Chapter 08

The van stopped on a quiet street just before dawn.

Kael looked out the window. The house at the end of the road was only a black shell. Burned walls. No roof. Weeds growing through the cracked steps. He had not seen it since he was a boy.

Theo sat up, rubbing his eyes. “Where are we, Daddy?”

“A place I used to know,” Kael said. “Stay close to me.”

Seren checked the street. “No Circle cars yet. We move now.”

They left the van and walked through the broken gate. Ash still covered parts of the ground even after so many years. Kael led them to the back of the house where the kitchen used to be. He knelt and brushed away dirt and burned wood until he found a flat stone with a faint mark in the center.

Seren spoke quietly. “Only Elzeus blood can open it. Your father made sure of that.”

Kael took the two silver rings from his pocket and pressed them against the mark. Nothing happened. He looked at his own hand, then at Theo’s.

“Theo. Give me your hand.”

The boy placed his small hand over the stone. Kael cut his own finger with a piece of glass and let one drop of blood fall on the mark. Theo did not pull away when Kael did the same with a tiny cut on the boy’s finger.

The stone glowed once and sank into the ground. A dark opening appeared with metal stairs leading down.

Rook went first with a light. Seren followed. Kael carried Theo and came last. The stairs went deeper than he expected. The air grew cold and still.

At the bottom was a small room with stone walls. In the center stood a metal door with no handle. Strange marks covered it, the same kind that had been on the warehouse seal.

The system spoke.

[Main mission active.]

[Open your father’s hidden vault.]

[Reward: One sealed letter from your father + basic map of Circle safe houses.]

[Cost: One memory of your father’s voice saying your name will be erased.]

Kael stood in front of the door. He could still hear his father’s voice from childhood, low and steady. That sound was one of the last clear pieces he had left of the man.

He looked at Theo, then at the door.

“Take the cost.”

The memory left him. For a moment the room felt emptier. He knew his father had spoken his name many times, but he could no longer hear the sound of it.

New knowledge settled into his mind. The marks on the door made sense now. He pressed both rings into two small slots and spoke a short word in a language he did not know he remembered.

The metal door opened without a sound.

Inside was a narrow space. On a stone table lay a single envelope, a small black notebook, and a third silver ring that looked exactly like the two Kael already carried.

Kael froze.

Seren stepped closer. “That should not be here. There were only two.”

Kael picked up the envelope. His name was written on the front in his father’s handwriting. He opened it.

The letter was short.

“Kael. If you are reading this, I am gone and the Circle is still hunting us. The third ring is not a key. It is a lock. It was made to close the door forever if both keys were ever forced open. Use it only when you have no other choice. The notebook has names and places. Trust no one who smiles too easily. Protect the boy. He is the last true heir. — Father.”

Kael folded the letter and put it in his pocket. He picked up the third ring. It felt colder than the others.

The system flashed a sudden warning.

[Foreign system signature detected inside the vault.]

[Warning: Something woke when the door opened.]

A low sound came from the far wall. Stone shifted. A section of the wall slid open and a figure stepped out.

It was a man in old clothes, skin pale, eyes closed. When he opened them, they glowed with the same blue light as the Hollow hosts.

Rook raised his gun. Seren moved in front of Theo.

The man spoke with a voice that sounded like dry leaves.

“The blood has returned. The seal is weak. The Circle will come for the three rings now.”

Kael stepped forward, keeping Theo behind him. “Who are you?”

“I was the first guardian. Your father left me here to wait. I have waited too long. My system is failing. Soon I will become like the Hollow ones.”

The guardian’s body shook. Blue cracks appeared on his skin.

“Take the third ring and go. The Circle already knows this place is open. They will be here before the sun is fully up.”

Kael put the third ring with the other two. The notebook went into his jacket.

The guardian looked at Theo. For a second the blue light in his eyes softened.

“Protect the child. He carries more than blood.”

Then the guardian’s body broke apart into blue ash that faded into the air.

The vault was quiet again.

Seren spoke first. “We leave now. No more time.”

They climbed the stairs quickly. When they reached the surface, the sky was turning light gray. Two black cars were already turning onto the street.

Kael held Theo close and ran with the others toward the van. Gunshots cracked behind them. Bullets hit the burned walls.

Rook started the engine before the doors were fully closed. The van pulled away hard. One black car followed.

Kael looked at the three rings in his hand. Two keys and one lock. His father’s letter felt heavy in his pocket.

The system spoke one more time.

[Mission complete.]

[Letter and notebook acquired.]

[New warning: The Circle has activated a high-level Hollow host.]

[Identity: Unknown.]

[Arrival time: Less than three hours.]

Kael stared out the back window at the burned house growing smaller in the rain.

He had his father’s last words.

He also had three rings that the Circle wanted more than anything.

And something stronger than Dariac or Lila was already coming.
