"Nice work tonight. For a fresh wolf, you handled yourself well." She pulled out her phone. "Give me your number. The Pit's always looking for fighters, and you could use someone to show you the ropes. Plus, I know people. Might be useful."
Theo hesitated, but exchanged numbers with her. In this new world, allies could mean the difference between survival and death.
"Thanks," he said.
"Don't mention it." Raven's expression turned serious. "But word of advice? Get that bloodlust under control before your next fight. You were seconds away from a full transformation in there. That breaks Masquerade rules, and the Council doesn't fuck around with violations."
"I know," Theo said quietly.
"Good. Then maybe you'll live long enough to become actually dangerous." She waved and disappeared back into the crowd.
Theo climbed the stairs back to street level, emerging into the cool night air. His body ached, his bloodlust was dangerously high, and he'd just participated in an illegal supernatural fight club.
But he had money. He had a new skill. And he'd proven to himself, if no one else that he could survive in this world.

Dangerous Questions
The day after the Council meeting, Theo went to school exhausted but wired. He'd leveled up to 3, which meant his stats had increased again, but it also meant the system was pushing him harder. His daily quests now required even more, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, seven miles of running, and forty-five minutes of meditation. He'd completed them all before dawn, then caught two hours of sleep before dragging himself to school. But sleep deprivation didn't matter much with Enhanced Physiology at Level 3. His body recovered faster, needed less rest. Still, his mind felt foggy as he navigated the crowded hallways."Theo!"He turned to find Sarah Chen walking toward him with determined purpose. She wore jeans and a school newspaper t-shirt, her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail, and carried a messenger bag stuffed with notebooks.'Not now,' Theo thought. His bloodlust was already at 52/100 from residual anger about Marcus Kane Jr, and dealing with Sarah's questions was the last thing he nee
The Council Summons
Three days of training with Grimm had taught Theo that he knew absolutely nothing about being a werewolf. Each night, he'd arrive at midnight and leave at dawn, his body aching and his mind stuffed with information. Bloodlust control exercises. Combat forms. Transformation techniques. Pack dynamics. Supernatural politics. The history of werewolf bloodlines.Grimm was a relentless teacher, pushing Theo harder each session. But it was working. His bloodlust control had improved dramatically. He could now manage spikes up to 70/100 without losing himself. His combat forms were becoming second nature. First Lesson
Theo woke to sunlight streaming through his window and the smell of bacon cooking. He sat up, momentarily disoriented. His mother hadn't cooked breakfast in months, she'd been too weak to stand at the stove for more than a few minutes. He rushed to the kitchen and found her at the counter, humming softly as she flipped eggs. She looked better than she had in weeks. Her skin had color and her movements were steady."Mom?"She turned with a smile that made Theo's chest tighten. "Good morning, baby. I hope you're hungry.""You're cooking.""I found the money." Her eyes were wet. "Theodore, I don't know what you did, but.....""Don't ask," Theo said quickly. "Just... use it. Get the treatment. Please."She crossed the room and pulled him into a hug. "I already called the clinic. I have an appointment this afternoon." She pulled back, studying his face. "Are you in trouble?""No mom... I promise." It wasn't entirely a lie. The debt was paid, Blake had been scared off, and Grimm was helping
The Beast Within
Theo made it three blocks before he realized Blake was still following him.His enhanced senses picked up the familiar heartbeat, cheap cologne mixed with fear-sweat, and sneakers trying too hard to be quiet on wet pavement.'Stupid,' Theo thought, his bloodlust ticking up to 91/100. 'He saw me at The Pit.'The smart move would be to confront Blake now. But Theo's bloodlust was already dangerously high from three brutal fights. One more spike and he'd lose control completely.'Just get home,' Theo told himself. He picked up his pace through back alleys. Blake kept coming anyway.Theo turned into a dead-end alley. The same one where the wolf had bitten him. He stopped and waited.Blake appeared at the entrance, phone in hand, camera pointed at Theo."I knew it," Blake said, voice shaking. "I fucking knew something was wrong with you. That wasn't normal back there. The way you moved....""Put the phone away, Blake," Theo said quietly."Or what?" Blake's fear was obvious, but desperation

Grimm's Lesson
Theo locked the shop door and flipped the sign to Closed as instructed, his heart pounding. Every instinct screamed that he was putting himself in danger by being alone with this stranger. But those same instincts told him that Grimm was different. Dangerous, yes, but not to him. Not yet, anyway."Good," Grimm said, moving around the counter. "Now, let me see it.""See what?""Your claws, pup. Extend them."Theo hesitated for only a moment before focusing on that wild heat in his chest. The transformation came easier this time, his fingernails darkening and extending into curved black claws.Grimm stepped closer, studying Theo's hands with the critical eye of an expert examining fine craftsmanship. "Hmm. Clean transformation. No trembling. You've already practiced, haven't you?""The system gave me a quest," Theo said. "I had to practice claw extension ten times."The old man's eyebrows rose. "System?.....Interesting.... The wolf's gift runs deeper than I thought." He gestured for The
