Two days later, Donald Mccallister called with a name and an address, his voice back to its usual polished calm, like the conversation at the courthouse had never happened.

"Ridgeline Diagnostics." He said it the way a realtor described a house, warm and confident. "Fully accredited, used by three different family courts in this state alone. Completely neutral, Mr. Legion. Stacy has no ownership there, no relationship with the staff. You can check the registry yourself."

Lucien Legion had already checked. Twice. The registry came back clean, no obvious ties to Stacy or anyone in her circle, and that alone made him more careful rather than less.

"Fine." He kept his voice flat. "I'll be there Thursday."

"Wonderful." A small pause. "One thing, Mr. Legion. Let's try to keep the process simple this time. In and out, no complications. The staff there are professionals, they know what they're doing."

Something about the word simple caught in Lucien Legion's chest and stayed there.

"Simple's fine." He kept his tone even. "As long as it's documented."

"Of course." Donald Mccallister's voice smoothed over the word like it cost him nothing at all. "Whatever makes you comfortable."

Thursday morning, Lucien Legion arrived at Ridgeline Diagnostics fifteen minutes early, a manila folder of his own tucked under one arm. The lobby looked exactly like every other clinical waiting room he'd ever stood in, gray carpet, framed accreditation certificates, a receptionist typing behind reinforced glass.

Donald Mccallister was already there, standing instead of sitting, checking his watch like a man with somewhere else to be.

"Mr. Legion." He offered a hand. Lucien Legion looked at it a moment before shaking it, brief and businesslike.

"Let's get started." Lucien Legion opened his folder and pulled out a single typed page. "Before anything touches a swab, I want this signed. Chain of custody form. Names, times, signatures, every person who handles the sample from collection to lab intake."

Donald Mccallister's eyebrows lifted, a flicker of surprise breaking through the polish. "You had this drawn up yourself?"

"A lawyer friend helped." Lucien Legion held the page out. "Standard for anything that might end up in front of a judge someday. I assume nobody here has a problem with that."

"Not at all." Donald Mccallister took the page, scanning it quickly, his jaw tightening just slightly at something in the text before he smoothed his face back over. "Very thorough."

"I want a witness in the room when the swab is taken." Lucien Legion nodded toward the reception desk. "Somebody who isn't you, isn't me, and isn't on Stacy's payroll."

"The technician can witness." Donald Mccallister's smile held, though it had gone stiff at the edges. "That should satisfy the requirement."

"I also want photos." Lucien Legion pulled out his phone, holding it up. "Sample sealed, labeled, and photographed before it leaves this room. Time stamp visible."

Donald Mccallister exhaled through his nose, a short, controlled sound, the kind of breath a man let out when he was recalculating how much resistance was worth showing in front of witnesses. "Mr. Legion, I understand the instinct here, I really do, but all this documentation, it starts to feel like you're building a case against someone rather than just running a test."

"Maybe I am." Lucien Legion held his gaze steady. "Depends what the test turns up."

For a second neither of them said anything, the receptionist's typing the only sound in the room.

"Fine." Donald Mccallister's voice dropped a register, something harder moving underneath the smooth surface now. "Photograph whatever you want. Sign whatever you want. Let's just get this done."

A technician in pale blue scrubs called Lucien Legion's name a few minutes later. He walked back with his folder still under his arm, and true to his word, he made the technician sign the custody form, photographed the swab kit before it was opened, photographed his own face for verification, and photographed the sample bag once it was sealed, the barcode and timestamp both clearly visible in the frame.

The technician handled it well enough, patient and unbothered, sliding the sealed bag into a courier envelope and stamping it with the lab's intake number right there in front of him.

"That's it." She smiled, the kind of practiced, pleasant smile that came with the job. "Results in five to seven business days. We'll send them directly to whatever address you designate."

"Mine." Lucien Legion said it plainly. "Not Mr. Mccallister's office. Mine, directly."

"Noted." She wrote it down without argument.

Donald Mccallister was waiting by the front doors when Lucien Legion came back out, arms crossed, that professional smile fixed back in place like nothing about the last twenty minutes had bothered him at all.

"See? Simple." He said it lightly, almost teasing. "No need for all that suspicion, Mr. Legion."

"We'll see." Lucien Legion folded his copy of the custody form and slid it into his jacket pocket, next to the receipt the front desk had printed for him.

They walked out into the parking lot together, an uneasy truce hanging between them, and Donald Mccallister peeled off toward a black sedan with a brief nod, already pulling his phone out before he'd even reached the door.

Lucien Legion sat in his own car a while longer, going through the paperwork one more time out of habit, the same careful read he gave every consent form before a surgery. The custody sheet looked fine. Signatures, times, all accounted for.

Then his eyes dropped to the small printed reference number at the bottom corner of the intake form, the one the technician had stamped in front of him, and he pulled the receipt out of his pocket to compare it against the number printed there.

The two numbers did not match.

Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi

Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations

  • 16: The Hidden Conversation

Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und

  • 15: A Father Without Blood

Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed

Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo

  • 13: Unverified Truth

Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
