The corridors of the barracks echoed with heavy boots and sharper whispers. Soldiers who once fought shoulder to shoulder now walked in divided clusters, their eyes darting toward Renna’s door as if the wood itself held betrayal.

Kael led the search personally, his cloak brushing against the cold stone floor. Behind him came Eldrin, Isolde, and two guards carrying lanterns. Renna followed under watch, her wrists bound but her head unbowed. Her eyes flashed with a defiance that was equal parts fury and despair.

“Search every corner,” Kael commanded, his voice leaving no room for doubt. “If the Warlord’s shadow has crept here, we will drag it into the light.”

The guards began tearing through the room. Chests were overturned, straw mattresses ripped apart, shelves stripped bare. Armor clattered as pieces were thrown aside, boots scattered, even floorboards pried up in case something was hidden beneath.
