Beneath the flaking silver scorched by blast heat a name was carved deep and neat on the back of that cursed badge. Vane Elric.

Axel held the disk up to the faint light filtering through the cinema’s broken ceiling. His hands shook so hard the metal gave a soft chime against his fingers. This name was the most precious shard of his lost childhood. The teacher who had taught him to balance a spear. The only father figure he had ever known. He saw again the large hand guiding his grip the first time he lifted a weapon. Heard the deep voice that taught him what honor and sacrifice truly meant. Felt the warm smile that always waited for him at the end of every training session even when he failed again and again.

"Vane Elric" he whispered his voice rough and thin. "This is his badge. The one that should have been buried with him five years ago."

"You knew him" Rena asked softly. She lay weak and worn but her gaze stayed sharp catching every flicker of feeling on his face.

"He was my master" Axel said firmly though his tone broke at the end. He ran a finger along the deep cut letters. "He taught me everything. How to fight how to survive how to tell who deserved protection and who had to be faced. The Order said he died a martyr. Slaughtered by shadow witches on a holy mission. I stood right by the grave. I watched his casket lowered into the earth."

Rena let out a sharp bitter laugh that echoed through the empty hall. "Died a martyr" She shook her head slowly and looked at him in a way that raised goosebumps on his arms. "He was murdered by the very men you call leaders. By the people you have revered all this time."

Axel spun around eyes burning red. His chest heaved and for a heartbeat he wanted to lunge at her to silence the words that cut so deep. "Do not dare twist the truth! You never knew Vane. You have no idea how true and honest he was"

"He found out the Order harvests demon hearts to make serum for their elite" Rena cut in calm and sharp as a blade. "Serum that extends life for centuries. That grants power far beyond human limits. They do not kill thousands of those creatures to protect people Axel. They kill to tear out their hearts. To pump that stolen essence into the veins of the Order’s highest ranks. And Vane learned every last secret."

Axel froze. Her words struck him blow after blow harder than any wound. He remembered how tired Vane had looked in his final months. How he vanished for days at a time with no word. How the fire in his eyes had dimmed to something hollow and unsure. Then came the announcement. Killed in battle against shadow witches. That was what he had believed. That was what he had taken as absolute truth.

"He refused to stay silent" Rena went on quieter still but no less fierce. "He threatened to lay all the proof before the public. So they injected him with that dark fluid. Turned him into a monster. Then executed him clean and proper. All wrapped in the flag of heroism so no one would question a thing. I saw it happen Axel. I saw Vane when he was still human. When he fought the poison eating him alive. And I saw him fall. Not to a demon. To the men who had stood beside him."

The whole world felt like it crumbled around him. Every doctrine he had lived by every line he had drawn every drop of blood spilled in their name turned to ash in an instant. A hollow burning ache opened in his chest a black pit swallowing everything he had ever held as right. He looked at the badge again and behind the name he saw his old teacher. The smile that never faded. The hand always ready to steady him. The eyes that had believed in him more than anyone else ever had.

"If what you say is true" he said barely above a breath "then I have been nothing but a weapon for murder all this time. Every demon I cut down every life I took. They might have been like Vane. People twisted into monsters so they could be hunted and killed without guilt."

He bowed his head and for the first time since he was small tears spilled hot down his face.

Rena watched him with an expression hard to name part pity part iron resolve. "From this day forward we share one enemy" she said steady and sure. "The Order. They treat us like pieces on a board. They bend truth to suit their ends. And they kill anyone who dares pull back the curtain."

Axel curled his fingers tight around the badge until his nails dug into his palm. Cold anger rose to replace the paralyzing grief. His choice was made. He cared nothing for the Order’s rules their oaths or the lies he had been fed. All that mattered now was truth. Justice for Vane. And for every soul consumed by this great deceit.

He lifted his head and wiped his face with the back of his hand. His eyes were clear now no trace of doubt left. "I stand with you. But I need everything you know. Every scrap of proof you carry. I will not let Vane’s death mean nothing."

Rena gave a small smile the first one that felt completely real. "I will tell you all of it. But first we have to get out of here alive."

