Chase hailed a cab, and soon he arrived at Crown Ledger Bank.
True to its name, the bank was a titan of a structure, with tall marble pillars and golden letters above the entrance. It was clear that the city's elite came here to deposit and do all sorts of transactions. Chase walked inside and was immediately met with a sight.
"Please! My business just needs one more month, and it will start producing fruits! You see, I promise you!"
A man was on his knees, begging with his whole heart.
Chase looked the man up and down. He was wearing nothing but a white shirt and boxers. His phone, his remaining suit, and his wallet lay on a desk nearby as if they were being processed.
"No. An extension cannot be granted," a ruthless man in a grey suit said, his arms crossed adamantly. "You have already exceeded your deadline more than three times. We don't grant more extensions. Now the full hammer of judgment will come upon you."
"No, please! I will produce results!"
"Security!" the man called, and two guards grabbed the kneeling man by his arms and lifted him off the ground.
"No! Please, no!" the man cried, thrashing, but he couldn't break free. Afterwards the man in a grey suit accompanied the security men out of the room and the door shut, and Chase heard the man's voice fade off into the distance.
Chase shrugged and made his way to the counter, where a man and a woman were smiling greedily at each other after seeing a notification alert on their screen. Finally, they noticed him.
"Welcome to Crown Ledger Bank. How may we help you?" the woman asked.
"I'm here to collect a loan," Chase said.
"Excellent! We can process it, and the money can be deposited into your company account," the woman said. "May I have your name, please?"
"Chase Locke."
"That is excellent. Please, I'll need your details so the loan can start processing. Before you know it, it will land in your account balance."
"Alright then," Chase said, taking the form the man handed him. He filled it out in five minutes and submitted it back.
The woman looked at the details, and all of a sudden, Chase noticed that she had started to smile with her teeth showing. She looked up at him, then showed the form to her partner, who grinned as well. Chase wondered what the issue was.
"Is anything the matter?" he asked.
"No, sir, nothing at all," the woman said, her smile glimmering. "Just confirming, the loan amount is forty million dollars, correct? After all, for a struggling company like yours, it would be very sad if we had to do to you what we did to that man."
"Yes, it would be better if you walked out that door the way you came in, so you can have peace of mind," the man added. "At least go down and rise in your own company rather than go down in ruins with us."
"Go down in ruins, huh?" Chase said.
"Yes! That man even had a suit to leave behind," the man said. "Look at your clothes, look at your hair. You have nothing on you that can be taken or used as collateral for your struggling company." The woman laughed hysterically.
"So you judge people based on their appearance, and on how their companies are performing, before they can collect loans?" Chase asked.
"But of course. That is why we are a bank. We don't operate on sentiment. We operate on common sense and metrics, and everything points to the fact that you will come back here begging before the month is up," the woman said, sneering.
"Exactly! Did you see the interest on the loan you took? Forty million dollars, at an interest rate of twenty-five percent, payable within one month. As you can see, you are in very big trouble, and now that you've signed the documents, you can't reverse it. Ha!" the man said.
"Yes! Another one, more money for us!" the woman said, and the two of them high-fived.
"Oh, so you two also work on commission, and the more people borrow, the more you get. Correct?" Chase asked.
"Yes, so what? That's our job, and that is why we won't go down like you," the man said.
"Like me?" Chase asked, egging them on.
"Of course. If you want to benefit our bank account, you know what to do," the woman said. "And if you still want to beg, our MD is available. Maybe he can reduce it to twenty-four point nine nine percent." She burst into laughter, and the man followed.
Chase understood the dry joke. There was virtually no difference between twenty-five percent and 24.99 percent. It was only there to pester him.
"Okay then, since you people like money so much, why don't we make your dreams come true?" Chase asked, smiling back.
"What are you talking about?" the woman asked.
"The initial time to pay back the loan was one month, right?"
"Yes," the woman replied. "And that was foolish. You should have asked for an entire year!"
"Even that wouldn't be enough to pay it all off," the man said.
"That is why I want to change the time," Chase said. "One day."
"What?" The woman turned her ear towards Chase as if she hadn't heard properly.
"Did you mean one day, five years from now?" the man asked.
"No. I mean one day. Tomorrow," Chase said. "By tomorrow, I will pay you the full amount in cash or transfer, whichever you want."
"Ha! This is hilarious! Do you think we're fools? Just say you want to run!" the woman said.
"I'm not planning on running, and I will pay the full amount without a single dollar missing," Chase said. "Also, I would like to take the loan at seventy-five percent interest instead."
Both of their jaws dropped.
"WHAT?" they blurted out.
It was the system's criteria for the mission. Chase only shrugged and repeated himself.
"You heard me right."
"Quickly!" the woman told her partner, who began scribbling on the paper Chase had signed. She started typing on the computer in front of her.
A few moments later, Chase's phone buzzed with a notification. Northline Logistics' account had received forty million dollars.
"We've done it!"
"Yes! More money for us!" the woman cried, and they couldn't hide their joy.
"Thank you for being so financially unintelligent!"
"Yes! Instead of digging a hole, you dug a gorge! Ha!"
"See you tomorrow," Chase said, walking away while he listened to them rejoicing behind his back.
The moment he stepped outside the bank, the system screen popped up in front of him.

