Chapter 18: The First Investigation
The message remained on Evren's phone.
BECAUSE ON YOUR WEDDING DAY, YOU WILL LEARN WHY YOU WERE SENT TO BLACKHAVEN.
Vireya read it twice.
Then a third time.
The rooftop wind moved through her hair, carrying the cold smell of rain from somewhere beyond Boston Harbor.
Neither of them spoke.
Below them, traffic continued to crawl through the streets.
People were going home.
Restaurants were closing.
Office lights were disappearing one floor at a time.
The city was behaving as if nothing had changed.
But Vireya knew better.
She looked at Evren.
"What happened the night you were sent to Blackhaven?"
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
"I don't remember everything."
"How much do you remember?"
He finally looked at her.
"The arrest."
"And before that?"
"Fragments."
"What fragments?"
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
"A car."
Vireya waited.
"Rain."
His voice became quieter.
"Someone arguing."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"What were they saying?"
Evren's jaw tightened.
"I remember my grandfather."
Vireya's eyes narrowed.
"Alistair?"
"Yes."
"What was he doing?"
"Standing outside the house."
Evren paused.
"Watching me leave."
The wind grew stronger.
Vireya looked toward the dark horizon.
"Did he know you were innocent?"
Evren didn't answer.
That was an answer.
She turned back toward him.
"Then we start there."
He frowned.
"Where?"
"Your grandfather."
Evren stared at her.
"You want to question him?"
"No."
She smiled faintly.
"I want to investigate him."
The Decision
They returned to the Valcero estate shortly after midnight.
The mansion was almost completely dark.
Only the entrance hall remained illuminated.
Warm yellow light reflected across the polished marble floor.
A grandfather clock ticked quietly against the far wall.
Evren removed his coat.
Vireya remained near the entrance.
"You should sleep."
"So should you."
"I'll sleep after I find something."
She shook her head.
"You're impossible."
"So you've said."
She looked toward the staircase.
"Where is your grandfather's study?"
Evren looked at her.
"Second floor."
"Show me."
He hesitated.
"Why?"
"Because if we're investigating him, I want to know what we're looking for."
Evren studied her for a moment.
Then nodded.
They climbed the stairs.
The carpet absorbed their footsteps.
The mansion smelled faintly of old wood, polished furniture, and the smoke from the fireplace downstairs.
Evren stopped in front of a dark wooden door.
"My grandfather keeps most family records here."
Vireya looked at the lock.
"Locked?"
"Always."
"Can you open it?"
Evren reached into his pocket.
He produced a small metal key.
Vireya raised an eyebrow.
"You have the key?"
"Grandfather gave it to me years ago."
"Interesting."
He unlocked the door.
The room opened into darkness.
Evren switched on the lamp.
Rows of bookshelves appeared.
Old business records.
Family documents.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
Legal files.
A large desk stood near the windows.
Vireya walked toward the shelves.
"How far back?"
"Decades."
"Blackhaven?"
"Probably."
She turned.
"Probably?"
Evren looked toward the locked cabinet behind the desk.
"That's where he keeps things he doesn't want people to see."
Vireya smiled.
"Then that's where we're going."
The Locked Cabinet
The cabinet was old.
Dark walnut.
Brass handles.
A small mechanical lock sat beneath the center drawer.
Vireya examined it.
"You know how to open these?"
"No."
She looked at him.
"You survived Blackhaven and you don't know how to pick a lock?"
"I said I don't."
"Then what do you know?"
"How to break one."
She stared at him.
"Of course."
Evren placed his fingers around the lock.
Vireya immediately stopped him.
"Wait."
She reached inside the desk drawer.
A small key lay beneath several papers.
She held it up.
"Your grandfather isn't as careful as he thinks."
Evren took the key.
The lock clicked.
The cabinet opened.
Inside were folders.
Old correspondence.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Travel documents.
Vireya began searching.
"Nothing."
Evren opened another folder.
"Business contracts."
Another.
"Property acquisitions."
Another.
Then—
he stopped.
A thin black folder.
No name.
No label.
Only a symbol stamped into the corner.
A crown.
Vireya's breathing slowed.
"That's it."
Evren didn't touch it.
He stared at the symbol.
The same crown.
A blade piercing through its center.
His memory reacted immediately.
