Just then, Cecilia’s phone rang.
After answering, she turned to Caiden and said, “Dr. Howard, feel free to walk around. I need to handle something. I’ll catch up with you shortly.”
Caiden nodded. “Of course, Ms. Cecilia. Don’t let me hold you back.”
Within a short period of time, they had become friends, or perhaps more than mere friends.
There was still some time before the auction officially began.
More influential guests continued arriving, all with their eyes on the valuable land of the orphanage.
Before long, the parking area was packed with luxury vehicles and helicopters over the field.
In one of the luxury cars pulled up, Nevan quickly stepped out and made his way toward Maelie’s side, opening the door for her to step out too.
Caiden’s face tightened seeing her. She didn't even look as beautiful to her before, especially now he'd seen Cecilia.
“Maelie, you really know how to make an entrance. Honestly, you’d be a superstar even outside the business world!” Nevan uttered excitedly as he gazed at her. Maelie blushed happily. Cara stepped out of the front passenger seat of the car, hurrying after them.
Cara cut in. “You guys know if that fool would attend?”
“Yes,” Nevan replied quickly. “He told me he'd be here.” He said with sarcasm.
From afar, Caiden watched as Maelie and Nevan chatted and laughed among the crowd. Shaking his head in fury, he turned away from where he stood, about to leave.
Maelie however spotted him. She flagged her hands, shouting. “Caiden… is that you? Wait!” Her aim was to draw everyone’s attention and that she got.
Trying to calm himself. Caiden paused, fists tight before slowly turning to her. “What’s it?”
“What do you want, Ms. Logan?” His voice dragged. His brows twisted in fury.
Maelie’s smile faded. “Caiden… it really is you. A..Are you still upset with me?” Her eyes flickered, her tone was mocking.
Caiden took a breath, suppressing any lingering emotions.
“You must be joking, Ms. Logan. Someone like me has no right to be angry. If that’s all, I’ll leave you to it.”
“Wait, don’t go!” Maelie stepped forward, her tone turning serious."Let's sit together for the auction as people who used to know each other. You know I might not see you again after today?”
Caiden let out a quiet laugh, amused by how little she understood.
Even now, she still believes the same thing.
“Is that the first thing you should say to a doctor who saved your life?”
“Why? When the card is fake? What do you expect me to say? At least it's better than being real.”
Caiden was taken aback.
“Caiden, why are you acting like this? Even if I hurt you, that doesn’t justify breaking the law! Listen to me whether you saved me or not, it doesn't stop you from doing the right thing.”
“After today, don't let us see you again, lest you can still be arrested. Impersonation is a crime.” She said in a low tone, watching Caiden's expression.
Nevan came over, draping his hand over her waist. “Or you will claim it's real?”
At that moment, Cara turned up.
“Maelie, why even waste time talking to him?” Nevan sneered. “A fake nigga showing up at an event like this to impress.”
“He still hasn't attested to the fact the card is fake, so I believe it's real or he does.” She laughed aloud, covering her lips.
Cara confronted him, “Caiden, why are you here? Who let you in?” She turned to Maelie and Nevan. They flapped their hands in a “I don't know” gesture.
“Even Mr. Logan himself refused to give his heir his card for this auction, who then are you to joke with a card like this?”
Caiden smirked, looking away briefly, staring at them with disgust. They were too petite to even answer them.
Looking at his breast pocket, the tip of the card showed.
“Let's make a bet!” Maelie patted his shoulders. “Make the highest mock donation, not the real donation, just the mock and we won't…..” She winked at Nevan and her mom.
“Wouldn't?” Caiden asked, tight-faced.
Tension rocked the space. “Listen, we will expose you to everyone if you don't make the biggest bid!” Nevan blasted him.
Caiden glanced at Nevan coldly. “Didn’t that slap teach you anything?” He even seemed unbothered by Nevan as if he's nothing.
Nevan’s face darkened instantly. “Maelie isn’t here to protect you anymore. Fuck up and we fuck you up!”
Nevan called on the Estate bodyguards nearby and they approached. Just then, a cold yet composed voice cut through the tension.
“My, what a temper. Quite an impressive display… threatening my man like that.”
Cecilia appeared, exuding confidence in a stunning red gown.
She was accompanied by her sister, a well-known real model and the Chief of the Estate bodyguards.
Cecilia's hair was styled elegantly, highlighting her graceful neck and flawless features. She looked breathtaking. Maelie assessed.
Nevan stared at her, completely captivated.
“A-another beauty…” he muttered, nearly losing himself.
“Miss, what do you mean?” He asked.
Cecilia walked up and casually linked her arm with Caiden’s, smiling sweetly.
“I said, he’s my man. Was that not clear enough?”
Nevan snapped out of it, his jealousy flaring.
This man, this so-called nobody, somehow kept attracting women like this.
It felt completely unfair.
“Miss, let me give you some advice. This guy is nothing but a freeloader. Someone like him with a fake card and identity shouldn't come near you. He will scam you.” Nevan said bitterly.
“My Caiden is not a worker. He's Mr. Caiden.” Cecilia replied.
Cara chimed in, “Sweetheart, I don’t know who you are, but you should be careful. He used to live off my daughter. Stay away before he deceives you too.”
Cecilia ignored them entirely and shifted her gaze toward Maelie, flashing a charming smile.
Her instincts had already picked up on the connection between Caiden and this woman.
Maelie met her gaze coldly, the tension between them instantly rising.
“Cady, aren’t you going to introduce me to this beautiful lady who seems to know you so well?” Cecilia asked teasingly, her tone deliberately provocative.
Caiden felt a headache coming on.
