He loved her quietly. He healed her when no other doctor could. He stayed up through countless nights just to give her the one thing she wanted most — a child. She planned to marry him. He didn’t do that either. He just smiled, refused the check, and walked out. What Maelie never counted on is that the man she threw away is not who she thinks he is. Chapter 1

Caiden was sitting in his office at the gynecology ward when his fiancee walked in. Behind her, a tall, muscular man dressed in a luxury outfit followed.

Staring closer, it was the son of Sir. Matts, the  hospital’s greatest supplier of pharmaceutical products. At first, he thought he’s here for business plans, so smiled.

“Hey baby,” he rose to greet her but Maelie brought forth her hands, wearing a frown. His wife has never behaved like this. Caiden stumbled back in shock.

“What’s wrong, baby?” He asked.

She stamped the file in her hand on Caiden’s desk. A positive pregnancy result. Caiden glared over it and a wide smile spread across his face. He rushed towards Maelie again thinking it was just her way to surprise him before.

“Waitttt!” She shouted angrily. Caiden stumbled back with even greater shock.

“What’s with the drama, babe?”

“Have you thought about why Nevan is here, right behind me?” She asked in a cold tone.

Caiden’s head spinned. He then looked at Nevan with curiosity. “I thought you brought him here for a business deal and decided to branch my office as your husband?”

“Which husband?” Maelie smirked. “Well, sorry it might come as a surprise….” She said matter-of-factly. “Nevan is the father of my baby and he’s the one I wish to marry.”

Still Caiden stood, his spirit galloped off his body. His jaw dropped so wide. He breathed, edged his brow and decided to ask again.

“Is this a prank or something?”

“Do I look like a joke to you?” Maelie smirked. All this while, Nevan said nothing, just eyeing Caiden like dirt, like someone waiting for him to get angry and he’d show him what he’s got.

Caiden walked back to his seat, dropping on it, head sunk low, still processing what his wife just said. He raised his head to look at her again, her face was stern. No iota of a joke for real.

He laughed nervously.

He and Maelie had been living together as an engaged couple for three years. He was the only gynaecologist from Howard Hospital who volunteered to undertake her impossible fertility crisis. Every other doctor rejected her, claiming her case was impossible to cure. As the daughter of the CEO, she promised that if Caiden cures her, she’d definitely marry him.

Now the treatment spanned three years, falling in the same year her dad had promised to return from abroad and hand over to her. It was a great dream for Caiden who fell in love with her deeply over the years and earnestly wanted to have a family with her.

“What about the marriage we planned this year?” Caiden asked.

“Which marriage?” Maelie acted as if she was hearing this for the first time. “Well, the marriage I’ve been planning is for Nevan, my man.” She draped her hands over his body.

“Not you. So sorry I lied to you. I’ll take responsibility for that.”

This whole scene felt like a staged drama to Caiden but something told him it wasn’t staged.

He gazed on the paper and then raised his head from it to Maelie. “I still can't believe this.” Shock swallowed his facial frames up.

“I’m sorry, Caiden, but I can’t marry you,” Maelie Logan stated in a cold tone. She hugged Nevan even tighter and said sweetly. “This is my man, Nevan Matthews, the son of Sir. Matthews. Exactly my spec. Not a medical genius who has nothing to show in his account.”

Caiden sat stiff. His heart beat heavily.

Maelie brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear before speaking. “Since we started dating, I’ll be honest with you,” she said calmly. Every movement she made highlighted her elegance and striking beauty. “....I've been unhappy, just that I never showed it, so as not to hurt you. We aren't at the same level. You're a mere doctor and I'm about to take over Howard, especially now I'm fertile.”

“Who made you fertile?” Caiden rose from his seat, balled fisted. Nevan stepped from Maelie’s back to the front in challenge.

Maelie flared up. “Listen I'll pay you millions for your service for our three years together. Just name your price.”

“Is this what our years together and all the love we shared worth? Money?” Caiden asked.

Maelie stormed forward leaning towards him, with dagger eyes. “Listen man, I’ve got a while to do and I’ve got to massage my new man still this morning, stop pissing me off right now!” Her hands banged on the desk in reflex. “Name your price and I’ll pay you!”

“Except you actually offered those services for free.”

This hurt Caiden even more. His chest was about to explode. “And you,” he advanced towards Nevan. “Haven’t you got any sense? You did this to a woman whom I’m already engaged to?”

“Listen man,” Nevan loomed with his big voice. “If you don’t just want me beating you up, respect yourself!” Maelie was even nodding in acceptance.

“What the hell?” Caiden lunged at him but Maelie slid in, blocking them.

“Fight here and I call the cops on you!”

Caiden stepped back, remembering the rules of the hospital. Anger had messed him up just now.

Upon checking the DNA of the baby again, it wasn’t him but Nevan, allegedly.

“We always had sex, why didn't you get pregnant for me?” He was confused. They had been living together and sharing the same bed for three years.

She burst into laughter. “I take pills each time we finish because I never wanted to get pregnant with a common man like you.” Sarcasm hinted in her voice.

“So you'd been using me all these while?”

But there was no sign of remorse on Maelie's face.

Without his effort, she won't have ever gotten fertile to the point of getting pregnant for another man. And even her inheritance would have passed her by but here she was talking as if he played no important role in her life.

