Agony unlike anything Ryker had ever known tore through his body like molten wire injected straight into his bones. He convulsed against the restraints, back arching so violently that something in his spine popped. His veins burned, lighting up beneath his skin in branching rivers of glowing cyan code that pulsed in time with his frantic heartbeat. Every cell felt like it was being rewritten, torn apart, and stitched back together by something ancient and merciless.
The enforcers stumbled backward, their confident sneers melting into shock. "What the hell is this?" one shouted, raising his weapon. "The Code wasn't supposed to activate this fast on a reject like him!"
Ryker screamed through gritted teeth as another wave slammed into him. His left arm bulged grotesquely, muscles ripping and reforming with wet, audible cracks. Razor-sharp claws burst from his fingertips, black and gleaming with ethereal energy. The pain was blinding, but beneath it surged something raw and powerful, flooding his system like a drug he never wanted.
The restraints snapped with a metallic screech. Ryker collapsed to the floor for a split second, then rose on unsteady legs that felt both his own and utterly alien. The Code whispered inside his skull, soft and intimate, wearing Lira’s voice like a stolen memory. Stop fighting what you are, Ryker. Let it in.
"Get the hell out of my head," he snarled.
The nearest enforcer fired. The shot burned across Ryker’s shoulder, but the pain only fed the mutation. He moved faster than thought, driven by predatory instincts that flooded his mind with violent clarity. Claws slashed forward in a brutal arc, tearing through armored plating as if it were wet paper. Hot blood sprayed across the ritual circle, glowing faintly with traces of the same code now running through his own body.
Chaos erupted. The lead enforcer, the one with scaled forearms and glowing feline eyes, roared and charged. Ryker met him head-on, slamming the man into the cracked concrete with unnatural strength. Fangs lengthened in his mouth as he tore out the enforcer’s throat in one savage motion. The metallic taste of blood flooded his senses, both sickening and strangely satisfying.
Two more enforcers opened fire. Bullets grazed his side, but Ryker was already spinning, claws raking across one man’s chest. The enforcer collapsed, gurgling through a ruined throat. The last guard turned to flee toward the arena exit, screaming into his comm unit for immediate backup. "Subject is active! Repeat, Beast Code is fully awake! Send everything!"
Ryker let him go. He staggered toward the edge of the ritual circle where Lira stood frozen, her face pale under the flickering red lights. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of horror and something dangerously close to awe.
"Ryker..." she breathed, taking an involuntary step back. "Your face. The fractures..."
He lifted a trembling hand, half-clawed, and touched his cheek. The skin felt wrong, like shattered glass with light leaking through the cracks. A puddle at his feet reflected a nightmarish version of himself: one eye still human and desperate, the other burning with cold predatory code. Glowing veins traced across his neck and jaw like living circuitry.
"Run," he rasped. His voice came out layered, inhuman, echoing with the Code’s resonance. "They’re coming for both of us now. Get out of here, Lira."
Alarms wailed across the massive arena as corporate response teams mobilized. Red warning lights strobed violently. Ryker bolted into the pouring rain outside, legs pumping with power he had never possessed. The night air hit his mutated skin like needles, but he kept moving, leaping over debris and shattered spirit-metal frameworks with terrifying ease.
Behind him, massive holographic wanted broadcasts bloomed across every district of the archipelago, projected high into the stormy sky:
RYKER HALE — EXTREME DANGER. BEAST CODE CONTAMINANT. WANTED FOR MASSACRE IN SECTOR 7. KILL ON SIGHT.
He hadn’t done any of those things. Yet the evidence was already piling up. Somewhere in the city, something wearing his face had already begun to act.
Ryker pushed deeper into the underdistricts, collapsing at last into a flooded maintenance shaft far beneath the stacked pod-buildings. The narrow tunnel reeked of rust and stagnant water. His chest heaved as his body flickered uncontrollably between forms: human skin smoothing over claws, then claws ripping free again. In the dim light of a dying glow-panel, he found a cracked mirror panel bolted crookedly to the wall.
The reflection that stared back was fractured and monstrous. Glowing code veins pulsed across his neck and jaw like living tattoos. One hand still ended in deadly black claws that slowly, painfully retracted into bleeding flesh.
Then he saw it.
A second silhouette appeared behind him in the mirror. A perfect ghostly duplicate of himself, standing just a few paces back, smiling with too many teeth. It tilted its head, eyes glowing the same predatory blue, before flickering like corrupted data and dissolving into swirling static.
The Code whispered once more, soft and possessive. We are only beginning.
Ryker clutched his mutating hand, claws scraping deep gouges into the concrete floor. Rainwater dripped from above, mixing with the blood on his skin.
"What the hell am I becoming?"