A door.
Cold concrete.
Cassius.
A dim corridor inside Blackhaven.
And the symbol on the wall.
Evren closed his eyes.
For half a second, he was there again.
The smell of rust.
The distant sound of chains.
Cassius's voice.
"If you ever see this symbol again, don't trust anyone who recognizes it."
Evren opened his eyes.
Vireya was watching him.
"What happened?"
"I remembered something."
"What?"
"Cassius."
She waited.
"He showed me that symbol."
"Inside Blackhaven?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
Evren picked up the folder.
It was heavier than it looked.
He opened it.
The first page contained a list of names.
VALCERO.
MONTCLAIR.
WESTBRIDGE.
BLACKSTONE.
And beneath them—
BLACKHAVEN.
Vireya stared.
"They're all connected."
Evren turned the page.
A map appeared.
Boston.
New York.
Several shipping routes.
And one isolated point far out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Blackhaven.
Vireya's eyes widened.
"This isn't just a prison."
Evren studied the map.
"No."
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
Another page.
A series of financial transactions.
Large amounts of money.
Private companies.
Security contractors.
Shipping corporations.
Everything led back to one organization.
A name appeared at the bottom.
THE CROWN.
Vireya looked at Evren.
"Who are they?"
He shook his head.
"I don't know."
She pointed to the bottom of the page.
"Look."
A handwritten note.
Four words.
THE BEAST KNOWS NOTHING.
Evren went completely still.
Vireya looked at him.
"They knew about you."
"Apparently."
"Before Blackhaven?"
"Maybe."
She turned another page.
A photograph fell out.
It landed face down on the floor.
Vireya picked it up.
Her expression changed.
"Evren."
He turned.
She showed him the photograph.
It was old.
Five men stood outside a private facility.
Alistair Valcero.
A younger Lucien Montclair.
Another man from Westbridge.
A security officer.
And—
Cassius Veyr.
Evren's eyes hardened.
"Cassius."
Vireya looked at him.
"He was outside?"
"Before I entered Blackhaven."
She turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
September 14 — Five Years Ago.
Evren's face became expressionless.
"That's the day I was arrested."
Vireya's fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Then Cassius knew."
"Yes."
"And your grandfather knew."
"Yes."
"And Lucien?"
Evren looked at the photograph.
"Apparently."
The room became silent.
Then—
footsteps.
Both turned.
Someone was walking down the hallway.
Slowly.
Measured.
Vireya immediately closed the folder.
Evren switched off the lamp.
Darkness swallowed the study.
The footsteps stopped outside.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Vireya held her breath.
The handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Evren stood between the door and Vireya.
His entire posture changed.
Calm.
Still.
Ready.
The door opened.
Alistair stood outside.
He looked at Evren.
Then Vireya.
Then the open cabinet.
His face hardened.
"You shouldn't have opened that."
Evren stepped forward.
"Why?"
Alistair entered.
He closed the door behind him.
The smell of cold night air followed him into the room.
"Because now I can't protect you from what you find."
Vireya stepped forward.
"Protect us from what?"
Alistair looked at her.
"You shouldn't be involved."
Vireya's voice remained steady.
"I'm already involved."
He looked at Evren.
"You don't understand what Blackhaven was."
"Then explain it."
Alistair's silence lasted several seconds.
"It wasn't simply a prison."
Evren's eyes narrowed.
"I know."
"It was a system."
"What system?"
"A place where governments, corporations, criminal organizations, and powerful families could make people disappear."
Vireya's face became pale.
Alistair continued.
"Some prisoners were criminals."
"Some were."
He looked directly at Evren.
"Others were inconvenient."
Silence.
Evren's voice became quiet.
"I was one of them."
Alistair looked away.
"Yes."
Vireya felt the room become colder.
"Why?"
Alistair didn't answer.
Evren stepped closer.
"Why was I sent there?"
"Because someone wanted you removed."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You know more than that."
Alistair looked at him.
"Your father."
Evren froze.
"My father?"
"Your biological father knew."
The words seemed to stop the air.
Evren's expression changed.
"What did he know?"
Alistair's eyes lowered.
"That you had been framed."
Vireya looked at Evren.
He didn't move.
"Then why didn't he stop it?"
Alistair's voice became bitter.
"Because he was dead."