Aside from being her genius doctor, he had assisted her massively with his knowledge when the hospital was about to go bankrupt under her leadership.

In many ways, he had personally contributed to Maelie’s life.

“I know this is difficult for you to accept,” Maelie stated again. “How about this? Think of it as me repaying you. After we call off the wedding, I’ll give you a settlement, cash, a villa, and a luxury car. That should be enough for you to live well even after you leave your doctor's job.”

“Planning to kick me out?” Caiden was speechless.

“To preserve our privacy. No one knew while we were together, we were planning to make it public after we got married but since we're no longer together, no one has to know. Ever. You remaining here is a huge risk.”

As she spoke, she took out a pen and a checkbook from her designer bag. Caiden silently watched her write down the amount: 2.5 million.

At that moment, she felt like a complete stranger to him.

“So this is what all those years mean to you? Just a number?” Caiden asked quietly.

A trace of emotion flickered across Maelie’s flawless face before fading back into indifference.

“If you think it’s too little, I can increase it. Just tell me how much you want.”

As the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, she was worth $180 million. Whatever he called which would likely be within $10 million would be nothing to her.,

Caiden looked at her, hurt evident in his eyes as he realized she had misunderstood his question.

“So you’ve already decided to end this marriage?”

Maelie pressed her lips together and turned her gaze toward the window. “What do you think when I'm already pregnant with Nevan?”

Caiden said with a bitter smile. “But I suppose it makes sense. You’re now set to become the CEO of Howard. A popular heiress, admired by countless people. And me? I’m just an ordinary doctor, not worthy to be called your husband.”

Maelie frowned slightly as she looked at him.

“Caiden, I admit you’ve done a lot for me, but this… isn’t what I want. Forget it. You won’t understand, no matter how much I explain. Take the money. Consider it payment for everything you’ve done over the years,” she said, sliding the check toward him.

Caiden didn’t even glance at it.

“A 2.5 million dollar breakup f*e? Very generous, Ms. Logan. But I don’t need it.”

Nevan tapped on Maelie, “Babe, you won’t know how this man irritates me. The more I look at him, the more I want to punch his eyes black. Let me leave before I commit murder.”

And so Nevan stormed out. With the way he walked, it was obvious he had some deep, obvious plan in mind. He wasn’t going to wait outside. Before Maelie could say a word, he was already gone.

Maelie turned back to Caiden. “Caiden,” he called his name commonly. “I suggest you take the money. Don’t let pride make you foolish. A small doctor like you could never earn this much in your lifetime.”

“Heyyy.” A woman adorned with jewelry and heavy makeup barked as she walked in. It was his prospective mother-in-law.

“Aunt Cara!” Caiden called, hoping to ask her what all this was about .

“Don’t call me that. We've got nothing to do with each other again,” Cara snapped. “If you’re leaving, take your belongings with you. We can't trust a commoner like you to keep things private.”

She took out a credit card from her purse and threw it at him. The brief warmth on Caiden’s face disappeared, replaced by a cold expression.

“You will need that when you're out of this place.”

Even if the engagement was over, there was no need to humiliate him.

“Aunt Cara, you're really doing this to me? I thought I had always treated you respectfully,” Caiden asked.

Cara laughed sharply, her tone cutting. “What did you expect, Caiden?”

“You should do better as an elder!” Caiden said.

But Cara continued without restraint. “Why should I? When you're trying to rub your common self over my daughter, a woman you can't get even in your dreams. Do you really think you can marry into our family? Not a chance! Oh, and there’s something else you should know, Caiden….”

Caiden edged his brow wondering what that is.

“If you don't leave in peace, we will have no choice than to strike a sexual assault case where you forced Maelie to get into an affair with you before your treat her.”

Caiden's breath failed. “What?”

Cara cocked her head sarcastically. “That's what it is. A doctor shouldn't be in a sexual relationship with his patient and Maelie here got all the evidence should you turn stubborn.”

He never believed that these people disliked him to this depth.

Cara clapped her hand in conclusion. “So… That's what it is. An alliance with the Logans is a rare opportunity. For me, it’s a chance to change the future of Howard Hospital.”

Hearing that, Caiden finally let go. There was no need fighting for a love that had already developed wings and flown away but he vowed in his heart to make them come back begging.

“I’ll so mercilessly reject them!” He vowed.

He smiled faintly. “I see. Then this insignificant commoner wishes you and the Logan's family success.”

Without looking back, he walked out. As Maelie watched him leave, a storm of emotions rose within her.

She had expected him to lose his temper or plead with her after hearing about Nevan. Instead, he remained calm throughout, even indifferent in the end.

“Mom, do you think our manner of revealing went too far?” she asked quietly.

Cara scoffed. “Too far? The real problem is that useless man thinking he could marry you, that's ridiculous!” she said with a smug smile.

“You've got nothing to worry about. You and Nevan will get married soon. Dad will return soon too and hand over to you. Everything is set.”

Mr. Logan being the CEO ruled at the moment over the branch of the hospital in London. Being a newly created one, it needed someone with more experience, so he gave the US branch to his daughter to man.

When his daughter is ready to get married or gets pregnant, he will fully hand over operations here to her.

Maelie had already told him. He was coming back. To Cara and Maelie, everything was perfectly planned out.

But Caiden wasn’t done with them yet.