He hadn’t expected Caiden to be so to Cecilia for her to casually call him “Cady.”
She was clearly stirring trouble.
“This is the famous Ice Queen of Howard Hospital,” Caiden said with a hint of sarcasm. “Also known as Ms. Maelie Logan, the woman who dumped me.” He uttered, his lips curling with disdain.
Cecilia let out a dramatic laugh. “Oh, so you’re Ms. Logan! No wonder you’re so stunning.” But her facial expression meant the opposite.
Then she added with a playful smile, “I should really thank you. If you hadn’t let Cady go, we might never have found happiness together.”
Caiden grinned. Maelie was hurt. She gawked, likewise Nevan and Cara.
They couldn't believe what they were saying.

Chapter 33
The celebration of the relationship was done at Roman's house. Just Roman, Lena, Carlos and Zara. Roman wanted to make a toast to it and welcome Zara to the family officially. The next few days were good, everything followed the smoother path. Well, until a fine morning. A press story broke out from an anonymous source claiming Roman used political connections to secure the infrastructure deal unfairly. The heading was ghastly. “Roman secures infrastructure deals from frolicking rather than bidding.” The story went on to accuse Roman of being in a relationship with Elara, labelling it as the reason he got the job. Photos of him and Elara in the restaurant were also surfacing. The claims that he was cheating on his wife also surfaced and his image was slowly getting tarnished. The story was of major concern. It wasn't just a business story, but a public and moral one. Roman had always been seen as a moral person and this definitely made people question him. Even though the stor
Chapter 32
In the weeks after Edward Ashford’s arrest, Caiden experienced a silence unlike anything he had known since before the auction. The media moved on from scandal to something closer to praise, framing him as the doctor who had inherited a legacy, uncovered his mother’s truth, and helped bring down a decades-old criminal network. It was the sort of story journalists were quick to embrace, and for the first time, Caiden found he didn’t resist being at its center. But the stillness unsettled him. After so long in constant conflict, he had almost forgotten what it meant to live without it.“You need to relax,” Cecilia said one evening as they sat on the penthouse balcony, watching the sunset spread color across the sky. “The Consortium is finished. Ashford is in custody. The immediate threats are gone. You’re allowed to breathe again.”“There’s still his protégé,” Caiden said. “The woman who delivered the flash drive. We don’t know her identity, or what she’s really after.”“We do know she
Chapter 31
The following morning after the wedding, Caiden stirred before sunrise. Cecilia was still asleep beside him, one hand lightly resting on his chest, her breathing even and calm. He stayed still, watching the faint light of early morning slip through the curtains, his mind turning over everything that had already happened, and everything still ahead. On the nightstand lay the flash drive the unknown woman had delivered. Marcus had spent the night going through it, and a preliminary report was already waiting on Caiden’s phone. He hadn’t opened it yet. For a few hours, he had chosen to keep the war at a distance, just long enough to have one night that belonged entirely to them. Now the night has ended.Caiden eased himself out of bed as quietly as possible, careful not to disturb Cecilia. Despite his effort, she shifted anyway, she always seemed to notice.“Where are you going?” she asked, her voice still thick with sleep.“To go through Marcus’s report,” he said softly. “Go back to bed
Chapter 30
The wedding day came with clear skies and an unseasonably warm breeze. The rooftop garden had been completely transformed, like something out of a fairytale. Glass candles lined the walkways, soft light flickering against the evening air, while white and gold flowers covered every surface in carefully arranged abundance. Somewhere nearby, a string quartet played gently as guests settled into their seats, the music drifting through the open space.Michael had organized security with military-level precision. Every attendee was carefully screened, every supplier thoroughly checked. Plainclothes operatives were placed strategically across the hospital grounds, while FBI agents blended into the guest list. Commander Ellis had even brought in his team from London as a personal favor. If the Consortium intended to strike, they wouldn’t find a ceremony, they would find a heavily fortified stronghold.Caiden stood at the altar with Michael beside him as his best man. For the first time, ther
Chapter 29
The engagement was made public in a quiet way, a brief newspaper notice and an official statement from the hospital’s PR team. After months of intense media attention, Caiden and Cecilia had decided they wanted this announcement to remain personal and low-key.However, the news still spread quickly. Congratulations came in from all parts of Caiden’s circle. Evelyn Cho sent a large bouquet of flowers with a simple note that said, “Finally.” Marcus Webb dropped by Caiden’s office with a premium bottle of whiskey and a grin that seemed impossible to contain. From Dubai, Amir called to offer his blessings and even proposed hosting the wedding at one of his family’s palaces.Even Maelie sent a card. It was simple, handwritten, almost restrained: “Congratulations to you both. Wishing you every happiness.”Caiden read it once, then again, before quietly putting it away. The person she used to be in his life felt like a distant memory now, familiar, yet unreachable. They had both become diffe
Chapter 28
Michael found him the next morning, waiting outside his office with an expression that meant bad news."Edward Ashford is dead."Caiden stopped mid-stride. "How?""His body was found at an estate in Switzerland. Apparent heart attack. The Swiss authorities are calling it natural causes.""You don't believe that.""I don't believe in coincidence." Michael handed him a tablet with the Swiss police report. "He died three days ago, right after our press conference. Right after we released the evidence against him.""He knew we were coming for him. The stress—""Maybe. Or maybe someone else got to him first. Someone who didn't want him talking."Caiden stared at the report. Edward Ashford had been the architect of his mother's murder. The founder of the Consortium. The shadow that had hung over his family for thirty years. And now he was dead before Caiden could face him."There are others still out there," Michael continued. "The Consortium's leadership was never just one man. Ashford was