Outside thunder roared and wind lashed the walls of the old cinema. Between them two lifelong enemies bound by blood and betrayal forged an alliance that would shake every foundation of the world they knew.

Then the dark screen behind them split open. Blinding blue lightning burst forth casting a giant shape across the whole room. Dust swirled into the air and the floorboards groaned as if the building itself shook in fear.

Grandmaster Henderson stood there or at least his glowing projection tall and sharp with a smile that made Axel’s skin crawl. His lined face looked more terrible than ever under the electric light eyes piercing like a hawk fixed on prey. He wore black robes stitched with silver the crest that had once filled Axel with pride now felt like a mark of chains.

"Well done Rena" his voice boomed from every corner heavy and suffocating. "You have delivered my finest experiment straight to the slaughterhouse. I had not expected you to be so efficient."

Axel stepped back and wrapped both hands around his spear. He narrowed his eyes confused and furious. "Henderson! What do you mean? What do you mean by experiment"

Henderson laughed low and cold like stones grinding together. "Axel Axel Axel. Did you truly think you were just some naturally gifted hunter? That all that grueling training all that suffering all that loss happened by chance" He paused and his smile stretched wider. "You are my creation Axel. From the very first day you stepped inside these walls I mapped every step of your path. I chose you. I shaped you. And I alone have the right to end this."

Axel’s blood turned to fire. "What have you done to me"

"Welcome to the end of your first assignment" Henderson sneered. "You thought you could simply walk away? You thought you could break free of what made you? No my boy. You are a puppet strung exactly where I pull. And now it is time to put the doll back in its box."

The whole cinema heaved. Dust and chunks of plaster rained down. Old seats scraped and tipped. From the dark ceiling dozens of iron spikes shot down slamming into the wood with thunderous cracks. They locked into place in a perfect circle trapping Axel and Rena inside a cage of pulsing blood red light. The energy pressed down heavy on every muscle until Axel’s knees buckled.

Rena moaned soft and broken. Her already frail frame slumped further under the weight. "He planned this all along" she breathed almost too faint to hear. "He let you escape. Let you chase me. This was never anything but a trap."

Axel grabbed at the glowing bars searing his palms but refused to let go. He stared straight into Henderson’s cold smiling face.

"You will not win" he hissed gathering every last spark of strength he had. "I will break this cage. And I will stop you."

Henderson laughed again the sound bouncing off every wall. "Try if you must Axel. But remember this. I built you. I know every weakness you carry even the ones you do not see yourself."

The red blaze burned brighter and Axel felt his own power being siphoned away. Beside him Rena’s breathing slowed to barely a whisper and her body slipped toward the floor.

"Target: Rank A Hunter Axel. Status: Fully infected and traitorous. Execute on sight."That flat cold voice blared from the smartphone of a passing pedestrian as if the whole world had just passed sentence on him. Axel and Rena ducked low at once slipping into the deep shadow beneath a rusted bus stop. Fine rain soaked their shoulders mixing with exhaust fumes and wet asphalt but nothing stung sharper than those words ringing in his ears."Fully infected?" Axel hissed his gaze snapping to the giant billboard across the road. His own face stared back stamped in glaring red letters: TERRORIST. The photo had been taken at his induction ceremony back when he still believed every promise the Order made back when he truly thought he was protecting people. "They do not even bother hiding how shameless their lies are.""That is how they destroy you Axel" Rena said quietly her voice shaking with bone deep pain. The world did not explode in sheets of red fire. It sank instead into black liquid cold and silent as the deepest ocean floor. Axel could see nothing but darkness that moved like water wrapping around every inch of him pressing against his ears with a stillness that felt like it could swallow him whole. For a moment he thought this must be death. This was what it felt like when the soul slipped loose from the flesh when all motion stopped and only endless emptiness remained.A heartbeat before the rocket struck Rena closed her hand around Axel’s fingers still trembling violently from the electric shock. Dark energy seeped from her skin and pulled both of them straight through solid concrete as if it were no thicker than mist.
