Ryker woke to the taste of blood and rust coating his tongue. His head throbbed with a deep, rhythmic pulse that matched the distant hum of failing generators somewhere in the walls. Cold, cracked concrete pressed against the side of his face. He tried to push himself up, but heavy restraints bit hard into his wrists and ankles, holding him spread-eagle on the ritual platform. Every bruise from the beating screamed in protest as he tested the bonds.

The abandoned Culling Arena stretched out around him, vast and decaying under stuttering red emergency lights. Twisted spirit-metal frameworks loomed overhead like the ribs of some long-dead beast. Old bloodstains darkened the floor in irregular patches, silent witnesses to years of failed vessel trials.

Pain radiated from his ribs and jaw. The enforcers had not been gentle. Cheap neural dampeners clamped tightly to his temples, blocking most of his implants and leaving only a faint, irritating static buzz in his skull. He was cut off from the Wild Net, isolated and vulnerable.

Footsteps echoed from the shadows. Ryker lifted his head slowly, wincing at the sharp spike of pain in his neck.

Lira stood a few meters away, arms crossed tightly over her tailored Helix coat. Up close, she looked exhausted. Dark shadows haunted her eyes, and a faint tremor ran through her fingers as she gripped her own arms. The confident corporate executive mask she usually wore had cracked badly.

"Ryker," she said quietly. Her voice carried the clipped tone from her earlier message, but something softer, more fragile, hid underneath it.

"You set me up." The accusation scraped out of his bruised throat, raw and bitter. "All that encrypted bullshit about needing my help. Beast Code. Whatever the hell that is. You fed me straight into their hands like a lamb to slaughter."

Lira glanced nervously toward the enforcers standing guard at the edge of the glowing ritual circle. Fresh runes had been carved into the concrete around him, mixing ancient spirit sigils with pulsing digital code that hurt to look at directly. "I didn't have a choice. They took my sister three weeks ago. She's in one of their refinement labs, undergoing forced compatibility trials. If I didn't bring you in, they promised they would terminate her. Permanently."

Ryker let out a bitter laugh that turned into a painful cough. Blood flecked his lips. "And I'm supposed to believe that? After three years of silence? You chose this life, Lira. You walked away from me and the underdistricts while you climbed their shiny corporate ladder. Now you're surprised when it demands payment?"

Her eyes finally met his. For a moment the old connection flared between them, sharp and painful like a live wire. Memories rushed in uninvited: late nights laughing in cramped pods, her fingers tracing idle patterns across his skin, the way she used to say his name like it meant something. "You think I wanted any of this? Every single day I watch them break people just like you. Incompatible vessels thrown into these same culling pits for data and entertainment. I told myself if I got high enough in the company, I could change things from the inside. But the deeper I go, the more rotten it gets."

One of the enforcers stepped forward, a hulking brute with scaled forearms and glowing feline eyes that reflected the red lights. His voice rumbled with an unnatural layered growl. "Enough chatter, Vale. The Director wants the procedure started immediately. This ghost is the perfect test subject. Incompatibles sometimes trigger unique reactions in the Code. Should be entertaining to watch."

They dragged Ryker roughly into the exact center of the ritual circle. Pain lanced through his body as they activated the runes with a low, vibrating hum. Data streams began flooding his damaged implants, burning through his nerves like molten wire injected directly into his spine. He arched against the restraints, teeth gritted so hard he thought they might crack.

Lira moved closer to the edge of the circle, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "I'm sorry. I tried to warn you in the message without giving it away. The Beast Code project, it's not what Helix claims. It was supposed to create the ultimate adaptable vessel, but it doesn't just bond with the host. It rewrites them from the inside out. They buried the entire program after the first trials went catastrophic, but now they're desperate and restarting it."

"Shut your mouth," the lead enforcer snarled. He backhanded her hard across the face, sending her stumbling backward. A thin line of blood trickled from the corner of her lip. "Your only job was to deliver the subject. Nothing more. Keep talking and we'll put you in the next circle."

Ryker's vision blurred with rage. He strained against the restraints, muscles burning. "Don't you dare touch her again."

The enforcer laughed, a wet, predatory sound. "Listen to the pathetic ghost trying to play hero. You're nothing but a failed vessel. No spirit root. No power worth harvesting." He leaned in close, his hot breath reeking of chemicals and beast musk. "But the Code doesn't care about any of that. It takes what it wants. And tonight, it wants you."

They injected him with something cold and viscous straight into his neck. Fire immediately spread through his veins, racing toward his heart. His muscles seized violently. Something ancient and alien stirred deep in his chest, something that should never have existed in a reject like him.

"No..." Ryker gasped, fighting against the rising tide. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs. The Code pulsed in response, alien and hungry, probing at the edges of his mind.

Lira watched from the edge of the circle, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime and blood on her face. She looked utterly torn, caught between stepping forward to help him and running for her own life. "Ryker, hold on. Just hold on a little longer. Please."

The enforcers activated the full ritual. Code streams poured into him in a roaring flood, trying to force a bonding that the System had declared impossible years ago. Pain exploded behind his eyes. His bones felt like they were cracking open from the inside.

The Beast Code awakened.