Silence.
Vireya's eyes widened.
Evren stared at his grandfather.
"My father died before I went to Blackhaven."
"Yes."
"Then who ordered my arrest?"
Alistair closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
Evren stepped closer.
"You're lying."
Alistair opened his eyes.
"No."
"Then you're afraid."
The old man's face tightened.
"Yes."
It was the first time he had admitted it.
Evren looked at the Crown folder.
"Of them?"
Alistair nodded.
"Of the Crown."
Vireya asked quietly:
"Who are they?"
Alistair stared at the symbol.
"People who have existed behind powerful families for generations."
"How powerful?"
"Powerful enough that families like ours survive by pretending they don't exist."
Evren's eyes hardened.
"Then why marry me to Vireya?"
Alistair looked at both of them.
His answer came quietly.
"Because someone may have known that the two of you would eventually find each other."
Vireya frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"I don't know."
Alistair turned toward the door.
"But I know one thing."
He stopped.
"The wedding cannot be canceled."
Evren's expression hardened.
"Why?"
Alistair looked back.
"Because if you cancel it now, they'll know you discovered the connection."
Vireya's eyes narrowed.
"So the wedding is a trap."
Alistair shook his head.
"No."
He looked at them.
"The wedding is the bait."
Serena's Investigation
Across Boston, Serena sat alone in her apartment.
A desk lamp illuminated the room.
Files covered the table.
Her notebook was open.
At the center of the page:
EVREN VALCERO.
Underneath:
BLACKHAVEN.
CASSIUS VEYR.
THE CROWN.
MONTCLAIR.
She stared at the names.
Then opened an encrypted database.
She entered Cassius Veyr.
The screen remained blank.
No arrest record.
No criminal history.
No birth certificate.
Nothing.
Serena frowned.
She searched again.
Still nothing.
Then she entered:
Blackhaven — Cassius.
One result appeared.
Restricted.
She clicked.
ACCESS DENIED.
Serena leaned back.
"Who are you?"
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Serena Vale."
A voice spoke.
"You're looking in the wrong place."
Her expression hardened.
"Who is this?"
"The woman you're protecting."
"I'm not protecting anyone."
"You are."
The caller paused.
"You're protecting Vireya Montclair."
Serena sat upright.
"How do you know that?"
"You should stop investigating Evren."
"Why?"
"Because you're already being watched."
The line went dead.
Serena stared at the phone.
Then slowly looked toward her apartment window.
The curtains moved slightly.
She stood.
Her hand went toward her weapon.
The room was silent.
She approached the window.
Pulled the curtain aside.
Nothing.
Just Boston at night.
But across the street—
a black car sat beneath a streetlamp.
Its headlights were off.
Serena's eyes narrowed.
Then the car drove away.
The Decision
Back at the Valcero estate, Alistair left the study.
Evren closed the door behind him.
Vireya remained beside the desk.
Neither spoke.
Finally, she said:
"The wedding is in three weeks."
Evren nodded.
"Yes."
"We're being watched."
"Yes."
"Our families know more than they're telling us."
"Yes."
"And Blackhaven is connected to all of it."
"Yes."
She looked at him.
"Then we have three weeks."
Evren met her gaze.
"Three weeks for what?"
"To find the truth."
A faint smile appeared.
"And if we don't?"
Vireya picked up the photograph of Alistair, Cassius, Lucien, and the others.
"Then we walk into our wedding knowing exactly who we're fighting."
Evren looked at her.
For the first time, he didn't see the heiress everyone called the Beauty.
He saw someone standing beside him.
Someone who wasn't running.
Someone who had looked directly at the darkness surrounding his life and decided to step closer.
He nodded.
"All right."
Vireya extended her hand.
"Partners?"
Evren looked at her hand.
Then took it.
"Partners."
Their fingers remained together for a moment longer than necessary.
Neither pulled away.
Outside, rain finally began to fall against the windows.
And somewhere far away, across the Atlantic, waves crashed against the cliffs of an isolated island.
Blackhaven.
Deep inside the prison, behind layers of concrete and steel, a locked room remained untouched.
On its wall was the same symbol.
A crown.
A blade through its center.
And beneath it—
a photograph.
Evren Valcero.
Taken five years ago.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence:
HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LEAVE.
