Donald Mccallister did not answer right away, and that pause said more than the smile ever could.
"No." He shook his head, a fraction too fast. "I don't know who Chloe's father is, Mr. Legion. I wouldn't have any reason to know something like that." Lucien Legion sat back and let the silence stretch. He had learned, years ago, standing over patients whose families lied to him about symptoms out of embarrassment or fear, that the truth rarely came out on the first answer. It came out in the space right after it, in whatever the person did with their hands while they waited to see if the lie had landed. Donald Mccallister's hands moved to the folder on his knee, straightening papers that were already straight. "You answered fast." Lucien Legion kept his voice even, almost gentle, the way he talked to nervous patients before a procedure. "Faster than a man usually answers a question he's never once thought about." "I don't follow." Donald Mccallister's jaw tightened, his eyes flicking toward the door for half a second before they came back. "Sure you do." Lucien Legion leaned forward, elbows on his knees, closing some of the distance between them. "A question like that, most people take a second. They frown, they think it over, maybe they get a little offended I'd even ask. You didn't do any of that. You went straight to no." Donald Mccallister's mouth opened, then closed again. For a moment he looked like a man recalculating a route he thought he already knew. "I represent her business affairs, Mr. Legion. Not her personal life. If you're asking whether I keep a list of every man who's ever looked twice at Stacy, then no, I don't, and frankly I resent the implication that I would." "Nobody said list." Lucien Legion tilted his head slightly, watching the color climb up the other man's neck. "I asked one name. You gave me a whole speech instead." Donald Mccallister set the folder down flat on his knee, a small motion, but it looked to Lucien Legion like a man trying to put something between himself and the conversation. "I think we're done here for today." Donald Mccallister's voice had cooled several degrees, all the earlier warmth gone out of it. "The sample, Mr. Legion. Are we doing this or not?" Lucien Legion studied him a moment longer. He had gotten nothing he could hold up in a courtroom, nothing he could repeat to anyone without sounding paranoid, and yet every instinct he had, the same instincts that told him when a chart didn't match a patient's color, when a story didn't match an injury, was screaming that this man knew something he wasn't saying. Arguing wouldn't get it out of him. Not today. "Fine." Lucien Legion straightened up in his chair, some of the sharpness draining out of his posture, replaced by a flat, businesslike calm. "I'll give the sample." Something in Donald Mccallister's shoulders eased, just slightly. "But not through your lab." Lucien Legion held up a hand before the other man could speak. "And not the way you people want to run it." "Excuse me?" "I want an independent collector. Someone with no connection to Stacy, no connection to you, no connection to whatever lab you've already picked out." Lucien Legion counted the points off on his fingers, unhurried. "Chain of custody documented from the second the swab touches my mouth. Sealed in front of a witness who isn't on anybody's payroll. Signed, dated, photographed, and sent to a lab I choose, not the one Stacy's office already has on speed dial." Donald Mccallister's smile came back on, but it looked stiffer this time, stretched thin over something else entirely. "That sounds excessive, Mr. Legion. We're not running a criminal investigation. This is a family matter." "Funny." Lucien Legion's eyes didn't move off his face. "Family matters don't usually need a lawyer showing up at a courthouse to negotiate DNA logistics." That landed. Donald Mccallister's jaw worked once, and for a second the composure slipped just enough for Lucien Legion to see something underneath it that looked almost like worry. "I'll have to run that by Stacy." Donald Mccallister stood, buttoning his jacket, the leather folder tucked back under his arm like a shield. "Independent collection, third party lab, full documentation. That's what you're asking for." "That's exactly what I'm asking for." Lucien Legion stood as well, not offering a hand. "If there's nothing to hide, none of that should be a problem." "Nothing to hide." Donald Mccallister repeated it back slowly, like he was testing the weight of the words in his own mouth. "Of course." He turned toward the door, and for the first time since he'd walked in, he seemed eager to leave, his steps a little quicker than the calm, practiced entrance he'd made an hour earlier. Lucien Legion watched him go, then followed a few paces behind, close enough to see Donald Mccallister pull his phone out before he'd even cleared the waiting room doors. The glass door swung shut behind him, but it didn't latch all the way, and through the narrow gap Lucien Legion heard the low murmur of Donald Mccallister's voice, already talking before the phone could have finished ringing on the other end. Lucien Legion stopped just inside the doorway and listened. "He agreed."Latest Chapter
18: Edwin Lincoln
Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi
17: Name On The Phone
Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations
16: The Hidden Conversation
Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und
15: A Father Without Blood
Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed
14: Painful Decisions
Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo
13: Unverified Truth
Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