It whispered in his fading consciousness, soft and seductive, wearing Lira’s voice like a cruel, intimate echo. Stop fighting what you are.

Ryker screamed as the first true fracture began to tear through him.

  • Seeds of the Next Generation

The mist over Veil’s Edge never lifted. It clung to the stilt houses and swaying bridges like a living thing, muffling sounds and hiding threats. Ryker moved through the narrow walkways with Lira at his side, both of them keeping their hoods low. The meeting with Mara had given them a new lead: a resistance cell operating out of an old spirit refinery on the far side of the island. But Ryker’s mind was elsewhere. The Code had been whispering more frequently since the barge. Not the violent commands from before, but something subtler. Seductive. It spoke of legacy. Of continuation. Of a future where the fractures became the new normal."You have been quiet since we left the tavern," Lira said, glancing at him. "Is it getting worse?"Ryker forced a nod. "It is always there now. Like background static that never turns off."They reached the refinery under cover of night. The structure was half collapsed, overgrown with glowing spirit moss. Mara waited inside with three other ghosts. All

  • New Fractures

Ryker stood on the rusted deck of the half-sunken barge, rain soaking through his jacket as he stared at the dark water. The faint cyan glow beneath the surface had vanished, but he could still feel it. The evolved echo was gone, yet something of it remained inside him. A new presence. Stronger. Patient.Lira stepped up beside him, pistol still in her hand. "It is dead, right? Tell me you killed it.""I tore it apart," Ryker said quietly. His voice still carried that faint layered echo. "But it is not over. It told me they are coming for you next. The mother."Lira’s face tightened. She touched the faint code lines near her wrist. "Then we keep moving. Rust Haven is not safe anymore. We head to the outer islands. There are free zones there where Helix has less control."They gathered their few supplies in silence and slipped off the barge before dawn. The floating district of Rust Haven was waking up around them. Fishermen and scrap divers moved through the docks while low-level ghost

  • Lingering Code

Ryker and Lira moved through the lower sprawl of the archipelago for three days, never staying in one place longer than a night. They used old smuggling routes known only to ghosts and paid discreet contacts with the last credits from Lira’s emergency stash. The rain never stopped, but it felt different now. Cleaner somehow. Or maybe that was just the exhaustion talking. They finally found temporary shelter in a derelict cargo barge anchored off the edge of a smaller floating district called Rust Haven. The vessel was half sunk and forgotten, its lower decks flooded but the upper levels dry enough to hide in. Ryker sat on a rusted container overlooking the dark water, watching distant neon lights reflect across the waves. His fractured skin no longer glowed as brightly, but the marks remained like permanent tattoos of what he had become.Lira approached quietly and sat beside him. She had changed into plain traveler clothes scavenged along the way. The faint code lines near her eyes h

  • Fractured Dawn

The upper maintenance tunnels felt strangely quiet after the chaos of the Deep Wild. Ryker leaned heavily against the cold metal wall, his body trembling from exhaustion and the lingering aftershocks of the Crucible. The fractures across his skin had stopped spreading, but they remained glowing faintly cyan under the flickering emergency lights. His left arm still felt wrong, heavier, as if the beast inside had claimed permanent territory.Lira stood beside him, one arm wrapped around his waist for support. Blood stained her Helix coat, and faint code lines traced delicate patterns near her temples. She looked exhausted, but alive. More importantly, she still looked like herself."We made it out," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "The main nexus is collapsing. The Code should be contained."Ryker nodded slowly. He could still feel faint echoes of the whispers in the back of his mind, but they were distant now. Dying. "Should be is not the same as is."They moved carefully through the

  • Heart of the Fracture

The Crucible swallowed Ryker whole. Tendrils of glowing code wrapped around his body like living chains, lifting him off the ground and pulling him deep into the pulsating heart of the structure. The world outside vanished in an instant. Pain unlike anything he had ever endured tore through every nerve ending. His skin burned as the fractures spread at terrifying speed, covering his chest, his arms, and crawling up his neck toward his face.Inside the Crucible there was no up or down. Only an endless digital void filled with fragments of broken memories and screaming echoes. Ryker floated in the center of it, his body suspended while his mind fractured into a thousand pieces.Welcome home, father, the Beast Code whispered. This time the voice was not just Lira’s. It was his own voice multiplied by hundreds of versions. You have fought well. Now become what you were always meant to be.Ryker screamed as visions assaulted him. He saw himself as the first echo, tearing through a Helix pa

  • The Crucible

The elevator platform settled with a final groan at the bottom of the shaft. Ryker stepped off first, his boots crunching on shattered glass and broken spirit circuitry. The vast underground chamber stretched out before them like the ruined heart of some forgotten god. Massive columns of fused metal and organic growth rose toward a ceiling lost in darkness. Pulsing veins of raw cyan energy ran through the walls, feeding into the colossal structure at the center of the room. The Crucible. It towered over everything, a nightmarish fusion of ancient spirit core and forbidden code architecture. Its surface writhed slowly, like breathing flesh covered in moving digital runes. Waves of power rolled off it, pulling at the Beast Code inside Ryker like a magnet.Lira moved beside him, her pistol held ready. Her face was pale in the flickering light. "This is where it all started. The first successful fusion between spirit beasts and self evolving code. They thought they could control it."Ryke
