1.2 Driver of the Dead II

Driving on the empty highway, Xavier glanced at the front mirror and looked at the cadaver bag which contains the corpse.

This is the 120th corpse that he will deliver ever since he worked in Fugito mansion. It's been a year, but the fear is always there.

To be alone inside the car with a corpse requires courage. Clutching his hand around the wheels, Xavier took a deep breath.

“You are the 120th corpse that I will transport. What is your name? Do you have a family? What was your job?” Xavier asked even if he knows that the dead won't answer him.

This is his way to get rid of his fear. At the same time, mourned for the victim of another cruelty.

Xavier was always curious why there are so many people dying in that place. But for the sake of money, he never asked anything. He abandoned his moral to be an accomplice of a crime.

Heaving a sigh, Xavier glanced at the black cadaver bag on the back seat through the front mirror.

As soon as he looked at the bag, he saw it moving.

His eyes widened with a gasp.

Feeling the chill creeping on his skin, Xavier peered at the mirror without  blinking his eyes. He was hoping he was only imagining things in his head. But the second time that corpse moved, he stepped on the brake.

Ssssssssssssss!

The wheels hissed on the road, as the car stopped at full speed.

Catching his breath, Xavier’s hands trembled on the steering wheel.

‘What should I do? The person inside the bag is not dead yet!’

Xavier had already imagined this situation. What would he do if the person who is supposed to be dead was still alive?

The boss only said one thing.

‘Kill it.’

With that in mind, Xavier opened the glove-box of the car. He picked up the knife hidden inside the compartment with a quivering heart.

Holding his breath, Xavier slowly looked behind him.

Everything will be okay as long as he can kill the survivor.

Xavier unbuckled his seat-belt. He leaned closer to the cadaver bag and, with his free hand, he reached for the zipper.

He wanted to make sure if the corpse was still alive, yet, he felt so guilty seeing its face. Can he kill someone who was desperate to survive?

Therefore, Xavier did not unzip the bag and decided to kill the person without seeing its face.

“I am sorry,” Xavier whispered. “I am really sorry!”

He raised the knife and was about to thrust it into the cadaver but… Xavier’s hands stopped in mid-air.

He couldn’t kill.

While thinking of his loving wife and son, Xavier could not kill a person with his own hands.

He let go of the knife and threw it away.

Xavier looked at the blank space while planning what to do next. If he escapes without finishing his contract, the boss will kill him and his family. If he lets the victim live, the ending is still the same.

Kring~ Kring~

Xavier turned his head to his cell phone that was in front of the compartment. His eyes widened when he saw his friend’s name on the screen.

Frederick is calling!

‘That’s it! I can ask for Frederick’s help!’

He quickly grabbed his phone and answered the call in haste.

“F-Frederick, listen to me. I need your help. The corpse for…”

[“XAVIER! WHERE ARE YOU?!”]

“W-What? Well, I…”

[“THE BOSS IS LOOKING FOR YOU!”]

“For me? Why?”

[“ THE MADAM TOLD HIM THAT YOU TRIED TO RAPE HER! SIR CESAR WAS SO MAD HE ASKED HIS MEN TO ABDUCT YOUR FAMILY RIGHT NOW!”]

Xavier dropped his phone onto the floor and glanced at the cadaver bag behind him.

For a year, he became the driver of the dead. But tonight, he and his family might ride in the same car.