The next day came almost immediately, and Chase woke to the sound of his phone ringing."Good morning, sir," a man's voice said on the other end. Chase didn't recognize it."Who is this?" Chase asked."My name is Lucas, sir. I am your personal assistant at Northline Logistics. Miss Vanessa just handed the arrangement over to me," he said."Oh, I see. Is there any issue?" Chase asked."Well, sir, there is a company meeting scheduled this morning, and I wanted to know if I should come and pick you up.""Never mind. Tell them I'm coming now," Chase answered, and he got up to get ready.Since he was entering an office, a suit would have been the appropriate thing to wear, but he still didn't have the time or the money for one. So he grabbed his normal grey T-shirt and a pair of jeans. He left the apartment, hailed a cab, and told the driver where to go. The drive wasn't far, and when the cab pulled up in front of the company building, he raised an eyebrow in surprise. The building was big

Chase didn't answer the call the previous night. Instead, he went back to his apartment to rest. The apartment had been put back in order. The floorboard was fixed, the broken furniture was replaced, and a note lay on the table with a receipt showing that his rent arrears had been cleared, down to the last penny. There wasn't a single speck of dust. The next morning came quickly, and Chase was thinking about going to see Lily when the roar of an engine outside pulled him to the window.A Rolls-Royce had stopped in front of his building.Chase was surprised. His neighborhood was run-down, not a place where anyone with money ever came. The sleek black car looked completely out of place, and it immediately sparked the curiosity of the neighbors. The driver hurried around and opened the back door. The woman who stepped out was extremely beautiful. Her hair was combed to the side and held in place with a headband. Her eyes were big and blue, her nose was pointed, and her lips were full. S

Chase took a cab from the hospital back to the restaurant that night. He hadn't thought much of Jerry's message, but he already knew what was waiting for him.The moment he stepped through the front door, he saw it. The restaurant had been arranged like a courtroom. Every table was full, the waiters stood in a line along the wall, and two security men stood at the door, blocking the exit behind him. Jerry had gathered everyone to witness the spectacle. Chase also noticed that the dining guests were going to be part of it."You!" Jerry said, still steaming. "You think you can walk out on me?""Are you always red like a tomato?" Chase asked nonchalantly."You can keep joking if you like, but everyone here is waiting to hear your punishment!" Jerry snapped his fingers, and a waiter held up a long sheet of paper. "Damages to Mr. Silverberg's reputation, lost customers, compensation for the incident, and the restaurant's image. Eighty-five thousand dollars!"He threw the bill onto the floo

Chase didn't waste any time flagging down a cab. Within twenty minutes, he was in front of the hospital. He rushed into the building. Everyone turned to look at him in surprise, but he paid no attention to them. He stopped the first nurse he saw."I need to see the MD right now!""R-right this way, sir," the nurse said, and Chase followed her to the office.Inside, Dr. Evans, the hospital's MD, had a visible worry on his face. It only made Chase's heart sink."How is my sister?" Chase asked. "What is her condition?""We increased the dosage of her regular medication, but it doesn't seem to be working," Dr. Evans said. "We also don't have enough personnel to handle her seizures and continuous monitoring. So we need you to add an additional amount, so that we can afford the specialists and equipment she needs."His assistant nurse, who was already in the room, strolled over and handed Chase the bill.Chase looked at it and was surprised by how much the price had shot up. Everything in the apartment seemed ordinary. But it was because he hadn't adjusted it all. Today should have been the end of the worst day of his life.
