Stacy's penthouse sat thirty floors above the city, all white marble and glass, the kind of place built to be photographed rather than lived in. Donald Mccallister found her standing at the window when he arrived, a glass of wine untouched on the counter behind her, her reflection ghosted over the skyline.

"He wants everything documented." Donald Mccallister set his folder down on the counter, loosening his tie. "Chain of custody forms, witnesses, photographs of the sample. I've never seen a man that careful about a DNA swab in my life."

"He's a surgeon." Stacy didn't turn around. "Careful is the whole job."

"Careful is a problem for us." Donald Mccallister rubbed the back of his neck. "The plan we discussed needs room to move, Stacy. Room to adjust a result quietly, without twelve signatures and time stamped photos standing in the way."

Stacy finally turned, and the calm mask she wore for cameras had slipped somewhere on the way up the elevator. What was left underneath looked tired, and colder than tired.

"Then find the room." Her voice stayed level, but there was an edge under it now, something brittle. "I don't care how tight he's made it. This result has to come back the way it needs to come back."

"The way it needs to come back." Donald Mccallister repeated it slowly, watching her. "Say what you actually mean, Stacy."

"You know exactly what I mean." She crossed the room and picked up the wine glass, turning it in her fingers without drinking from it. "The paperwork needs to say Chloe is his daughter. That's all. I'm not asking you to do anything complicated."

"You're asking me to falsify a paternity test." Donald Mccallister kept his voice low, glancing toward the hallway out of habit, though the penthouse was empty except for the two of them. "That's not complicated, Stacy, that's criminal. If anyone traces it back, we're not talking about a bad headline anymore. We're talking about fraud charges. Evidence tampering. My license, gone. Maybe worse for you."

"And if we don't do it?" Stacy set the glass down hard enough that wine slid up the side and nearly spilled over. "Three labs already say Chloe isn't his. If a fourth one confirms it, with all his little signatures and photographs proving nobody tampered with anything, then what? He walks into that divorce with rock solid proof I cheated on him. My lawyers can't spin that story into anything but exactly what it is."

Her voice climbed, cracking at the edges in a way the public had never once heard from her. "Everything I've built. Every endorsement, every role, every ounce of goodwill I've spent twenty years collecting, it all turns into a punchline the second that story breaks. America's sweetheart, caught lying to her husband for sixteen years about whose baby she was carrying. Do you have any idea what that does to a career like mine?"

"I have some idea, yes." Donald Mccallister's jaw tightened. "I've spent a decade building the version of you the public gets to see."

"Then help me protect her." Stacy's eyes were bright, whether with anger or something closer to fear, Donald Mccallister genuinely couldn't tell anymore. "I'm not asking you to hurt anyone. I'm asking you to make sure a piece of paper says what it needs to say."

"That's the thing about evidence, Stacy." Donald Mccallister's voice stayed quiet, almost gentle, the way a man spoke when he was trying to talk someone down off a ledge. "It doesn't care what it needs to say. It only cares what it actually says. The second we touch that file, we've created a second problem sitting right on top of the first one. And problems like that don't stay buried. Someone always finds them eventually."

"Then make sure no one finds it." Stacy's tone flattened into something almost businesslike, all the emotion suddenly tucked back behind a wall. "That's what I pay you for, Donald. Not for lectures on what's dangerous. I already know it's dangerous. Losing everything I've worked for is dangerous too. At least this way I get to choose which danger I'm walking into."

Donald Mccallister studied her for a long moment, the woman he'd represented for a decade, the woman half the country still believed could do no wrong. He had known her long enough to recognize when a conversation was actually already over, when the only thing left to decide was how much of himself he was willing to spend carrying out an order he'd already lost the argument against.

"I'll see what can be arranged." He said it quietly, already reaching for his phone, already hating himself a little for how easily the words came out.

"Quietly, Donald." Stacy picked the wine glass back up, finally taking a sip, some of the earlier brittleness smoothing back over into her usual composed shine. "I don't want to hear about it until it's done."

He left the penthouse twenty minutes later with the weight of the conversation sitting in his chest like something swallowed wrong. Out in the parking garage, sitting behind the wheel of his own car, he stared at nothing for a while before finally starting the engine.

His phone buzzed against the passenger seat just as he pulled out onto the street.

An unknown number. A single message, short and strange.

I work at Ridgeline. We need to talk in person. Not over the phone.

  • 18: Edwin Lincoln

Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi

  • 17: Name On The Phone

Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations

  • 16: The Hidden Conversation

Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und

  • 15: A Father Without Blood

Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed

  • 14: Painful Decisions

Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo

  • 13: Unverified Truth

Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
